Hello all. It seems like I have less to write about every time I come on here. Since last Saturday it's been a similar routine, I summed up most of my teaching in the last e-mail. I'm getting to know Rose and Kim a little better. I get with both of them well. Rose can be a little bit mad in a good way, Kim seems a bit more laid back but she's also quite fun. I went to a teacher's wedding reception earlier, or should I say I had a free lunch, siad hi to one of the teachers and then left. That's the way it goes for people around here I think. MOre distant friends come for a meal that lasts about half an hour, get to say hi then leave. It allows more ... read more

Hey everyone. To be honest not much has happened since Tuesday. Rose and Kim have returned to Kanji and they seem very fun and easy to get on with. They have created a very good card game which is very Mathematical and probability based, so I like it. I'm starting to get a little more preparation into lessons, so hopefully that'll keep going the same. Apart from that I'm almost getting into a cycle, and we're starting to help with homework more in the evenings. We hope to be back early enough to play some cricket this afternoon and we're going to a teacher's wedding reception on Tuesday which should be interesting, and that's all the news really. The funniest thing to happen since I last spoke to you was in mine + Colin's 4B spoken ... read more

Hey all, I hope you're all well. I'm probably the illest I've felt since arriving here at the moment, but it's not as bad as it was earlier. It's because yesterday we were out of bottled water, and as Maria had said you can trust the tap water in the country side I took my chances. I won't be doing that again. If I'd been in Chennai, Bangalore or even Tiru I wouldn't of considered it, and now I'm wishing that I'd allowed myself to go thirsty. After being sick a few times in the night it's a bit better now though, but all I've had to eat today is a biscuit and a banana, but I've got a few more bananas and I can stomach them at the moment. I just don't want to eat ... read more

I've got so much to say, I don't know where to start. On Sunday Me + Colin met up with Claire and Catherine from a nearby placement and we all went to Pondicherry together. On the way we had lunch at our placement principal's house as he invited us and we want to get on his good side. We had the tedious meeting of his family etc. and had a decent lunch, but I'm becoming very surprised by the Indian's attitude to alchohol. Every guide you read says it is frowned upon, but a week or so back Colin borker his 6 month no drinking resolution under Maria's insistence, and the principal and his family clearly had the intention of getting us under the table, as between 4 of us there were 4 600ml bottles of ... read more

I can't believe how much happens in just a few days here. Anyway, I thought I'd update you as to how we're generally living at our placements. We're very well looked afetr here. Our room is huge and we both have comfortable beds. It can get a little hot in the day, but the fans generally col us down at night. The only drawback is that our shower is freezing, and even in India I wouldn't call that refreshing. I've finished Starter for Ten, but I've got less time on my hands than I did have at the moment. Most of the time is spent at the school, and we normally eat with Maria and the other volunteers in her house, and there is a nice flat upstairs where we stay during the day. We get ... read more

Hello all. I feel really welcome and reassured at my placement. As yet I haven't been made to teach, I'm just observing. And they tell me that they won't push me into anything if I'm not confident. I think I am up to teaching, but if I fell I'd be better at assisting classes or working in small groups with the slower kids then I can do that instead. There are so many volunteers about it's quite flexible. There's me + Colin, Gemma who's into her 30s and is helping mainly with admin but is teaching aswell. Then within the next couple of weeks Rose and Kim return, they were the previous GAP volunteers and Maria asked them to stay on a bit longer. Rose clearly left an impression, I've never known someone so well without ... read more

Hey all A lot has changed since my last entry, and the last few days have certainly been more of a shock than the days in Chennai were. From being with all the other South India GAPers, having a tour guide and very good accomodation, me & Colin are now at our placement, and it's hard to describe everything. From being with everybody and having a really fun time, we're now here to work. We both miss being in a large group, we all had so much fun together in Chennai, but now it's time to move on from Nicole and Colin's practical jokes and the treasure hunts set up by Nicole and Eileen, which is a bit of a shame. The 2 girls in Kerala left on Thursday evening, and the rest of us left ... read more

Hello all! I hope it's all going well for you in the U.K. I've had a great first 2 days in Chennai, it feels like I've been here for weeks. Our flight got in at about half one in the morning on the 2nd, and I ended up getting to bed at some unearthly time like half 4, but I didn't get up until about 11 the next morning, so it wasn't too bad and after a good nights sleep last night there aren't any problems. We've all been staying the YWCA, I think it's linked to the YMCA. I'm geting on well with all the GAP students, ,and it's good to get to know each other before we all head off for seperate placements. I'm heading to mine on Friday, and a 4 hour bus ... read more
