South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires January 19th 2013

Geo: -34.6118, -58.4173An easy short flight from Posadas dropped us in a busy Buenos Aires airport where we negotiated a bus to the end of a metro line, but then discovered the metro has no escalators and is crowded and sweaty, built in 1910 and the line we want closed for rennovation. So resorted to taxi to take us to our small boutique hotel on a quiet street, where we seem to be almost the only guests. It is built on the same corridor or sausage lay out they call it as other old houses in the city, some now hotels. resturants or boutiques or galleries, with attempts to restore them to former splendour. The series of 3 receptionists rotating all day and night all speak very good English and help us organise where to go ... read more

Geo: -27.1392, -55.7252The bus ride proved remarkably unevenful. The bus didn't start at Igazu but arrived from somewhere else to go on to Posadas so our seats had already been in use and were a bit messy with crumbs etc but the were comfotable enough for a 5 hour ride. The bus stopped in various little towns along the way, each of which had its own mini bus station. And lunch was provided - unappetising cheese/ham/salami sandwiches, a piece of cake and fizzy orange squash! Our fellow travellers were young back packers, the French couple we'd met going to the falls, a scruffy young English couple travelling non stop to Bolivia and then up to Costa Rica to teach on spec and lots of locals getting on and off, families and individuals. The bus station in Posadas ... read more

South America » Argentina January 14th 2013

Geo: -25.57, -54.57Our second day of hot, steamy sunshine - getting used to hugging the shade and avoiding the sun we so crave in England. Our friendly, saviour taxi driver turned up, by secial request, at the hotel at 9.30 am to drive us across the Argentinian border - we were so pleased not to be lugging bags on and off local buses- and on to find our hotel in Puerta Iguasu to drop our bags, then on the the waterfalls entrance ( some 20 k away). This all worked like clock work and he was helpful in checking we had Argentinian pesos and knowing where to catch the public bus back from the falls. The entrance to the Argentinian falls is beautifully landscaped with shady paths and flowering shrubs. We set out on the lower board walk ... read more

South America » Brazil January 13th 2013

Geo: -25.5469, -54.5882Well you remember that taxi that was going to be there at 1:25 in the morning to pick us up at the airport...........well, no sign of that! So we hired our own taxi and he got us to the B&B (Marica's if you want to know so you can avoid it) but the place was in darkness and no amount of ringing the bell by the taxi driver was going to rouse anyone! So he earnt a big tip by taking us to another hotel which was OK except for the air conditioning that produced more noise than cold!No matter, off the next morning on the local bus to the Iguazu Falls Park (Brazil). This was our first day of sun and heat. Quite a chane from torrential rain in Sau Paulo. The park ... read more

South America » Brazil January 12th 2013

Geo: -23.5489, -46.6388Well we may not have slept as much as those flat beds and the attentive service demanded, but it was still all rather lovely. Just a shame one can't always travel that way.The first surprise is that Sao Paulo is actually much more manageable than all the commentators and guides suggested, despite the 26 million people (or whatever the number is). We took a local airport bus (just over £1 each) to the nearest Metro stop then travelled the Metro, through the rush hour, to within 300 metres of our hotel. It was, if anything, less crowded than the London Underground, there were always escalators to street level, and young people obligingly leapt up to offer their seats to us old codgers! The hotel kindly checked us in vey early (but no extra breakfast!) so ... read more

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236Bags almost packed and in 6 hours we are off to Heathrow, then it's: Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Peru again...and Brazil again. And side trips to Paraguay and Uruguay. Our friends Helen & Steve are joining us for the last two weeks in Brazil. And we fly back into Heathrow on March 20.Bags have been weighed and are amazingly light! What has been forgotten? One thing that surprised me already - Sao Paulo is only 2 hours time difference from London, Buenos Aires only 3, even Chile only 5 - the same as Eastern USA. Shows what an odd mental picture of the globe I have!We will keep the blog going as best we can given the vagaries of wi-fi and the like. If you decide you had enough - tell us and we ... read more

North America » United States » Florida November 13th 2012

Geo: 24.587, -81.6952The Florida Keys stretch out like a string of pearls about 100 miles long from the Florida coast. They were first connected by a railway but that failed in the early 20th century, due to the damage caused by 3 hurricanes, and now it is US Route 1 (that starts at the Canadian border) that reaches the end across bridges and causeways. We have 2 nights at Tavernier, about one third of the way along, then one night at the very end, Key West, before driving back to the airport and our flight home getting to London Friday morning. The Island Bay resort on Tavernier is a little piece of paradise. 9 bungalows in a line, ours being the last one at the end right on the beach, with the best view. A little private beach, ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Miami Beach November 10th 2012

Geo: 25.7928, -80.1349Our last internal flight, our last rental car - a shiny blue Hyundai - our last going the wrong way out of the airport! Our hotel is as close to the beach as you can get, right in the middle of the Art Deco area with scores of small hotels built in the art-deco style after the depression of the 1930s to attract tourists. They served to house Jewish refugees, Cuban immigrants, troops during WWII and fell out of favour but have now mostly been restored and put back to use as hotels. (All that from a video at the Art-DEco area visitor centre). Miami Beach is tourist town par excellence, cars and motor-bikes cruise up and down, the side with the hotels is lined with bars and restaurants and clubs many of them pumping ... read more
