Geo: -45.0311, 168.663We dragged ourselves away from the spectacular mountain views of the Mount Cook range to drive to Queenstown and picked up a German girl hitch hiker to entertain us and give us the back packer experience. We dropped her 4 hrs later on a hot afternoon at the Lake shore at Wanaka, where she was hoping to pick up some paid work and finally found our hotel well out of town. We were pleased not to linger in town with all its tourists and Extreme sports Combo excitements. We spent evenings hanging out in our quirky old hotel in a magnificent upgraded suite with views way down below of a beautiful peaceful river entertering a canyon, only broken periodically by the red jet boating engines and screams of adrenalin rush from excited customers zooming ... read more

Geo: -43.4643, 170.018The only reason people go to Fox Glacier is the overpowerig presence of Mount Cook, Mount Tasman, Fox Glacier, Franz Josef Glacier and all the accompanying stuff of mountains and snow. And the best way to see all this is by helicopter - given their ability to fly high and slow and land on the snowfields high in the mountains. So we squeezed into this little helicoper together who two other passengers and the pilot and up we went. The photos speak for themselves really. Mountain peaks clad in snow, glaciers, mountain huts high on the peaks, getting out onto the snow. All brilliant stuff - you can tell from Peter's smile he thought this was much the best way to get up a ountain, not all that walking stuff. On our return we found our rather ... read more

Geo: -42.9061, 171.549This was an overnight brief visit, after climbing up with lots of zig zags to the treeless pass and down in the morning. There is barely a settlement these days at the top, just 30 permanent residence, two of whom we stayed with. This was an a-typical overnight stop for us, a B and B, re-named now as Home stay. We barely recognised the tiny house on School Lane from its published photo since Geoff was repainting it in lurid colours. He invited us to his home, which was small and chaotic, so we had to feel immediately at home. The iron bedstead had nice white sheets and white fluffy towels were provided but the down side was having to walk through the living room and attached kitchen to get to the shared bathroom, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Kaikoura February 7th 2014

Geo: -42.4023, 173.681Our journey to Kaikoura for the whale-watch 'experience' was somewhat extended by the necessity to return to the hotel at Te Mahia to collect a nighdress that someone had forgotten to pack - so that was an extra hour of tight twisty roads. When we arrived we discovered Kaikoura is a town is entirely devoted to getting tourists to see whales - by boat, by plane, by helicopter. There were also seals and albatrosses to be 'experienced'. So masses of motels and cafes catering to these passing tourists. Our motel had a large contingent of chinese tourists who spent much of their time yelling across the courtyard to each other.Next morning we assembled at the Whale Watch centre for our informative video and safety briefing and then were bussed 10 minutes to the boats - ... read more

Geo: -41.006, 173.01We arrived at the last motel just before the park entrance at lunch time - a great location, and good views from the terrace of the garden and fields. We walked into the park in the afternoon for several hours and found a great beach where I had a wonderful invigorating swim on a hot afternoon and saved up our expensive water taxi ride for the next full day on the abel tasman trail. This was a great day - sunny and windy again and off on another adventure. At 9.00am we booked in to the water taxi office just next door and climbed onto the speed boats while still in the car park for the 10 min ride down to the beach. The tide was out a long way so tractors towed the ... read more

Geo: -41.2159, 173.969Early Monday morning we were on the car ferry across the Cook Strait to Picton. There was only a short passage across the open sea because the first hour was acoss Wellington Harbour and the last hour up through the Malborough straits betwetractiven islands. This was a very scenic trip pasing rolling hills, deep blue inlets with small boats and leisure craft going in all directions. From Picton we drove for an hour along a windy single track road to a perfect location Te Mahia - on the water bathed in perfect sun for the next 2 days. Here we chilled, sat, swam in cool water, tramped a bit along paths and explored other bays, drank wine, eat picnics, pizza and home cooked mussels and watched the passage of the sun as the day developed, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington Region » Wellington February 1st 2014

Geo: -41.2865, 174.776Wellington looked like another attractive small city where work could be exciting and play interesting, helped by more sunny days with perfect blue skies, although the wind was chilly for a couple of days. Our first exploration was on the tram that took us up to the botanical gardens and a view of the city, reminding us of a the peak tram in Hong Kong, though much less busy. Muscle strain in my legs from the Tongariro crossing 2 days before continued to make walking up and down slopes and stairs agony. Its so much easier to be young! kess and Jess identified a funky fish resturant for our last meal together and then they went off to find designer beers and check out the night life ( although still only 8.30pm}while we found ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » East Coast » Napier January 31st 2014

Geo: -39.4917, 176.916In February 1931 Napier was flattened by a huge earthquake that went on for over 2 minutes, a loing time for an earthquake it seems. Buildings not destroyed by that stood a good chance of being consumed by the fire that followed, firemen got the engines out of the damaged fire station but the water pipes had been fractured. The rebuilding process was highly organised and the decision only to allow reinforced concrete suited the in-mode buiklding style of the day, Art DEco. So trhe who town is a riot of Art DEco style, with some Spanish Mission, and the preservation society does a great job helping to ensure it stays looking right and organising tours and a huge Art Deco weekend once a year on the anniversary of the quake. We stayed in one of ... read more

Geo: -39.2901, 175.562We have been so lucky with the weather so far. Except for one day we have had blue skies and hot sun every day. And our stay at the South of Lake Taupo was no exception and the best place so far. The Lake House bed and breakfast was wonderfully comfortable with fantastic views from the terrace of the garden and the Lake in the distance. Our hosts Neil and Raywin were very hospitable with lots of drinks and an evening meal the first night and lots of stories and information about NZ and this area and their life story of course. We also had a coupe of swims in the very refreshing, ie bloody cold, lake below, and were amazed that there was hardly anybody else around - this being the end of ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua January 28th 2014

Geo: -38.1398, 176.247Rotorua seems to exist almost exclusively to provide food and accommodation for the tourists who come to see the geothermal areas - and it does it in a pretty unattractive way. The road on which our motel was located was lined its full length both sides with bed and breakfasts, motels and hotels. Fortunately TripAdvisor had pointed us at a good one and the helpful staff told us of a spa about twenty minutes away where we could partake of the waters, fed by a hot spring that pours out hundreds of litres of boiling water a minute which is then cooled to temperatures of 35-40 degrees by waterfalls and holding ponds and flows into swimming pool and lounging pools. All very pleasant, and the sight of the clouds of steam drifting into the ... read more
