May 5-8, 2011 At Patty and Jerry Cooksey’s home in Beaver Creek, Oregon Visited with Evelyn as she is flat on her back after having broken her hip. She has to get stronger before hip replacement surgery can be performed. Had Rosie II serviced and washed of bugs and dirt, got hair cuts, did some shopping. Caught up on blog entry. It was a nice interim break between the Oregon Trail and our trip to Alaska. Everyone came over for Mother’s Day and we enjoyed visiting with adults who were children the last time we saw them in 1999. Here is a picture of some of the clan: Left to Right: Steven (David’s son), Travis (Patty and Jerry’s son) Michael (David’s son), Nancy Orick (Evelyn’s daughter), Scott Orick (Nancy's husband), Holly (Nancy and Scott’s daughter), Evelyn ... read more

May 10, 2011 Lincoln Rock State Park 9:30 57 degrees, clear and not windy 6453 starting mileage. Deep snow completely covers all the Cascade Mountains. Still going through orchards of apple, cherries and pears on whatever flat space they can get to. After miles and miles, turned away from the Columbia River and went up the Okanogan River Valley and picked up the Cariboo trail. Gold was discovered in 1858 in this valley and US cattlemen thought they could make a fortune selling cattle to the miners so, they used this trail to drive cattle up into this region. When gold gave out, and the railroad was being built, in the late 1800’s, cattlemen used this route again to drive cattle up to sell the beef to the railroad workers. I guess Hollywood wasn’t aware of ... read more

May 8th Mother’s Day Afternoon Left around 4:30 after visiting with the Egbert Clan. Mileage 6117 temp 50 degrees. They had all come over to visit with Evelyn for Mother’s Day. Left there in the rain at about 4:30. Now it was pouring rain and traffic was heavy as we headed back up the Columbia River Gorge. We had planned on stopping to see the falls along the way as there are a good number of them, but decided that we didn’t want to get out to see them up close and take a shower at the same time.. We were surprised that we could see them all from the road and so we did. Drove further up the gorge and out of the rain as we crossed into the leeward side of the mountains. Crossed ... read more

May 4th, 2011 Wildhorse RV Park, Umatillo Indian Reservation—a few miles outside of Pendleton, Oregon. Clear and cold 59 degrees. 9:30 am. 5785 mileage Went into town of Pendleton and saw where they hold the Pendleton Round-up every year. Really nice bronze bucking horse in front. Stopped at Safeway for gas as they were the cheapest we saw and learned that by state law you cannot pump your own gas. Paid $3.899 per gal. mileage 5794. As we left town and went to get on the freeway, there was an extremely well done life size diorama of two cowboys herding a small herd of Herefords. About 50 miles north-west of Pendleton, came to the Columbia River and was surprised at how desolate the area was with that much water right there. No trees except those that ... read more

May 3, 2011 Three Island Crossing, Glenn’s Ferry Cloudy—rained last night 50 degrees Started day at 10:00 with mileage at 5489. Three Island Crossing was where the emigrants crossed the Snake river by going from bank to island to island to island to bank. Every year in September the town holds a re-enactment of the event. Took picture of Glenn’s Ferry. Several murals on various walls. Chairs made of branches and city banners make it look festive. We were startled by a few buildings that were labeled, “Academy of Equine Dentistry.” Gassed up at town of Mountain Home off interstate 84. $3.699 per gal and took 20 gals. 5521 mileage. Drove on interstate 84 toward Boise, ID. Sagebrush land—no trees some cattle on hills. Lunch at Welcome Center as crossed into Oregon. Pretty tulips blooming and ... read more

Monday, May 2, 2011 50 degrees, mileage 5289 Clear and sunny. Left at 11:00 after doing e-mail and blog this morning. Drove to American Falls where prior to the building of a dam, it was a series of cataracts of the Snake River that dropped 50 feet. We watched a large flock of white pelicans near the spillway. All have a large squarish knob on bills that we read in our bird book was grown during breeding season. Wandered through residential area getting back to interstate and the yards were full of blooming forsythia, tulips and daffodils. Continued down freeway to Register Rock State Historic Site and had lunch. This was an emigrant campground and again travelers inscribed their names on the basalt boulders. One spot included two pictures drawn by a 7 year old boy ... read more

Sunday, May 1, 2011 Holiday Inn, Lander, WY Clear—thank goodness. 4967 mileage start. Had breakfast at the hotel and worked until 11:30 on blog, e-mails, and such. Extremely steep climb out of Lander into a gorgeous red canyon. Had to drop Rosie II into a lower gear. Area reminded us of Bryce and Zion canyons in Utah. Snow on ground and on the Wind River Mountains. Watched a herd of about 100 elk on a grassy hill through our binoculars. Spotted a golden marmot the size of a cat which thankfully decided not to argue with Rosie for the right away. Came up and over South Pass at 7,550+. This is the continental divide where all water on the western side flows to the Pacific Ocean. This low pass, which was about 20 miles wide was ... read more

Sunday April 30, 2011 Guernsey State Park, Wyoming Sunny, low clouds, 33 degrees choppy lake, blustery winds rocked our world in Rosie II in the night and early morning. Snowed during the night. Decided not to go through Fort Laramie as too cold and windy. Pretty country--sandy soil—pine studded low hills. Looked/drove around the town of Guernsey before continuing on highway 26 toward Casper. Valerie hiked to some rutted trails looking like Nanook of the North in her father’s old parka. The ruts were carved in the soft stone as they braked their wagons down the cliffs. I stayed in Rosie, as too cold for me and could hardly open door Nearby there was Register Cliff where emigrants wrote their names in soft limestone. One carving was a fur trapper as early as 1797. April 29, 2011 Friday North Platte, NE. Weather clear, 56 degrees and very windy. Mileage 4379; got gas at $3.789 per gal. Buffalo Bill Cody had a ranch in this town, which was a surprise to us. We expected Montana or Wyoming, but not Nebraska! One of the biggest freight yards for the Union Pacific Railroad is located here. Drove interstate 80 to Brule (not to be confused with Buhl, which we go through later), and then on Highway 30 (which seems to be THE old Oregon Trail road) to a dirt road to see the California Hill ruts. This was the typical directions that we were following. “Drive west through Brule on US 30 for about 4 miles. Watch for a granite 1912 Neb.
