Thursday, September 9--Goritsky We were in Goritsy right after lunch. The homes in the smallish village of Goritsy were very interesting with cut out, lacey fretwork above and around the windows and along the eaves. Houses were brightly painted and villagers allowed tours of their homes. The couple whose home we looked in/and through were painfully proud of their home. They had three kinds of heat in the house—radiators, gas heat and wood stove. He had built the home himself and was the local carpenter. She was the town’s vet. The older homes we saw as we walked along had all the same decorations but none of the new paint. Many of the homes had lovely flower gardens—the dahlias were especially nice. Veggie gardens were also abundant. This couple also kept a goat and some sheep ... read more

Wednesday, September 8th--Kizhi Island During the night the ship chugged up the length of Lake Onega and docked at “O dark 100” in the morning. We were to start the tour at 8, so we were up at “O dark 100” to have breakfast finished and turn in our room key and be ready to go with Polina. Every place we stopped had local tour guides that were familiar with that town or area. We found the guides very informative in general. Some had some quirky personality things, but in general all went well. On this island was a very old village with a huge wooden church with 22 domes built in 1714, a smaller church, and down the hill a bit was another old, old, church again all wooden. Also had a bell tower that ... read more

Tuesday, September 7th—Cruising Lake Lagoda and Verchnie Mandrogi We started our day with a buffet breakfast as we have had every day. Valerie and I both had eggs Benedict. I thought it was quite good except for some egg shells. Each day they have had a different hot cereal. This morning it was buckwheat, which I didn’t try as I don’t care for the sour taste. Yesterday, however, I did tried some millet cereal. It was ok–sort of looked like grits, but not as smooth in texture. After breakfast we went back to sleep as we were just crossing an uninspiring lake and we were really tired after the two days prior going full out. At about 11:30 we docked with the other boats at the reconstructed village of Verchnie Mandrogi. It had been a real ... read more

Monday, September 6th--Saint Petersburg, Russia From the meeting with Polina we learned that there was a free shuttle bus that operated every half hour from the ship to the subway. She had given us the prices for the optional tours to be available on Monday and we thought they were very expensive. We had also had it with being herded around the previous day with 10 minutes stops not giving you enough time to see things. Anyway, we felt we could maneuver on our own for the day. We wanted to go out to Peterhof and view the gardens and fountains of Peter the Great with plenty of time to walk around and stop when and where we wanted to. The palace itself was closed on Mondays, so we only got to tour/walk the extensive gardens. ... read more

Sunday, September 5th--Saint Petersburg, Russia After breakfast aboard the ship, all of Polina’s charges boarded a tour bus at the dockside. The bus drove through the city and the local guide pointed out the various buildings, churches, historical places, etc. and told the history of the city. She kept saying to look at the yellow facade on the right or around the next corner--the buildings were mostly painted yellow or cream or some similar light color. Apparently, since the days are short, someone--Peter the Great or Catherine, decreed all buildings in St. Petersberg were to be painted a bright yellow. The day was warm and clear even though they predicted rain--in fact rain was predicted almost every day, but it was short-sleeve-warm and mostly sunny the whole time. Every so often on the tour, we would ... read more

Saturday, September 4, 2010 We caught the train the next morning at 7am. It was a Finnish train so all was clean and modern/up-to-date. We quickly left the city and went into forests of birch and pine of some sort and other evergreen trees. We didn't see as much farm land as we expected instead a lot of lumber cutting operations. (This is true of the cruise from St. Pete to Moscow also. The birch were cut into logs that were about 6 feet long and then loaded on trains, trucks and we saw them on barges on the same river system we traveled on the cruise.) The trip by train was about 5 hours long. More time than was necessary was taken by passport control---a stop on the Finnish side and ... read more

Wednesday, September 1, 2010 What a difference a day makes! Went from a capital city (Reykjavik, Iceland) that is smaller in public buildings than most small towns in US that are county seats to a CITY with narrow trams, HUGE railroad station like in Vienna and Frankfurt, buildings more than 5 stories etc., and many people rushing everywhere. Iceland with a total population of 300 thousand for whole country and its mostly pastoral setting was left far behind. (To see the blog for Iceland, the first part of our trip, go to: http://www.travelblog.org/Europe/Iceland/blog-590551.html Walking from the train station to the hotel (Scandic Marski)---local bus from airport dropped us off there---we cam... read more

Monday, August 30-Wednesday, September 1--Iceland This is the first day of a 10-week trip to Iceland, Finland, Russia, and Lithuania, where Valerie will teach International Business and Macroeconomics. We decided to fly from Atlanta through Boston so we could break up the long transatlantic flight. Arrived in Reykjavik at 6:30 in the morning on Monday from Boston and took a bus to a downtown bus station where we caught a hotel shuttle bus. We were really surprised at the amount of tin architecture, the volcanic-looking landscape, and the distance to town from the airport. As soon as possible we checked in and went to sleep. Got up about 2:30pm and did a walking tour of Reykjavik as the hotel is right in the middle of the old town with a tourist information center right next door. ... read more
