Today was far from boring! For some reason I tossed and turned all night and finally threw in the towel about 4am; had a quick corn flake breakfast and hit the road. I have good front and rear blinkers, so there was no danger of not being seen. Besides, I was the only one on the road, It was actually quite fun, peddling along in the dark. I rode right by a grazing deer, and only at the last minute did he see me and sprint off into the woods. I did get chased by two dogs who were defending their homes. Nobody is supposed to be out there that early! The sunrise was beautiful and I also got to watch a tremendous light show since I was riding right into a line of thunderstorms. Finally, ... read more

North America » United States » Kansas » Chanute June 23rd 2018

The topography here has changed dramatically. Kansas is wide open. So far it is nothing but huge farms and very gently rolling hills. I climbed only 1050 feet in 59 miles today. I can already tell Kansas is going to be all about the winds. The prevailing winds are southerly. Today, after a quick goodby to Bruce, I was out the door early and arrived at Chanute at 11:30, just before the winds really started blowing. I think there are going to be a lot of early days because the forcast seems to be mostly from the southwest in the afternoon. 12-15 knots of big crosswinds makes it a tough grind. The riders traveling east talk about the winds also. It really doesn’t seem either direction is any better. On another subject: Several have asked what ... read more

Today was the earliest departure yet,(0630) in an attempt to beat the headwinds! For the most part we were successful. We made it about 40 of the 50 miles before the wind really kicked up! The last city in Missouri, Golden City has a famous Diner among the cycling crowd called Cooky’s Diner. They made us a great breakfast and we signed their book to verify our visit. While we were there, two of the Trans America racers entered for a quick meal. Marc McConnel and Lech Kiedrowski, Mark was especially pleasant and gave me some great, “gotta visit”, tips. ( Although he is racing, he had time to enjoy some great adventures along the way.) The first of them occurs in Wyoming at Saratoga, so I have something to look forward to. After my blog yesterday, we had a great opportunity to see downtown Springfield thanks the to great concierge at the University Plaza Hotel. Randy drove us by the hot spots in historic downtown including the place where Buffalo Bill shot a man over a gambling altercation. We sampled a couple of good night spots, and had dinner at Black Sheep Burgers. Our walk back to the Hotel was very peaceful and safe as Randy assured us. Downtown Springfield is really a hopping place and I’m glad we saw it! After a few mile detour to see the Bicycle Fence we intended to see yesterday, we set off on our ride. After about ten miles, we arrived at the Frisco Bike Path and rode it for the next16 miles. It started out as perfect pavement and the ... read more

Today we decided to ride Route 66,( the first paved transcontinental road in America) to Springfield. We had a list of tourist items that we were going to visit in Springfield. It turned out 66 was a noisy busy road along the 46 Freeway and not much fun at all. After about 20 miles on 66 we decided to get onto a quieter road for the rest of our ride. That was a better option because once again we were on a quieter more scenic road. We stopped along a horse ranch and several horses decided to come over and say hi. Our guess was that they were looking for food. After a few minutes we shoved off and soon bumped into a fellow rider named Joe, who was born in America but has been living ... read more

North America » United States » Missouri » Marshfield June 19th 2018

Today was a lovely day for a ride. It was still hot out there, but the humidity was lower and thus the ride was much more enjoyable. Once again we were on fairly quiet roads with constant ups and downs. However, the hills were not nearly as steep as in the heart of the Ozarks. We were able to complete 66 miles in a little over 5 hours. About 1/2 way, in Hartville, we found a very nice family diner, (LJD’s Family Cafe) and split a Breaded Pork Loin. Although it was fried, we both loved it along with the fries. The great waitress at LJD’s filled both of our water bottles with ice water and wished us safe travels as we headed back out to ride another 28 miles to Marshfield. We were prewarned there ... read more

When we encounter people along the way, it is always fascinating talking to them. Often the first two questions are: “Where are you going? “ “Where did you come from?” Then they say, “ Are you two brothers?” And the final question, “Why is he carrying all the stuff?” After those four questions we, usually hear their opinion of what we are doing. Yesterday an older gentleman offered: “There are only two people who would ride bikes in the heat, children or fools and you ain’t children!” Can’t say he was wrong! Non-cyclists are also very unreliable when we ask directions. For example, after we park the bikes for the day we usually walk to what we need. We might ask, “How far is the Millers Landing Restaurant?” If they say, ‘just a few blocks away’, ... read more

Today we find ourselves in Eminence, Missouri which is in the heart of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. We took advantage of it and had a wonderful time drifting on the Jack’s Fork of the Current River. We rented a couple of tubes, packed some sandwiches and put some beer and water in the cooler. Then Windy’s River Float Company took us several miles up the river to begin our float. Despite being warned of the strong current on entry, within 5 seconds of putting our tubes in the water, we hit a strong current ran into an overhanging tree, flipped the rafts and went for a swim. We scrambled to get the upside down cooler, grabbed the runaway drinks, retrieved the soaked sandwiches and finally flipped our tubes back over. I guess my waterproof phone ... read more

Today was a short day in mileage, but the hills and heat made it a tremendous challenge. I have not seen this kind of up and down since Eastern Kentucky, and the “Real Temp” factor of 105 made it a very challenging day. The lumpy roads never let up and often the pitch was over 12%. The hills were relatively short climbs, (with two longer exceptions), but it was very difficult to get in any kind of rhythm, As soon as we topped a hill we rapidly decended to a hollow and began another climb. We probably did that 20 times! The temperature was off the charts and Bruce and I were very relieved to arrive in Eminence where we will take tomorrow off. Eminence is a resort town that primarily makes its living catering to ... read more

Guest Blog by Bruce We were on the road early today, spinning our pedals towards Ellington, Missouri. Today we rode through the heart of the Ozarks. The weather was forecast to approach record high temps with high humidity in play. We decided to leave early at 7am to try and beat the heat! Our first stop was near Ironton, Mo to view the Ft Davidson  civil war memorial. This was Ulysses Grant’s initial battle as a General, and the Union Army Crushed the Confederates here. Soon we were off to Johnston’s Shut-In State Park & it’s famous swim area. It was steamy hot and we were at the 1/2 way point, so we took the plunge! Complete ecstasy! However, that lolly gagging lasted a bit too long as the final 25 miles of serious climbs and ... read more
