Today was a chance to explore Saratoga, Wyoming. Saratoga has been special since the Native American’s discovered the healing Hot Springs here. The city grew up around the Hot Springs and was initially named Warm Springs. During a smallpox outbreak in 1887, infected individuals went to the Hot Springs and frequently, ( at least in legend) were cured. It became famous after that and a leading citizen, Fenimore Chatterton recommended they rename the city Saratoga after Saratoga Springs in New York. Tourists have been coming here ever since. A local told me there are several High End Dude Ranches in the surrounding area and a resort across the North Platt River known as the Saratoga Hot Springs Resort. I wondered over to the free Hot Springs,( known as the Hobo Pools), and discovered there are three ... read more

After a better nights sleep, I enjoyed a good breakfast at the River Rock Cafe in Walden, Colorado and jumped on the bike for Saratoga, Wyoming. It is always exciting to anticipate entering another State. This will be my seventh state since leaving Yorktown, Va. To Review: Virginia, Kentucky,Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado. As I left Walden, I was back on the chip seal road. My hope was that when I entered Wyoming the roads would improve. Unfortunately that was a pipe dream. Only the name of the State is different. My ride today was through huge ranches with lots of grazing cattle and an occasional home and barn. There are few trees along the Wyoming 230 Highway. After crossing the border at the 21 mile point, I continued a lonely 25 more miles to Riverside,(population ... read more

After a very restless night in Hot Sulphur Springs, I got on the road early after a chocolate milk and a sweet roll. The only restaurant in town didn’t open until 8, and I didn’t want to wait that long to start my ride, (Perhaps that was a poor choice because I am really dragging!) Tha wind pattern seems to be favorable early and then strong out of the Northwest in the afternoon. Today’s ride can be divided into two parts. The first 29 miles was a gradual uphill along Colorado 125 following Willow Creek up a beautiful valley until crossing over the Continental Divide at Willow Creek Pass. 9683feet. ( I’m now back on the East side of the Divide.) It was a beautiful climb and once again I took a lot of pictures. After ... read more

Today was a day every bicycle rider dreams about! I started the day enjoying a great breakfast with Steve, and reluctantly had to say goodbye to begin today’s ride. The two previous days with Steve, Greg and Taylor were so restful and sublime, it is hard to go back to my life riding a bike every day. But I must finish what I started! The first 20 miles was downhill with stunning views of the Blue River and soaring mountains in every direction. The peddling was effortless! Most difficult part of today’s blog has been deciding which of the 50 pictures today should be included. I stopped a lot of times to take in the view and snap some pictures! I love Colorado.❤️❤️ The Blue River flows into the Green Mountain Reservoir and I turned onto ... read more

Today was a great day with Steve, Greg and Taylor enjoying Breckenridge and Frisco Colorado. We had a great lunch, did some minor shopping, some window shopping and Beer tasting. It was a lazy but very enjoyable day from Start to finish. Tomorrow after breakfast with Steve, I’ll say my farewell and jump back on the bike for Sulphur Springs. ... read more

Life is full of surprises, but this was one of the best ever! I woke up this morning knowing that it was going to be a very exciting day! I was finally going to ride over the Continental Divide at Hoosier Pass. It is the highest point on the Trans America Trail, 11,539’ above sea level. I made sure to have a good breakfast and fill my water bottles for this memorable day! At that time, I didn’t know how memorable! The day started out climbing from the moment I jumped on the saddle and continued that way for twelve miles to the top of Hoosier. The serious climbing was about 4 miles long and the thin air was a factor for sure. However, once I got in the rhythm, I just kept a steady pace ... read more

I’m sitting here in Fairplay, Colorado, which sits 9,954 feet above Sea Level. For the last few days, I have been going uphill and the elevation has really added to the difficulty. I was really dragging this morning after my excellent adventure yesterday. I don’t think the Moonshine Bill had me sample last night helped much! I rose early, but waited around until 8am to find Breakfast. I just wasn’t ready to tackle another day of climbing without food! The wait turned out to be a real serendipity, because I ate at the Rolling Thunder Cloud Cafe and had a splendid time. The owners Wayne and Geordi Walston welcomed me as if I was at their home for breakfast. The interior was furnished with not only the traditional tables but had several couches and easy chairs. Today was a one of a kind thoroughly terrific day. From the moment I got on the bike, until 10 minutes ago I have been thoroughly immersed in sensory Utopia! As I began the day, I rode 10 miles from Florence to Canon City and felt the legs loosening up and getting ready for a great day. I had breakfast at a cute little Diner in Canon City named Big Daddy’s and I loved the full plate of pancakes, eggs, ham and hash browns. That gave me the energy to begin my climb up to the Royal Gorge! It was 5 miles uphill off route, but I am so glad I went there! The Suspension Bridge was commissioned and built in 1928 by Canon City and what a great move! Now there is a full industry ... read more

It was hard to leave my wonderful room at the Marriott Suites this morning, but I jumped on the bike about 6:30 and headed out. Once I started pedaling, I got into the groove and had a very pleasant ride to Florence. The weather cooperated pretty well and it was a pleasant ride all the way. It was a gradual climb for the first 30 miles and then partially downhill to Florence. It was so great to see the Rockies getting closer and closer and my legs were happy to get some climbing in. It has been a few weeks since I have seen anything but flat. I passed the Florence Federal Prison on the way and found out when arriving in Florence that the economy here relies on the Federal Prison and a State Prison ... read more

Today was a much needed rest day. I needed this day to evaluate the fires to the north and how they would affect my ride. Nothing is for sure, but after careful evaluation of many resources, I believe the odds are really in my favor for continuing the ride as planned. I feel well rested and am eager to begin climbing after weeks of flat and winds. Off I go to Florence/ Canon City tomorrow and really begin the climbing on Friday. I expect the next several days to be some of the best of my journey. Until tomorrow....... ... read more
