Friday April 30, 2010 It is the last full day of our Egyptian Wonders Tour and it truly was full of wonders. Our last day in Cairo begins at 7:30 AM with a buffet breakfast in the Garden Grill. Rick was really tired from the entire ordeal that he chose to skip dinner and catch a little more shut eye. After breakfast we are to meet with Mo for the last time and our tour of the Cairo Museum and the Hanging Church. Rick and I visited the Cairo museum early in our tour so he decided to stay back at the hotel. Earlier I thought the museum was of British origins. I was mistaken (MO likes to point out my mistakes and lord knows I made a few on this trip) it is of Egyptian ... read more

Thursday April 29, 2010 We get our wakeup call at 7 this morning but Rick was already up and showered by then. Today is departure day from the Miriam and we prepare to leave at 8:00 AM for the Luxor airport and our 1 hour flight to Cairo. It was hard to say good bye to our floating hotel but off we were for the ride to the airport. We boarded our charter flight along with 2 other tour groups at 10 AM soon we were winging through clear skies to the heart of Cairo. We are staying in Cairo at the 5 star hotel Ramses by Hilton, but we are told our rooms will not be ready until after 2 PM. Not one to sit and wait Mohammed has some visits planned for us. First ... read more

April 28, 2010 Our last full day on the MS Miriam. Today we are sailing back to Luxor and through the locks where we will go from the high side of the Nile to the low side. I chose again to sleep in but Rick headed down to breakfast and was kind enough to bring me some sweet rolls and coffee. It is another beautiful day in Egypt, bright sunny and only about 80 F. Since we are sailing north there is a nice breeze so it is wonderful on deck. I spend a few minutes on deck and enjoy the scenes of life along the river. Animals and children playing in the water, children waving at the boat and small villages in the hills complete the scenery. The breeze has brought with it the sands. ... read more

April 27, 2010 Today is the first actual vacation day as today is a day of leisure for some of us. Of our family of 22, nine went to Abu Simbel on an optional excursion ($269). They flew out this morning at 7 AM and are planning to return by 2 PM where we will sail to Kom Ombo. So since Rick was a little under the weather last night we both slept in and missed breakfast! I was up at 9 AM and spent a great morning blogging and labeling the photos and sending them online. Rick slept until noon and readied himself by lunch at 1 PM Our day was very pleasant. I sat with some fellow travelers, swapped stories and just enjoyed a very quiet day aboard ship. Our vacation and travels are ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Aswan April 27th 2010

Today we are in Aswan. Aswan is a city where two dams we built to control the Nile. In ancient time as well as modern times the Nile would flood and recede seasonally alternating flooding the surrounding lands. The god of the Nile is depicted as a man with the head of a crocodile. It is to this god that the Egyptians made offerings so he would control the floods and not destroy the temples. Unfortunately it took man to build two dams, the high the low dams to control the floods and create electricity to allow a modern Egypt to emerge. The first dam, the old or low dam, was built in 1902 by the British using blocks of local granite. The dam is 130 feet tall and is 8,000 feet long making it, at ... read more

Galabaya Night It is now 6: PM and time to don our Egyptian galabaya and join the dinner festivities. As you may recall we were each to obtain our own galabaya. Rick purchased a simple one piece gray and white one from the boat. I chose Ahmed who supplied me with a royal galabaya. It is of while linen with deep red designs along each edge. So the ends of the sleeves and outlining the neck opening are all in red embroidery. Over this is a half coat in white and red embroidery. Very stylish. My head piece is also of linen and is a pink, white and black check. I don the outfit and actually feel it looks good. I soon learn something women have learn and many men have not, you cannot simply walk ... read more

Sunday April 25, 2010 Edfu Egypt Today we get to sleep in, as our wakeup call is 7 AM and not 6 AM. I went to bed an hour later so it did not affect me but I sleep well on boats and am well rested and feel great. Rick is also sleeping through the night, which is highly unusual as he is an insomniac. Only problem is Rick talks in his sleep. Not single words mind, oh no. long conversations and comments. He is concerned that he is talking dirty. I assure him if he were I would listen better, but alas his conversations in his sleep are boring. Tonight is Galabaya night. This is the night at dinner we all don ancient costumes, called a Galabaya (I spelled it wrong in an earlier entry ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Upper Egypt » Valley of the Kings April 24th 2010

The Valley of the Kings. You all have heard of this most famous burial spot in the entire world. Here we have the underground tombs of some unknown number of Pharaohs, Queens, Priests, Artists and workers of the ancient world. It is also the burial spot for King Tutankhamen, the boy king, son of Akhenaton and step son of Nefertiti. Our departure at 7 was preceded by the usual breakfast buffet. It seems that our terminal traveler, The Aussie with the runs Graham, is feeling better and will try to join us. Aloma unfortunately is still without her clothes and due to a domestic squabble we lost one other lady, June, who was too embarrassed to join us. I do not know actually what happened here only that over some wine someone said something to someone ... read more

It is Friday morning and the day is beautiful. It is only going to be about 80 degrees today. Normally the temperature in Dendera is above 90 so we are thankful. Last night, our first on the boat was interesting. We enjoyed a late dinner, a sumptuous buffet meal consisting of several different salads, olives, cheeses and soup. To this was added fish, meat and chicken followed up by one of several sweets for dessert, coffee and tea. Our wait staff was very attentive being Johnny on the spot to fulfill your every need. Remember the boat usually has a passenger manifest of 150 we are only 48 so attention to customer need is very noticeable. We sat around chatting and I did some blogging but by and by I grew tired and headed up to ... read more
