Believe it or not today is actually only day 2 of the actual tour! What we have done so far will be remember for a lifetime and there is more to go, much more. Today dawns early, and I do mean early, 4AM. Our wakeup call was a little off kilter at 4:45 AM but this is Egypt and no one is on time or in a hurry. Why so early? Well today we catch a flight from Cairo to Luxor at 8: AM so we can visit Karnak and begin the next aspect of the tour, the Nile Cruise. So we head to Cairo in very early morning traffic and arrive on 45 minutes later. We head to a private terminal where we prepare to board our charter flight for the 1 hour trip to ... read more

Thursday April 22, 2010 aboard the MS Miriam. OH MY GOD! What a boat, what a view and what a meal, but I am jumping ahead. As you may recall I pooped out last night at 11:00 PM while writing this blog so I only got so far on Wednesdays activities. So allow me to continue We are still at the Giza Plateau and the sites are beautiful and a great statement of man’s achievement marred only by the presence of hawkers. And aggressive hawkers at that. Let me explain (or rather complain). Soon as you make eye contact you are a target. They walk up to you ask where are you from and somehow they have been there. Then, they hand you something and say it is a present, and a second later they want ... read more

Wednesday April 21, 2010, the actual first day of the tour begins. This morning was the first time we were to become a “family” for the next 10 days. We got the wakeup call at 6:30 AM, prearranged by our tour guide Mohammed. A quick shower and down we go to breakfast and the first meeting of the gang. Now Cathy and the boys know from experience that this first meeting leaves a lasting impression and true to form several people “left their impression” immediately. The first interaction was with the 6 people who felt they were the only ones on the tour. This group consisted of and oriental woman and her husband (late 20’s), a middle aged man and his wife, and a slightly older husband and wife (Aussies All). Rick and I sat down ... read more

Tuesday evening is cool and breezy and the perfect time for a casual stroll and a light dinner. Just before dinner I head downstairs, Rick is still napping, to see what action is like. It seems like some of the new Trafalgar folks who are on our tour are beginning to arrive. I meet one lady of about 60 from NYC who recently lost her husband to cancer and her luggage to the black hole of air travel. She was bumped from her original flight on Sunday to allow for some stranded volcano refugees to go closer to home and her luggage apparently went with the refugees. No one knows exactly where however and she is worried she will be wearing long sleeves and brown for two weeks. If she does not get her luggage tomorrow ... read more

Tuesday morning dawned bright and early, 7:30 AM. It was bright dry and already about 79 degrees with a light breeze. Speaking of breezes…. Remember the tea from yesterday? Well as you may recall I was concerned that I may have made a mistake drinking even this little amount of local water as my stomach was a bit rebellious last night. Let’s just say there was an ill breeze blowing all evening that contributed to the smog and the ….well you know. Anyway by the morning the winds of change have died down and the tea brought no further ill will and we headed down for a hearty and free breakfast. With the Chan mystery behind us we settle in for a typical European/Egyptian breakfast. The selection was enormous. First there were breads of every kind, ... read more

Let’s back up the camel a little and revisit an event from Monday shall we? Late in the afternoon Rick and I entered the elevator to go down to the lobby to head out for some air and there in the elevator was a young Oriental gentleman wearing blue jeans, blue boater shoes and a black tee shirt with a print of an Anubis on the front. I look closer and I swear he looks just like JACKIE CHAN! For those who do not know him, Jackie is a martial arts and comedic actor whose work I admire and have seen many of his films. So there is this guy and I ask him “tell me why you look exactly like Jackie Chan?” Now Jackie has a very distinct way of speaking and in perfect Jackieeese ... read more

Day 1 CAIRO We have all seen Cairo on TV, in the movies and in books. Crowded, dirty, noisy and impoverished. Nothing can prepare you for the real CAIRO. Let’s back up a bit to arrival shall we? We set down on schedule at Cairo International Airport at 11:00 AM Monday April 19, 2010. The weather is a balmy 90 degrees and climbing. The sky is a blue dusty red as there is red dust in the sky hanging low overhead. Not a cloud in the sky and nothing but sand everywhere. We deplane and walk about ½ mile through the terminal to the first checkpoint. We have to buy a VISA at the bank and 2 minutes and $15 USD each we have our VISA and are in a very short line for passport control. ... read more

We arrived into JFK airport in NY after an uneventful flight from Detroit. We were late taking off, what else is new, but with a 6 hour layover no great loss. We took an hour off in the Northwest Sky Club for some food and drink and headed across to terminal 4 to get our Egyptian Air boarding passes. Unfortunately we arrived in terminal 2! We asked a nice cop how to get there on foot? She told us to go downstairs turn right at the bottom of the stairs pass two fences and walk straight on. Cross two fences? Are we supposed to climb over or dig under? She shrugged and walked on. So down we go, turn right go outside and ask cop number 2, how we can walk to terminal 4. “You can’t” ... read more

For a journey of this magnitude planning in advance is critical. Plan everything in advance, check the plan and modify the plan as necessary. Write it down and keep notes of what has been done and what is left to do. Believe me it is worth the trouble. To insure the safety and security of the experience plan to learn about the culture. Do not show the bottom of your foot it is an insult. Do not touch someone with your left hand, it is a curse. Plan for the weather, Cairo will be 93 - 98 degrees in the day and 65 - 75 at night. Remember this is the desert so it is a dry heat but it is still hot. Men should not wear shorts, it is an insult. Drink bottled water as ... read more

Before one can travel to a third world country one must get shot. Well immunized really but since I hate needles “shot” will work out just fine. I was trying to avoid getting shot, but my wife, ever concerned for my health out flanked me. She one day asked me if I needed shots to go to Egypt. I piped up, too quickly I guess, NOPE all is good. Of course she checked it out. After a clandestine call to the health department she confided to me in bed one night, “you need to get shot, she claims she said “immunized”, before you go. I wined as told her I do not have the time or an appointment. Of course she already made the appointment and there I was, sentenced to be shot on Friday April ... read more
