Today we will enjoy a city tour with the lovely Maria. After a hearty breakfast, served buffet style we met in the lobby to begin the long day of sightseeing, dining and buying. Our small group of four joined another group of 16 as we took our bus to the Acropolis. Since Cathy and I have been to the Acropolis on our last visit, we elected to leave the group and visit the air conditioned Acropolis Museum. Good move on our part since at 9 in the morning it was already 95 degrees heading to high of 107 by 2 pm. The Acropolis Museum is where the real artifacts from the Acropolis are housed. Here we saw the statues and reliefs that once adorned the lintel of the Acropolis and learned how they were restoring the ... read more

Today we visited Turkey for a city tour of Instanbul. Turkey sits on the border of Europe and Asia and Instanbul is actually half in Europe and half in Asia. The city is ancient and crowded. Our first stop was the palace at Topkapi. Here for centuries the rulers of Turkey, the Sultans, lived with there 500 wives (busy guy) and ruled the better part of the known world. The Palace became a museum in 1954 when the last Sultan was deposed during the white revolution, so called because no one died. Since then the Palace, and all its treasures, have been open to the public. Here we saw the ornate daily items used by the Sultan, gold and diamond coffee cups, solid gold plates and even a solid gold cradle,we tried to get one for ... read more

Today we leave for our 7 day cruise. Up at 7:30 for another hearty breakfast. Our bags out the door at 8:00 for a 8:45 departure. Well almost. We needded our passports today since we were actually leaving Greece for an overnight trip to Turkey. I usually keep the family passports, but today we each had our own. After breakfast, our bags in the bus, Cathy remembers her passport was packed in her bag! No big deal. They unpack the bus and pull out her bag. Now comes the fun part. She has no idea where in the bag is the passport. Unfortunately, she had to unpack the entire bag to find the passport burried in the bottom of the bag. So there she sat, on the suidewalk, clothes everywhere, can you imgine the wrinkles? After ... read more

Our first day in Athens was wonderful. The temperture hovered around 100 degrees F with calm winds. The Trafalgar tour guide was waiting for us right outside of baggage. It took less than 1/2 an hour to get our bags and clear customs. Detroit Airport could take a lesson in efficiency from the Greeks. Our ticket included a ride from the airport, usually in a bus, to our hotel. Oddly enough, we were led by the tour guide to a private Mercedes taxi and wwre driven to the Metropolitan Hotel on the outskirts of Athens. This was really odd since we usually expect to wait for others to arrive at the airport. This was great since we were at the hotel by noon. Our room was ready, so we took a quick shower and headed out to ... read more

I want to report that our 9 hour 17 minute trans-Atlantic flight was smooth and uneventful.Yup I sure would sure like to report that but I can't. As our departure time approached, so did the lightening and torrential rains. The airport was at a ground hold for 45 minutes as we waited for the storms to pass. Then the computer system went down, humm imagine that Air Canada was having computer problems. Finally we boarded the flight, Cathy in row 36 and me in row 43, they could not seem to successfully allow us to travel together, computer problems. Now, anyone who has been in an airplane for 9 hours knows the best way to handle a long flight is to go to sleep soon as possible and stay asleep as long as possible. That was my ... read more

Today we explore the relevance of the old adage "Murhys Law" if it can go wrong it will, at the worst possible time"....and it did. How can something go wrong already? All we did so far is get up, drive to the airport and check in.Well, check in was a huge issue. Let me explain. We arrived without incident to the airort, North Terminal, to check in at Air Canada. Air Canada has a code share with United. Yesterday, I tried to get my boarding pass on line as I always do, but was unsuccessful. I called Air Canada directly and was on hold for 1 hour only to be told that this flight was airport checkin only. Nice to know, so I just assumed that I woud check in at the airport. Arrived at 8:30 ... read more

In less than 24 hours the journey begins. I am all packed into a duffal bag on wheels. Everything I need boils down to 43 pounds. I have an additional carry on camelback backpack so I can have sufficient water for the hot days ahead. Cathy, on the other hand, is still packing! Our dining room is covered in clothes and wires; for her computer, cell phone and things I have never seen before. There are 5 pair of shoes, dresses, bathing suites, and more clothes than I think a person can wear in 14 days! I have learned a long time ago...say nothing. Eventually she will winnow it down to something manageable. Tomorrow we depart Detroit and head to Toronto where we plan to watch the World Cup game before we depart for the overnight ... read more

Getting ready for a trip is always a joy and a trauma. We knew we wanted to go via Trafalgar, we have been on 6 tours with them and they are always GREAT. I found out that I could save 10% by being a Costco member. That's right Trafalgar will give you 10% right off the top. Then as a previous traveler we got an additional 10% PLUS the tour was on sale. So we had no choice but to go, right? Air flights are always tough overseas. I checked for days and could not get a reasonable fare. Finally I saw flights on Air Canada direct through Toronto for the lowest fare anywhere so BOOM booked and ready to go. Another great idea was to use Trivago. We are staying a few EXTRA days in ... read more
