The concensus is to head off about 1pm today to give us enough time to get to Turon where the Polish leg of the Speedway Grand Prix is being held (albeit the meeting starts at 7pm and we're not sure what there is to do in Turon), so we potter about in our room until it’s time to leave. I can tell Greg is nervous about the rain in case the meeting gets rained off, and keeps optimistically saying he can see chinks of blue sky in the distance. Hmmmm, if you say so. For a place which is smaller than Bydgoszcz, Turon has all the charm and hustle and bustle of somewhere a lot bigger. After a brief check of the stadium and then a look around a massive shopping mall next door (where Greg ... read more

Due to the 3 bottles of wine along with all the beer and vodka that we drank last night, we sleep in and miss breakfast. Archie and Margaret are looking fresh as usual (how the hell do they manage it?) and suggest we take a walk into the centre of town. On the way we spot a McDonald's sign, and we really need to soak up the alcohol with some junk food so make a quick beeline for the doors. Suitably fed again, we wander into the old town. To be fair their isn't a ridiculous amount to see, and we pretty much walk round the whole thing in about 30 minutes. On the way back we spot a shopping mall so nip in for a nosy, and then stop for a coffee in a nice ... read more

The drive today is another bugger as once again there isn't a motorway or main road that takes us directly from Wroclaw to Bydgyoschz so even though it’s not massively far, it's gonna take us double the time to get there. We leave around midday and are soon motoring along the Polish equivalent of the A9 at a world record average speed of about 40 mph. It's actually not that bad a drive though and we manage to keep ourselves amused by cracking bad jokes in a polish accent and quoting lines from our favourite movies. At one point a local police car pulls in behind us and proceeds to tail us for what seems like the next 4 hours (but is actually only about 10 minutes). We are so paranoid about being pulled over and ... read more

Day 5 - Ljubljana to Vienna via Maribor We set off at a reasonable time this morning as checkout is at 10am. Ive got one of my first good nights sleep since we left ibiza so i'm feeling refreshed and ready to go. Thankfully charlie doesn't reek too much of stale milk, but we give him a wee spray of febreze anyway. We arrive in Maribor early lunchtime and its a lovely little town in the north of slovenia. In the centre of town there's a pretty square with a museum on one side and a church with a tall tower you can climb up on the other side. We opt to go up the tower but first check how much it costs as we are on a budget after all. Gregs is delighted when the ... read more

I am struggling to lift my head off the pillow this morning, having been woken up by the maids at about 9am and then falling back into a restless sleep again. For once in our lives we've actually prepared ourselves for our journey by double checking google maps and writing down extra instructions on which way to go, so fingers crossed we don't get too lost today. We’ve heard Poland is notoriously difficult to drive in, so we need all the help we can get. The down side to the first part of our drive is there is no direct motorway to where we are going, so we have to try and navigate lots of little roads instead. The European road map we brought doesn't seem to have any of these little roads on the map ... read more

Day 4 - Treviso to Ljubljana We get a great nights sleep in our comfy big bed with no outside noise at all. We say goodbye to the staff and head off to our next stop- Slovenia. This could be interesting if the road signs are all in Slovenian as the last time I checked, I dint speak Slovenian, and I don't really think our Spanish will help us on this one either. Things start off well enough, but soon turn sour, in more ways than one (you'll understand shortly). As we cross the border into Slovenia, the traffic grinds to a complete stop. There doesn't seem to be any explanation and we can't see anything up ahead. We stay like this for about 10 minutes before inching forward slowly. In another 20 minutes we've moved ... read more

Day 3 - Nice to Treviso We are really glad we decided to wait until today to visit Monaco as it is a lovely, warm sunny day. The drive along the coast to Monaco is breathtaking, one of the nicest roads I have ever been on, with views from the mountains down to the sea and pretty towns below. The only negative is that it's a one lane road and we manage to get stuck behind mr magoo. Greg decides to reinact a scene from James bond Goldeneye and overtakes on a bend. "Why, Mr McWhinie, are you trying to show off the size of your... ego?" we both thought Nice was full of money, but as we enter Monaco it is on a whole new level, even the public toilets look like a 3 star hotel. ... read more

We manage to drag ourselves out of bed at 9am this morning to make the most of the free breakfast provided in the hotel. In true tight Scottish fashion we make a disgrace of ourselves by eating as much as we can, and then making our own sandwiches to take away for lunch as well. By the time we get organised it is already after 10 so we need to get moving as we have a long 6 hour drive ahead and need to get to Monaco while it's still light. We make the decision to follow the old single lane road instead of the motorway as it is cheaper (no tolls) but we take a wrong turn and end up back in Girona an hour after we left. I'm really not amused and in the ... read more

We have to be out of our hotel room by 11am, which is not the earliest start we've had, but it’s early enough, especially as the bratwurst we had last night has been wrecking havoc on my poor digestive system. I knew there was a reason we weren't friends, but the vast amount of beer washed down with it can't have helped much either. We've no food in for breakfast again, so have to make do with a tin of peaches (from our food bag) eaten by hand of course as we have no cutlery. To spice things up we add the luxury addition of a yoghurt drink. At least we should be on budget for food! I decide it’s my turn to take over the driving for this part of the trip and Greg will ... read more

Day 1 - Ibiza to Girona Can’t believe the day has finally come for us to leave our lovely little Ibizenco abode to head for (not so) sunnier climates and pastures new. The sun has come out for us for one last time, and the only downside to the start of our day is the fact we’ve had to get up at the unsightly hour of 7.30am. I look and feel like an extra from Sean of the dead, whereas Greg seems quite fresh and raring to go. I wish I could share his enthusiasm, but as he knows well enough by now, give me another 2 or 3 hours and I shall be in a slightly more sociable mood again. Once more we load up wee Charlie, and then soon enough he is being bundled ... read more
