Day 4 – Millau Our free parking stops at 9am this morning so we have another extremely early start (well by our standards anyway). We are away by half 9, which is actually just as well as it says it takes 8 hours to get to Millau! There was me thinking it would be a casual 3-4 hour drive. The drive is pretty non eventful, just really tiring and by the time we drive into Millau at 7.30pm we are knackered. Millau is a pretty little town in the heart of the mountains but it is quiet as it is outwith the tourist season, so we talk a stroll to find a restaurant that is open. We stumble upon a place and have some duck followed by a crepe with chocolate (you just have to while ... read more

Greg suggests we try to get up reasonably early today as we have a lot of sightseeing to do, including the Eiffel tower. So we set our alarm for 10am and I still struggle to lift my head from the pillow. Greg can’t even tempt me with the offer of opening my presents. In the end I succumb to his moaning and get up so I can open some birthday presents. I get a gorgeous bracelet and watch from Greg’s mum and dad, plus an obscene amount of money. Greg really outdoes himself with my present- the adoption of a great white shark called ‘Cut tail’ who is apparently 16 feet long and over 23 years old!!! It’s one of the best presents I’ve ever had - he knows all too well my obsession with sharks! ... read more

Managed to drag ourselves out of bed at an unsightly hour again (by unsightly i mean 8am, a normal time of day for most people, but not a DJ and nightclub manager). We pack up and head off towards the ferry port, which we manage to find it surprisingly easily, and when we get to the check in gate there are no queues and it is really quiet. Turns out the reason it is so quiet as we have tried to check into the cruise ship port instead of our Dunkirque ferry port. We ask the guard nicely if we can go on a cruise seeing as we are here now, but he just laughs at us before directing us back round to the right entrance. Customs at the border are more straightforward than i thought ... read more

I admit I was a bit worried that we would sleep through our alarms today and end up waking up at about 3pm as usual, but for once we manage to get up and ready before 9am, wow! Greg loads up the car and after some breakfast to keep us going, we get on our way. Just as I think things are going far too well, I realize they are. We put the sat nav on to set our destination and realize the charger for it isn’t working. I have a bit of a flap (as usual) and Greg as easy going as ever says “it’s cool, we’ll just buy one at a service station or something”. I begin to get even more worked up as I’m thinking what service station will sell a spare car ... read more

Day 10 Back to Christchurch today! We’ve already done most of the cheap options available in Christchurch, so it would have been good if we could have skipped it but never mind. We arrive in the afternoon and after getting some supplies in, we head over to the local museum. Not usually our cup of tea, but our bus driver told us it is meant to be really good, and it’s FREE. The museum is actually really good and there are lots of things to see. Greg is delighted when he comes across a speedway section edicated to the Kiwi speedway rider Ivan Mauger. They have a gold plated speedway bike and everything. We manage to while away an hour or so and then back to the hostel again. Greg makes us some delicious dinner- he’s ... read more

Day 1 - Sunday 28th June 2009 - Christchurch Woke up to the sound of someone incessantly buzzing the flat door at 5am today, and just as I am about to go crazy and shout to them to give it a rest, I realize it is our taxi driver for the airport! I had set my alarm for 4.30am but must have slept through it and have visions of Tasmania all over again… We run around like crazy and grab our suitcases- no time to wash or even brush our teeth, and it’s probably just as well that we both slept in our clothes. Jacki sleepily pops her head round the door and laughs as she expects nothing less from us. Thankfully the taxi driver waits for is and we’re on our way. I am soo ... read more

Time to leave Airlie Beach and head for the Outback. We leave the hostel at 10am and make our way to Mount Surprise (roughly a ten hour drive) As we leave Airlie, we meet Stefan from our cruise and say goodbye to him as we head up north. En route, I make a phone call to a working backpacker hostel in Innisfail, and shock horror, they advise us they have work for us starting this Monday. Good news as we could do with the exrtra cash but we’ll see what happens. As we make our way inland, our first stop is Charters Towers. A small rural town 100km inland, resembling a town from a western movie. After a slow but delicious lunch, we head on to Mount Surprise. We are not sure what to expect in ... read more

As we arrive in Cairns we decide we need to look for work asap as we are running out of money. Greg gets offered a few dj shifts in a nightclub and I have an interview with the Hilton, but it is clear we are unsure whether Cairns is for us. The weather is gorgeous and sunny, but there is not a great deal to do in the city itself. We also felt that the road trip from Sydney was such an awesome experience, that when it came time to find work in Cairns, we had ran out of energy and motivation. We were running out of money and were not prepared to dip into our New Zealand and USA fund. The next thing we would have to consider was looking for a flat, and in ... read more

Day 16 Get up early doors to catch our boat, The Avatar for our 3 day 2 night Whitsunday Island Tour. The Whitsundays are a group of 74 Islands located on the Great Barrier Reef, off the east coast of Northern Queensland. We manage to get a reasonable sleep even although there was some idiot playing his guitar until 2am. We arrive at the marina on a beautiful winters day, with the mercury reaching approximately 26 degrees, and are ready for our adventure. After a spot of lunch, we head to our first snorkeling spot. We are told this is merely an introductory snorkel to get us ready for the real thing tomorrow. We see plenty of coral and fish, and are promised tomorrows spot will be even better. I am a bit scared of going ... read more

Mackay - Airlie Beach via Cedar Creek Falls We wake up early today as we have two skylights in our room without any curtains covering them, so it proves impossible to sleep once the sun rises. I managed to get quiet a good nights sleep and would have slept right through if it hadn’t of been for Greg sleep talking saying “We are going to go on loads of big rides tomorrow.” Have a bit of a freaky moment in the hostel when Greg spots a guy in our hostel who had been watching the Rangers v Dundee Utd game next to us in the Score bar in Sydney. Can’t believe he is in the same hostel as us at the exact same time. Spooky! On our way to Airlie Beach we stop off at a ... read more
