I admit I was a bit worried that we would sleep through our alarms today and end up waking up at about 3pm as usual, but for once we manage to get up and ready before 9am, wow! Greg loads up the car and after some breakfast to keep us going, we get on our way. Just as I think things are going far too well, I realize they are. We put the sat nav on to set our destination and realize the charger for it isn’t working. I have a bit of a flap (as usual) and Greg as easy going as ever says “it’s cool, we’ll just buy one at a service station or something”. I begin to get even more worked up as I’m thinking what service station will sell a spare car charger, what if the sat nav cuts out before then, we don’t have any maps as back up, and why didn’t we check all this last night?? It ends up in an unnecessary full blown argument resulting in us nearly not getting any further than Busby. No seriously, I was nearly walking to Dover. As it turns out, we ingeniously use the in car charger
for the ipod coupled with my camera USB wire and lo and behold it starts to charge. Only thing is, it won’t let you put the sat nav on at the same time it is charging, but at least it’s better than nothing. So eventually we are off and finally head on to the M74 and take one last look back at Glasgow. Still can’t believe we are driving all the way to Ibiza, nearly 2000 miles. But if we can do it in Australia then we can do it here too.
We have a few stops off at service stations along the way (one of which has an electrical store in it which sells in car chargers doh) and before we know it, we have arrived at Poole. Greg cracks up laughing when I ask him (what I think is a very valid and reasonable question) about whether England has castles. We didn’t get lost or argue once, wow again. It takes us about 9 hours to get there as we arrive just before 7pm. The speedway meeting was a worthwhile detour, after the initial first 3 heats which took an hour to complete! Glad we got a chance to watch it and its another place we can tick off of our little speedway meeting locations.
By the time we leave, it’s nearing 10pm and the sat nav says it will take us another 3 hours to get to Dover, which means we won’t get in until nearly 1am. Must admit the prospect is not appealing. Greg says he feels fine to drive so off we head again. Finally we arrive at Dover, just before 1am as estimated. On first glance it appears to be locked up for the night and I have visions of sleeping in JOT (Greg’s car), but eventually we realize we are trying to get in the wrong building. Our ferry is booked for 10am tomorrow so it means not much sleep, but I guess we have made up for all the sleeping in the last year! One rancid cup of hotel tea later and we hit the hay for another busy day tomorrow.
