Summertime and the weather is hot… Any more songs I can throw in for good measure? As you can tell, the weather has finally turned from the freak wet weather we had in April, and although this is now the ‘official’ rainy season, it strangely seems to have brought mostly sunshine and heat along with it. Temperatures are on average about 35 degrees and this means we will hopefully no longer look like typical pasty white Scots again. Actually, we fit in quite well here as most of the people want to be as white as us lol. However, the humidity is another thing altogether and on some days you feel like you could cut the air in half it’s so heavy and cloying. The rain (when it does come) seems to last for a few ... read more

It’s our last full day of sightseeing today, and we’ve definitely saved the best till last- a trip to the Great Wall of China. Contrary to what most people think, the Great wall is actually quite far outside of the city centre, so in order to get to it you have to book a tour to take you there. Well, at least that’s what we thought you had to do until Greg found an article online which tells you how to get there on your own without a tour guide. This could be a risky strategy especially given our track record, but we both agree that if it all goes horribly wrong then we will bite the bullet and pay over the top for a guided tour instead. Our strategy involves getting the train to the ... read more

Our hotel room is lovely (and really quiet- not a circular saw within earshot, hurrah!) but the only negative is that it is extremely hot so I get quite a restless sleep and wake up rather dehydrated. It’s 11.30am so we drag ourselves out of bed whilst we can still claim it is morning (you’d think it gets easier to get up early as you get older, but for me it seems harder- probably because I need more beauty sleep than most). I can imagine many people gasping at how late we are waking up based on how much we have to see and do here, but we know we’ll be up much later than most people, so it will surely balance itself out. Anyway, it’s clear, blue skies outside and the sun is shining, so ... read more

Eventually I must have drifted off to sleep but am awakened again at 8am, then 9am and eventually decide to get up at about 10am. Thank goodness for earplugs and my ipod, which has drowned out the noise of the little boy who has been chatting and giggling away since about 7am. Overall I feel quite refreshed and probably managed about 6 hours sleep (a travelling miracle as usually I’m lucky to grab about 1 or 2). The original plan was to watch the changing scenery (part of the reason we booked the slow train), but actually there doesn’t seem to be much to see. We were expecting rolling hills and then barron dessert, but it’s mostly just fields with some houses and factories dotted along the way and it never changes so we give up. ... read more

Our train to Beijing doesn’t leave until 6pm, so for once we can get up at a leisurely time and not have to rush around whilst still half asleep (resulting in the possibility of forgetting vital documents, or ending up travelling in the wrong direction- not like that's something that has ever happened to us before....). I’m really excited for the trip, but also really nervous about the 21 hour train journey, sharing a carriage with 2 strangers who might be complete nutters. And that’s after we even manage to get on the right train. But unlike our trip to Guilin, this time we have proper allocated seat numbers, and trains tend to run much more efficiently than buses without the need to stop at disgusting service stations. And at the risk of sounding judgemental, the ... read more

‘Someone’ decided it would be a good idea to go out for a few beers last night even though we knew we had to be up for 9am today. ‘Someone’ then also thought it would be a good idea to stay out drinking until 3am, resulting in two tired and slightly hungover Scots this morning. Thankfully we had the sense to pack the night before for a change, so we only really need to roll out of bed and get dressed. Apart from a slightly sore head, we’ve managed to fair pretty well considering, and are ready for our 10 hour bus journey across China into Guilin. It’s quite exciting but also quite daunting at the same time as we have absolutely no idea where we are going, and don’t speak the language. But hey, that’s ... read more

February Apart from September (when we didn’t have a clue where we were and what we were doing), February has been one of the bleakest months in our Chinese travels so far. Why? I hear you ask. Well, let me explain. Firstly, we have the holiday blues after having a great time in Bali with great weather and great company (most of the time anyway lol). We only had 2 actual weeks holiday off compared to everyone else here who had a full month off, but that’s still long enough for us to get lazy and out of the habit of teaching. Secondly, our kids came back after the holidays as enthusiastic as we are, and it seems every classroom rule and word of English we have taught them has completely vanished into thin air. So ... read more

Greg’s feeling no better this morning and thankfully for me I sleep through his diarrhoea trips during the night, especially as our toilet has no door on it! I spend the afternoon chilling at the pool by myself, evening out the red patches, whilst Greg makes himself acquaintances with the porcelain bowl. I check on him a while layer and he's still not doing particularly well. I manage to convince him to go out to get something to eat to keep his energy up, but unfortunately the thought of eating most foods are making him feel pretty disgusting. One of the few things he feels he can stomach is pizza, so we head into a little trattoria across from our hotel. We look like those typical couples on holiday who have nothing left to say to ... read more

Woo-ooh we’re going to Ba-li. Whoo-ooh, back to the island When 4pm on sunday comes around I actually do a little dance around the classroom as we are finally finished work for two whole weeks! My students look at me like i'm even more weirder than usual as I skip out of the classroom singing 'holiday-ay'. We feel we've earned it and can't believe we've made it through our first term alive. We head home and do a quick turnaround before heading to catch our bus to Hong Kong where we're staying for the evening. Our original plan was to have a few beers on the bus journey there but we are so knackered that a coffee sounds much more appealing at the moment. Conveniently, they've just opened a new Starbucks right next to the hotel ... read more

I’ve definitely got the Christmas blues after having such a wonderful time on Christmas day with lots of food, presents and spending time with friends. However, we’re still looking forward to a day off at New Year and seeing what the day brings…. We’re not usually a massive fan of New Year celebrations, opting to either work or spend it doing something low key, but it will be interesting to see how Chinese people celebrate it, if at all. We’ve been invited to a house party for westerners by one of our friends, but we kind of feel past that particular way of socialising now, and are hoping to do something more sophisticated instead. Our sophisticated plan for the evening consists of taking a bottle of wine into the park to watch the live show and ... read more
