Many people have this wonderful image of Spain that it is all sun, sea and sangria; everyone is happy, the sun is always shining and there’s nothing better to do than relax with a cold beer in hand… Of course that’s true if you are on a nice two week break on the coast in the height of summer, but as an ex-pat living and working here all year round, the reality is slightly different. I thought I would write this post from an honest perspective, as it’s easy for foreigners living abroad to paint this amazing picture of how their life is full of the above stereotypes every day, and it encourages others to head in search of this dream only to be disappointed when it isn’t exactly as it seems. I know that sounds ... read more

Once again I sit here in the sunshine with cup of tea in hand whilst writing my latest blog. The difference being that now I am doing it from the comfort of my own balcony in Alicante, and the temperature has increased by at least 10 degrees if not more. So yes, as you’ve guessed, we are now the proud ‘rentees’ of our own little apartment in the North of Alicante. It’s not the biggest flat in the world, but it has a big terrace overlooking our huge swimming pool, and in the distance you can see the sea peeking out over the horizon. We stuck to our guns about the area we wanted to rent in, as we are only a 15 minute stroll to the nearest beach and it’s one of the cleanest, quietest ... read more

“Are you an ex-pat? On minimum wage and a temporary part-time contract? Thinking of renting a flat in Alicante? Well contact us now: Rejectionville estate agents, serving none of your needs all of the time” We excitedly started hunting for flats in Alicante as soon as we receive our first contract in Spain, not worrying too much about the fact it states we are only on a 6 week trial and legally were only working 5 hours a week each. Right now we are focused on the task in hand and arranging viewings for flats in the sought after area of Cabo Huertas and Playa de San Juan at the north end of the city. We decided to focus our searches there as we are already working in that area and so knew it ... read more

I sit here writing this in the hazy sunshine with cup of milky tea in hand (I am still British after all) and enjoying the peace and tranquillity of a Sunday siesta in Spain. Lesson plans can wait until manana, best make the most of this weather… It’s easy to paint a perfect picture of our new life here in Spain, but the truth is I’m quite glad to see the back of February. Okay, so we’ve been lucky enough to have found someone daft enough to employ us as teachers (even more so because there are two of us and not just one) and we’ve managed to forge some sort of semi-normal routine, but it’s been a slow process. It’s not been helped by the fact today is one of the very few days this ... read more

I can’t believe we are fast approaching the end of our second week here in Spain- how time flies when you are a jobless bum lol. It’s weird to think usually we’d be gearing up to fly home now and feeling tremendously sad about that, but instead we know we remain here indefinitely… (gosh that sounds a bit like we’re holed up in prison or something). Well it’s been a bit of an up and down week for us, but mostly ups. The start of the week has been very much job focused so we’ve spent a fair amount of time travelling around the Costa Blanca handing our CVs into training centres and giving them our best Spanish phrases (Greg) and best smiles (me). The problem we face at the moment is most places only tend ... read more

So this is it. The start of our new life. I’m not sure if I’m meant to feel any different or not but I don’t really. Well, I do feel quite nervous and slightly weird about looking for work whilst staying in our flat in Spain which has up until now always been a holiday home. As per usual whenever we arrive somewhere new, we head out to the supermarket to stock up on the essentials and food to live on for the week. It feels really good to be able to get back into cooking our own healthy stuff again (my waistline has suffered over Christmas and seems to have expanded slightly…) and it’s also a novelty having a car to carry everything in (walking for a mile there and back in the baking heat ... read more

After a ropey night’s sleep feeling itchy and several trips in the night to the shared toilets at the end of the corridor, we get up for half 10 and repack the car for the last time. At least we know this is the final leg of the journey and tomorrow we can just sit and relax- it’s a very nice thought. Hungry for some breakfast, we stop off at another Autogrill service station and choose our new French favourite- chicken, ratatouille and rice lol (along with another rancid coffee to wash it down with). We power on through and after what seems like a lifetime, we pass the welcome to Spain sign, woohoo! There are a number of armed policemen at the border, possibly in relation to the recent terrorist problems in France so even ... read more

Thankfully the wind has died down again so it shouldn’t feel like we’re reinacting a scene from the perfect storm on our ferry crossing today. After an early-ish start, we repack Charlie who groans under the weight (and probably wonders ‘why me again?’) and then set off. Our ferry has annoyingly been delayed by an hour and a half which will dramatically eat into our driving time in France, but luckily we're offered a chance to go on an earlier ferry which arrives in Dunkerque instead of Calais, so we opt for that. We’re directed onto the ferry by workers in their reflective jackets and park closely to the rear of the car in front for fear of being shouted at for not being close enough and to make sure there is enough room for everyone ... read more

On a Cold, windy morning in January, we start loading charlie the clio with all our wordly possessions for our last road trip to Dover, across France and onto our final destination of Spain! I’ve decided to take charge of the tetris-style car packing so everything fits in properly (and I don’t trust Greg to do it) as at this moment I am slightly concerned how optimistic we are about how much a Renault clio can hold. It’s all going quite well until it starts torrentially raining (with a sprinkle of hailstones chucked in for good measure) meaning I get completely soaked – I’m sooooo glad I bothered to straighten my hair this morning. Lo and behold as soon as I finish packing the car, the rain stops. Weather 1, Nikki 0. Apparently our friends have ... read more

Summertime and the weather is hot… Any more songs I can throw in for good measure? As you can tell, the weather has finally turned from the freak wet weather we had in April, and although this is now the ‘official’ rainy season, it seems to have brought mostly sunshine and heat along with it. When it does rain, thankfully it only lasts for a few hours rather than for days on end, and brings with it some pretty spectacular thunder and lightning shows (it's like Singapore on steroids). Temperatures are on average about 35 degrees so surely we can finally ditch our pasty white skin and look exotic and tanned again?? We do get some strange looks from the locals though who have an adverse fear of anything to do with sun, so while we ... read more
