Geo: 40.6299, 14.4863Our walk today was taking us from Praiano over to Positano via the well known Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods), but clearly the Gods were not concerned with the local traffic. Just as we set out from the hotel we were entertained by the stand off between the local bus, the cars and a number of scooters - all trying to get through a very narrow street and no one prepared to give way to one another. Classic! After the amusing traffic impasse was resolved we moved on and quickly reached the edge of Praiano and began the uphill climb to the abandoned monastery of San Domenico which lies on a high rocky promontory overlooking Vèttica Maggiore and Positano. Slow and steady was the only way to ascend the stepped path and fortunately ... read more

Geo: 40.6118, 14.524A superb walking day - The predicted thunderstorms held off and we were treated to sunny and pleasant weather. As usual the day started off with steps up - there really is no other way out of Amalfi if you are walking. Then we had a really scenic gradual ascent up to Lone and Vettica Minore. After this the landscape was even more impressive as the cliffs made a sheer drop into a very narrow fjord-like valley. The track had to take us right up to the head of the valley to get around the chasm and to Fiodo, the town which seemed to defy gravity by clinging to the rocks. At Sant' Elia we had an important decision. Should we take the track with steep drop offs, or choose the vertigo avoidance route? Well ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi May 8th 2017

Geo: 40.6344, 14.6026One of the surprising highlights of Amalfi was the Duomo (cathedral). The exterior, with its gold leaf decoration, caught the afternoon sun brilliantly. Inside, the 13th century Paradise Cloister had a Moorish feel with intertwined arches supported by 120 slim columns... very elegant combined with the Mediterranean garden in its centre.I nearly didn't enter the Crypt, as my previous experiences with these have been austere and solemn spaces. This was quite different - this crypt is the real heart of the Amalfi Duomo, highly decorated and revered as it is where the relics of St. Andrew are kept. The marble columns and mosaic floor, the colorful frescoes and the bronze sculptures make for a really beautiful and special place. The Amalfi locals were dressed in their very finest as we walked past the Cathedral on ... read more

Geo: 40.6344, 14.6026First up today was a walk up to the hilltop town of Ravello. But Amalfi, as with all these villages that have houses clinging to steep rock, they are an interesting exercise to navigate through. There are tiny passageways that thread between and under buildings, narrow steps winding around corners and up cliffs. If you take the correct route through this maze of alleyways, you very quickly arrive in Atrani and from then it is up and up the steps to Ravello. It seemed that we would never stop climbing the steps and the walking poles (first time I have used them) did help. Views galore as we ascended and finally got to the top. We visited two well known Ravello gardens. First up was Villa Cimbrone with its quirky statuary and inscriptions, and a ... read more

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823So the cycling has finished and now I start the walking part of the trip. Yesterday could be called a rest day as having flown from Malaga to Rome and met up with Jo, my BFF and walking buddy, we took the train down to Salerno and then the local ferry along the coast to Amalfi. This was a great way to see the sort of landscapes that we would be walking through... although it was somewhat daunting as the terrain is exceedingly steep! After docking briefly in Cetara, Maiori and Minora we arrived in Amalfi.... read more

Geo: 37.0194, -4.56288Unfortunately weather conditions prevented us riding yesterday. The wind was so strong and gusty that it was too dangerous to attempt the climb up to El Torcal so we had to go with Plan B.We shuttled up to El Torcal, a high rock formation, passing a couple of cyclists on the way.... our decision not to ride was justified as they were basically going backwards, with the wind pushing them dangerously towards the traffic. We hiked for a couple of hours through the rock formations of El Torcal, with the highlight being a point where we could see the coastline of Morocco on the horizon. Then we went off to explore the Alcazaba fortress in Antequera which was constructed by the Moors in the 14th century to counter the Christian advance from the north. Then yet ... read more

Geo: 37.0194, -4.56288Hmmm.... the ride profile today didn't look too intimidating... but there was a surprising amount of climbing... around 1,200m in 70km and the really strong headwind made it a real challenge. In one particular part of the climb we had about 500m of a tailwind so we could get our speed back up to normal and then the switchback turned and literally we all came to a grinding halt it was so strong!Nevertheless the route was mostly very scenic...although we did have our heads down a fair bit whilst battling the headwind.... I guess seeing a wind farm in one of the valleys should have given us a bit of a clue!Lunch break was in the very attractive Parque de Ardales by the embalses (reservoirs). The water was an amazing blue and it is ... read more

Geo: 36.742, -5.1664175 km of sustained effort today and my legs know all about it! Three significant climbs - two of which were around 9 km with a gradient of about 7%. But what beautiful riding - along switchback roads through the gorge and the Sierra de Grazelema National Park where I saw lots of magnificent Griffon vultures soaring above the cliffs. Helen was on a mission in the morning (she must have had an extra coffee at breakfast) as she was really strong climbing the hills. Looking good! It was very hard to get back on the bike after a pleasant lunch sitting in the sun in the plaza but it had to be done. The highlight of the afternoon were two spectacular descents - one through cork plantations and one descending down to the ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Ronda May 1st 2017

Geo: 36.742, -5.16641Woke up to a glorious blue sky with little wind. So wrapped up in a number of layers we set off with the first 5 km being a very chilly 6°C. The scenery was really pretty with wildflowers and red poppies covering the hillside. A few consistent and steady climbs took us up towards Sentinel de las Bodegas with views of a couple of pueblo blancos (white villages) in the distance. At Sentinel my legs were still feeling good so I decided to push on and do additional kms and climbing with a loop around Olvera - and cycle a portion of one of the Vuelta Espagna routes. I had a slight disagreement with my Garmin course so ended up doubling back and cycling a few extra kilometres but eventually got back on track. After ... read more

Geo: 37.3833, -5.9965During the city walking tour Mercedes led us down tiny alleyways to show us the traditional shops where the Sevilla women purchase their mantones (shawls), mantillas (headpieces) and flamenco dresses which are widely worn for festivals, special occasions and events. All were very beautiful and in high demand for the Feria de Abril which is the city's two week colourful fiesta. Today, the first day of the Feria, elegantly dressed families took part in the horse and carriage parades around the Plaza de España. No detail was overlooked with superbly groomed horses, shining carriages, and smartly dressed attendants escorting the entourage. After the formal parades, the real partying starts with eating, drinking, live music and flamenco dancing in private marquees (or casetas) until the early hours of the morning. The Plaza de España was... read more
