South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuni April 29th 2007

Arrived safe and sound in Bolivia, and now all set up for a 3 day tour of the Salar de Uyuni starting 10am tomorrow. My opinion of Bolivia so far... well it´s very different from Argentina. Straight away from the border at La Quaica-Villazon the difference was evident. An explosion of gnarly old women wearing ill-fitting bowler hats and bright ´ethnic´ garb and carrying cute smiley kids on their backs. Of course that wasn´t quite the first impression. The first impression was being kicked out of the bus on the argentinian side at 6am into a bus terminal full of locals, one of whom seemed to be throwing up everywhere. We huddled together to keep warm (unfortunately a group of unruly israelis decided to huddle up close and then use or rucksacks for a sofa) till ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta April 27th 2007

The last week has flown by since I arrived in Salta. It certainly lives up to its name ´Salta La Linda´ with a nice plaza surrounded by buildings in lovely pastel shades that would make any picture postcard photographer pout with pleasure. It´s also surrounded by nice forested mountains. The closest one has a convenient teleferico to get you up and a nice view at the top which i´ve just done. I rewarded myself with an even nicer lomito (see pic) which must surely compete in unhealthiness with anything you could get from Botley Kebabs. We(me+Lucas)´ve had a night in a cloud forest (it lived up to its name in every respect) followed by a hike in which we saw some Toucans! and got bitten alive by the Argentinian version of the midge, and also ... read more

(sorry it’s been a week since i wrote this... taken a while to get it online - more coming soon) Back on the road, and right now on a semi-cama (i.e. coach with reclinable seat for those not in the know) for the next 20 hours or so which is setting me back 150 pesos (23ukp). It’s nice - they give you meals and champagne (well at least they did in the last one,,, which was cama ejecutivo, slighty classier, so maybe they’ll skip champers) and the seats recline almost horizontal (as low as they can go without amputating legs of person behind - incidently i’m surrounded by israelis front and back - they travel in big noisy groups and keep everyone awake at hostels - why is this?). Only other problem is the aircon ... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Colonia del Sacramento April 14th 2007

Hi, Finally finally finally i´ve managed to get my email account back! So you´ll now no longer be receiving desperate pleas for money from me in Nigeria!! I only hope that no one actually fell for that.... Well as it happens this is my last full day in Buenos Aires, so I decided to go away to Uruguay if that makes sense... to a place called Colonia (3 hours by slow ferry and 50 mins by catamaran from BA). Well it sure seems like it might be a nice place - very tranquil and old worldy. Unfortunately the heavens opened today and i´m reduced to sitting in an internet cafe. I did see some incredbly large fossilised armadillo shells in a museum and did the entire spanish conquest of uruguay in 5 mins (on account that ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 2nd 2007

Sometimes I feel like I´m writing to myself on this blog, as I have only one subscriber so far! (you know who you are ) Anyway I´m now safely installed in a new and better homestay. The house is a proper apartment, by which i mean furnished nicely including the bedrooms and the woman i´m staying with is a 45+ year old accountant who is very kind and corrects my spanish all the time. Whatsmore she cooked me dinner last night too! I feel like I haven´t really made too much of my first weekend here. Mainly because the weathers been lousy and also I lost my friend- from-school´s phone number. Seeing as she was expecting me to call her about watching football (La Boca v. Nueva Chicago) on saturday, I ended up traipsing across town ... read more

Well things have run smoothly up till now (mas o menos), so it was about time something would stuff up. I find myself homeless today after an interesting bust up with ice bitch landlady of past 4 days. Well she tried to rip me off, so I felt obliged to get her back, end result she was somewhat p´d off and I decided it would be best to leave. After a lazy afternoon, i phoned a new place at the appointed time to get a room only to find out i´d misunderstood the message (i should have phoned before the time and not after the time as I´d interpreted, doh). So I can´t move in there tonight which leaves me in a nice little hostel in San Telmo, but back sharing a dorm again. Not the ... read more

Been in BA (as the locals seem to call it) for 2 days now. 2 very rainy days!! The rain started as soon as I left El Calafate in fact... a surprise - the plane went via Ushuaia on the way (well actually very out of the way) to BA - the most southerly town on the planet. I´d heard lots of good things about the place from fellow travellers so in a way it was a shame to be just passing through... however it turned out to be pouring with rain at the end of the earth (as I suspect it often does) so was actually glad to be on the plane. Well the plane journey was a fun five hours cooped up on the worst-seat-on-the-plane... a double-whammy: the seat right next to the only ... read more

Finally today is the day I fly back to Buenos Aires for my spanish course and some hard work! These last few days have actually turned out pretty fun - it´s strange how you come to know and love a place... and if you stay for more than a few days suddenly you´ll be walking down the street and be saying hello to everyone - you just get to know the faces of all the other backpackers in the same boat. Ok well, I should try to remember what happened since the glacier a few days back. One day was a rest day, hired a bike and headed out into the wilds at the back of Calafate. Climbed up a hill, found some animal skeletons and evidence of Pumas! (scary) then went to catch the Flamingoes ... read more

Hey, Just got back from my day tour to Moreno glacier. That´s truly an amazing sight. By some crazy geographical coincidence a glacier that ends within about 20m of a penisular that you can view from. And plus there´s bits of ice cracking off noisily all the time - a real photographers dream. Well it was a beautiful day out there, till the last hour when the rain came... I´m going to post some photos asap, but alas I failed to get the classic iceberg falling off the glacier shot - typical as soon as your backs turned for a second they fall,,, and then you´re there for an hour camera at the ready and nothing happens! Anyway this morning I said goodbye to my travel companions since Chalten, Ed aka the Mong from UK and ... read more

Hi Everyone! Just back from 4 days camping in Los Glaciares National Park here in Patagonia. The first thing i should say about camping for 4 nights is that that´s a heck of a lot of food to carry. And stupidly I didn´t leave any of my stuff in the base town (El Chalten) on account of not liking the hostel i stayed in the night before the outing. So there I was hiking around with about 20kg in my rucksack! And whatsmore I ate all the nice food - 2 bars chocolate, biscuits, 4 peaches, cucumber, in the first two days and was left with the horrible stuff for the last two (corned beef... surely not how i remember as a kid, tortellini that tasted of mushed potato, and mouthfuls of patagonian grit courtesy of ... read more
