Today we enjoyed our wine tour on the outskirts of the city to the south in the Pessac-Leognan area, but unfortunately no photos as I forgot to take the camera. We left the tourist office at 9.30 (15minutes late) for our first stop, Château Pape Clement, we were quite late arriving due to heavy motorway traffic but we learnt a lot about wine growing and making in the Bordeaux area both from the guide and the Chateau and were able to taste a couple of their reds. We then headed for Chateaux Couhins-Lurton but neither the guide or the driver knew the way which made us even later and the owner was not happy when we arrived. The Chateau was a beautiful building and after a brief history of the estate we sat down to a ... read more

We went into Bordeaux by bus and tram and easily found the tourist office to book a day long wine tour for tomorrow. The rest of the day was spent wandering around the old city which is quite compact enabling us to see most of the sites and have a walk over the Pont Pierre to the other side of the Garonne. It is an interesting place with many fine streets and buildings. We also managed to fit in lunch at an excellent fish restaurant recommended by the rough guide. ... read more

46 years ago, Wendy did a French exchange in Bordeaux. We drove there today, found a pleasant place to stay on the outskirts and tomorrow plan to explore the city and hopefully find the house where she lived. Then weather is surprisingly still and warm for the time of the year, enabling us to sit and eat pleasantly outside the van in the evenings. ... read more

We were late up and the spent the morning wandering around the town. It being Monday, nearly everywhere was closed. In the afternoon we did a delightful 15 mile circular bike ride of the area, following a route provided by the campsite. We passed through Cre and Bazouges, both lovely villages on the river and then went past several imposing Chateau before returning to our starting point. We managed to find a hotel that was open in the evening for a traditional French dinner. ... read more

Up early to catch the 9.30 boat to Calais. In the campervan queue to get on we met a very friendly couple who recommended a site at La Fleche which is situated just north of Anger on the Loir river (not to be confused with the Loire as I did). We headed for La Fleche and arrived at about 6.30. It’s about 280 miles from Calais.... read more

Since my last entry we have had the repairs carried out to the van (which took two months) and had two lovely weeks at Treago Farm our favourite campsite in Cornwall (the first week with Emma and Sam and the boys and the second week with the Atkinsons). During the Cornwall trip, the van developed a problem with the ABS breaking system and it has just spent a month in a Birmingham Fiat van dealer attempting to rectify the trouble without success. However, the garage assured us that the van was safe to drive and today we have started a three week trip to France with the aim to spend most of the time exploring the Dordogne area. We left Birmingham at mid afternoon and spent the night at The Camping and Caravan Club site at ... read more

For our drive to the ferry we started using minor roads which were very pleasant and quiet. By lunch time, we were just south of Troyes and realised we need to start using the motorways, which we did and arrived in Calais with enough time to enjoy a quick steak frites before catching our ferry at 9pm. We were delayed by fog in the channel and after queuing for customs (sods law, we were last off the boat) we left Dover at 10.15, arriving home at 1.45.... read more

As we were in a major wine producing area, the morning was spent visiting the local co-operative, tasting several of their wines and purchasing 20 litres to take home. Cluny is on a 100 k cycle track built on the line of an old railway between Chalone-sur-Saone and Macon. After lunch we cycled along the track for a very pleasant 10k towards Macon. The route included cycling through the 1.6km long Tunnel Du Bois Clair, which is home for a number of protected bat species and is closed in winter to protect them. On the way back the heavens opened again and we got quite wet and cold. The weather is not blessing the end of our trip! Things clear up and we spent the evening visiting Cluny, including ascending the Tower of Cheeses in ... read more

After saying our farewells to the Andersons we dropped in to see some other friends in Chatel, Ed and Liz Ockleton and their children. We showed them round the van, had a coffee, bought some Abondance cheese from one of the local farms and then started the drive home. We had been travelling for over an hour when I realised that I had taken our table out of the van during the guided tour and forgotten to replace it. So back to Chatel to collect it. Three hours after turning round we got back to where we had been and it then started to rain heavily. So we had a very unpleasant drive for the rest of the day, not helped by having to take a detour in Macon to find a supermarket to get some ... read more
