28 March 2008 I picked Wendy up from her Macular Disease Society group meeting and we drove down to Weymouth to my sister Ruth’s house for the 50th birthday of my nephew James who had flown over with his wife Bobbie from their home in Atlanta. In the evening we were joined by Steve and Jennie Whitesmith for a memorable celebratory dinner in a very good restaurant in Weymouth. ... read more

26 March 2008 Since my last entry on 22 October 2007 when we had just returned from our Autumn trip to France, the van has spent the majority of its time in the local Fiat garage having several warranty problems sorted out. At least it meant that we didn’t have to pay for storage over the winter. The vehicle was returned to us in time for a very pleasant long weekend trip to Devon and Cornwall between from 7 to 10 March 2008. On the way down we visited Wendy’s cousin Jane and her husband Philip at Clevedon just south of Bristol. We stayed overnight there at the Camping and Caravan club certified site. The next day we travelled to the Caravan Club certified site at East Prawle which is in a remote location on the ... read more

We drove from Boulogne to Calais along the coast which would have been a scenic road if it hadn’t been misty. The ferry crossing was uneventful and after lunch with Sally Hawkes, we arrived home in the early evening.... read more

Chartres has a 13th century cathedral, far larger than one would expect for a town of its size. It is one of the most impressive in France, particularly renowned for its stained glass, most of which was installed when the cathedral was built. We woke up to sub zero temperatures, the first time since we have started using the van and on this clear crisp morning walked from the campsite into the town centre along the river Eure. The cathedral was all we had expected and we were particularly moved by the singing in the Sunday masses that were taking place. We then continued our trip north and parked for the night on the quayside in Boulogne amongst about twenty other motorhomes. ... read more

After saying goodbye to Eric, Richard and Joy we started the drive home still avoiding motorways and spent the night at Chartres, a town about 60k south west of Paris. We were able to get the TV working, so watched England loose to South Africa in the final of the rugby world cup. ... read more

In the morning we went into Aubusson and had a very interesting tour around one of the factories producing hand made tapestries and carpets. They also refurbish tapestries. The work is very labour intensive with each item taking several months to complete. After lunch we drove north west along D roads through some lovely towns to meet up with Richard and Joy Atkinson and their brother-in-law Eric Clarke who were delivering furniture to his house which is situated in a remote location 10k outside L’Isle-Jourdon. We visited one of the local restaurants which is English owned for an excellent dinner. ... read more

The morning was spent completing a delightful 3.5 hour circular walk over the summit of Puy de Sancy. The walk started and finished at the bottom of the telepherique which goes up the mountain. The going was quite rough in places but Wendy managed in her usual confident style. In the afternoon we started driving east and north and after visiting the remarkable church at Orcival, spent the night outside Aubusson, a centre of tapestry making. ... read more

After over two weeks following the course of the Dordogne we finally reached its source today at the Cascade de la Dore on the slopes of Puy de Sancy, at 1885m, the highest peak in the Auvergne which is an extinct volcanic area in the Massive Central. Puy de Sancy and neighbouring Super Besse form a fairly large ski area. We stayed at Le Mont-Dore, the town below Puy de Sancy. ... read more

Another glorious warm and sunny day, when we passed our final Dordogne Chateau, visited another interesting medieval town, Beaulieu-sur- Dordogne, and drove the narrow switchback roads of the upper Dordogne gorges where the river, now a lake due to several hydroelectric schemes is hemmed in amongst steep sided, forest covered hills. We spent the night at another aire at Bort-les-Orges, which although still on the river is in the Auvergne. The aire was on the bank of the river and we noticed that its level changed from a few inches to a few feet whether or not electricity was being generated at the dam just above the town. ... read more
