We left the mountains and headed south to visit some well known sights just outside Braga. Firstly it was Santuário de Sameiro, a monument built in 1837 but altered by during Salazar’s regime. Then Bom Jesus de Monte, an ornamental stairway of 573 steps (which we climbed) leading past the stations of the cross to an impressive church all built ion the 18th century. And finally Citânia de Briteiros, a celtic hill settlement excavated by archaeologists since the late 19th century with an amazing array of perimeter walls, streets and the remains of circular dwellings. We then moved on to a site on the coast just outside Porto. ... read more

The weather was showery all day but undaunted we went on one of the walks recommended by the campsite. We needed to do a fair amount of road work but were able to experience some of the many mountain tracks in this area. We also passed through the Dom Jesus (the stations of the cross) at Quintâo and the fascinating cobbled street village of Parelas with its vine trellis covered cobbled streets and grain stores called espigueiros. In the afternoon we got lost on an overgrown path and had to retrace our steps and return to campsite via the road. ... read more

One of the reasons we chose the Morello was being a panel van conversion, we felt we could take it practically everywhere we could take a car. Today we put this to the test and it coped admirably. We started our drive by exploring the Parque Natural de Monteshino one of the remotest areas of Portugal with cobble street villages set in rolling hills. After driving west and lunch at one of the provincial towns, Chaves, we entered the Parque Nacional Da Peneda-Geres which is an altogether more daunting place with steep sided granite mountains through which wander incredible narrow roads with many hairpin bends. The most impressive was from Caldos do Gerés to Campo de Gerés where we are spending the night. ... read more

Before we left for this trip, we had a couple of weeks of sunny clear weather in England and this continued getting gradually warmer as we drove through France and into Spain. Today, when we woke up it was cloudy and cool. We quickly packed up and soon after starting to drive across northern Spain and into Portugal it started to rain and continued all day. Fortunately there were no leaks in the van. We headed for Bragança the principal town in the area which has a citadel with a complete defensive wall enclosing the adjacent buildings. We walked around the wall, church and unique thirteenth century council building in the rain. Our campsite was in the adjacent Parque Natural de Montesinho. ... read more

Our campsite is situated about 2 miles from the centre of Burgos, but there is a cycle track along the River Arlanzon, so we had an easy ride into the city and were able to park our bikes right in the centre. The highlight of Burgos is its magnificent 12th century cathedral, one of the most impressive we have ever seen. It is constructed of incredibly intricate stonework and includes several impressive stained glass windows. As well as the main nave it also has many beautiful side chapels some of which are quite large. El Cid, who was born in Burgos, is buried here. If you are ever in northern Spain you must make sure you visit this wonderful work of art. The rest of the day was spent wandering around the city and enjoying ... read more

It was market day in St-Jean so we had a walk around and bought cheese and vegetables from some of the local farmers’ stalls. Then we headed into the Pyrenees and the van crossed its first mountain pass, the Ibaneta at 1045m into Spain. Following which we drove west via Pampona and stopped for the night at Burgos, which we plan to explore tomorrow. ... read more

Fist internet access so far, but cannot publish photos and full entry. We are now at St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees. Wall to wall sunshine so far. First night at a pleasant village in Normandy, then on to St Severin in Charente to stay at L'Etang, Gary and Linda's beautiful retreat. So far everything working fine on the van, which is much admired. Today, we cross the mountains into Spain.... read more

We had a lovely sunny drive south from l’Etang on D roads to St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the foothills of the French Pyrenees. On arrival, we parked at the local municipal camp site and had a pleasant walk around the town including a visit to the citadel which played its part in defending France against the attacks of the Spanish. St-Jean has also been the traditional start of the crossing of the Pyrenees for the Pilgrims on their way to Santiago.... read more

The day started driving south on the French Motorways to Poitiers followed by a detour to visit Orador -sur-Glane. On 10 June 1944, 642 residents of this village were massacred by the S.S. and all the buildings set alight. This place is now a memorial to all those who died and the buildings have been left exactly as they were after the massacre. The visit was a very moving experience. We then headed through deepest French countryside and sleepy villages for Gary and Linda Carey’s wonderful house in St Saverin for a two night stopover. ... read more
