Europe » Spain » Castile-La Mancha » Toledo May 26th 2011

We had already been impressed by our first view of Toledo’s old town as we navigated our way around in search of our hotel yesterday. As usual this part of town is high on a hill, so today we expected to spend time climbing and getting very hot. Instead, the underground carpark entrance popped up in just the right place to access huge escalators made for tourists who have climbing fatigue after cardiovascular workouts at several historic hill towns. What a marvellous way to rise up the hill and thank you to those who made it possible. As we left the topmost escalator we picked up a map from the Information Centre and headed off to explore with a couple of particular sites in mind, knowing our euros wouldn’t stretch to going into all the possible ... read more

Rather than spending time searching for breakfast options in Villa del Rio this morning, we got straight onto the autovia and pointed the car towards Toledo, hoping to pick up supplies from a supermercado we might spot in a town near the road. Our search was successful, so with the car under shade in the carpark we were enjoying our selection when a departing car stopped and the driver called “Bon appétit!” She had spotted our French rego plates and thought we may be French, like her. We spent a few minutes talking, wished one another well, and we were on the road again. Our day’s drive was around 300 kilometres and we were constantly reminded of what a huge country Spain is. Endless vistas stretched far into the distance and then more opened up each ... read more

It’s Tuesday and we said goodbye to the Mediterranean for a week as we headed for the interior to explore Madrid and its surrounding area but first we visited Cordoba. The day was again beautifully fine with the morning sun sparkling on the sea. Doesn’t that sound romantic. We left with mixed feelings. The visits we made to Ronda and Granada were absolutely fanatastic but experiencing the tourist development of the coastline and the influx of people on budget weekend holidays will also be unforgettable. The TV programme “Benidorm” always came to mind. The drive to Cordoba was through open countryside filled with olive trees. Old rounded mountain peaks and rugged outcrops of rock interrupted the flat vastness of this landscape. Closer to Cordoba the land use changed to grain cropping. Everything around us looked hot ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada May 23rd 2011

Today was to be special: we would head inland from the Costa del Sol to visit Granada and the legendary Ahlambra. Every guidebook had stressed how unforgettable this ancient monument is, so we set off with high hopes. Once we left the coast the landscape was huge: olive groves as far as the eye could see, set against a backdrop of stunning mountains with huge peaks eroded down to bare rock. Everything about it felt old and sure of itself! A bit like us really... We cruised along on a great road and finally Granada hove into view, high enough that snow was on the mountain tops not far away. Now for the simple task of finding the Ahlambra...Unfortunately a good number of major streets were dug up for the laying of new tramlines, so navigation ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Ronda May 22nd 2011

Visiting Ronda was one of the reasons for choosing Fuengirola as a base for these three days. Ronda is situated inland so this meant a drive up and through the range of mountains that act as a backdrop to this picture postcard coastline. The drive in itself was spectacular with views around every corner but unfortunately it was punctuated by groups of oncoming motor cyclists “practising” for the next Moto-GP. The tourists heading our way were more sedate in the way they tackled the task. Added to the mix a local cycle team chose this day and this route for a practice ride. The drive into the town is like any other town, quite unspectacular with the usual industrial and commercial centres. Once the car was parked up for the afternoon in an underground car park ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Fuengirola May 21st 2011

“Where on Earth is Fuengirola?” we hear you all ask. As you drive along the Costa del Sol towards Malaga you come to the seaside resort of Fuengirola, one of many such places along the coast. There are so many that it becomes hard to tell when one ends and the next one begins. So for the next three nights we are enjoying sea views from our sixth floor mini apartment. To get here we had a very interesting drive. We said goodbye to Seville with some very happy memories. The apartment staff were really helpful and it was great to be able to fully cater for ourselves for the first time on this trip. Having a fridge made all the difference. We could have cold milk on our cereals and cold beers at the end ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville May 20th 2011

The sun was shining as we arose from a good night’s sleep so everything was looking good for a visit into the city of Seville, about 5 kilometres away. The receptionist at our apartment complex gave us some useful tips on what to see, where to eat and where to park. So after breakfast we headed off for the sights of Seville. We thought we were following the directions we had been given but there seemed to be two sets of bridges over two water crossings. We started looking for a park once we had crossed the river not the canal. After cruising a while a helpful gentleman from Nigeria pointed out a perfect parking space. His help was worth a “small” gratuity and so the car was parked up for the day and after thanking ... read more

Our only night in the Algarve was punctuated with the sound of heavy rain showers. There has been some heavy rain moving across Spain to the northeast for a few days but fortunately it hasn’t affected our plans. From pictures on the TV there have been flash floods in towns, garages needing pumping out and motorway web-cam showing a truck jack-knifing and sliding only to be hit by a following car. Without understanding Portuguese we think a bus crash was caused by the weather. We had one last quiet drive through Albufeira before heading for Seville. The area is certainly built for the influx of northern European tourists with every second hotel having the word Club in its name. We noticed some residents at our hotel sunning themselves by the pool at 9:00am between possible showers. ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Albufeira May 18th 2011

The TV promised rain today for our journey south to Albufeira in the Algarve, and kept it! Swathes of rain, sometimes almost torrential, accompanied our navigation of the non-toll route. The open plains we drove across made the huge black clouds look very threatening and at one point we looked for a place to stop and wait for the downpour to ease a bit. At the entrance to a cemetery we sat off the road while the water poured downhill around us and minor flooding on the road deepened. Before this the weather had cleared for long enough to allow us to stop for lunch and a wander around Evora, an old fortified town with Roman temple ruins at the top of the hill. The postcards we bought here show how the town looks in the ... read more

Waking up to a gloomy morning was not what we ordered but we need not have worried. It wasn’t long before the sun came out and all looked good for the day. We decided on the Metro as a way into the city and the nearest station was only about five to ten minutes away. A 24 hour ticket was our best bet as it gave us travel on metro, bus and tram. The metro looks quite new, probably had a good facelift in preparation for their Expo 98. Within 10 minutes we were in the centre of Lisbon and ready to start the day. By the number of tourists around there must have been have been some cruise ships in town. After a wander around downtown Lisbon and a chance to look down the harbour ... read more
