Italy is having an early season heatwave with temperatures above 30° for the past week and no sign of abating. So our travelling day from Assisi to Florence was going to be hot. We have had a great two days in Bastia, a town near Assisi, and our hotel was absolutely fabulous. We had great hosts who made us very welcome and we had a lot of fun chatting with them at every opportunity. Travelling to Florence we passed through the district in which we stayed for a week exactly ten years ago. So as we passed the well-remembered turn off to San Rocca a Pilli we just had to detour. All the memories came spilling back. We even noticed the little red private letter box where one of our daughters posted her post cards to ... read more

After a pleasant Italian breakfast at the hotel, made more so by our delightful host, we managed a reasonably early start on our visit to Assisi. During the 10 years since we were in Italy we have often wished we had been able to spend more time in Assisi. Today we will take time to really explore the town. Getting into an underground carpark close to the town meant that the car stayed cool and so did we, for the time being. We went into the Lower Basilica first, where we quickly realised we were in a very special place. A young woman could be seen restoring one of the screened off frescoes high above the floor. What an experience to be able to put paint onto pictures that were painted centuries ago, and what a ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Orvieto June 23rd 2011

Leaving the excitement of Roma and our Camping Village accommodation this morning , we made it onto the ring road and exited successfully at the right spot for the drive north to Bastia, near Assisi. Avoiding the toll road, we enjoyed some magnificent pastoral scenery as we made our way towards the region of Umbria. Fields of sunflowers appeared along with golden grains ready for harvest, ancient hill towns and the green of hedges and trees everywhere. Quite a sight under the hot sun and blue sky. One of our aims today was to visit Orvieto, a beautiful hill town we had passed by during our bus tour 10 years ago with just a glimpse from the autostrada. This time we were not going to miss it. From the moment we rounded a hairpin bend in ... read more

Another hot day was anticipated so we managed an early start, this time to the site of the ancient Roman port town of Ostia Antica. It was only a short drive from the holiday camp but part of the journey was along a road bordered by pine trees typical of the area. They provide great shade but unfortunately their root system meant a rollercoaster ride for a few miles. The attendant at the ticket office to the archaeological site was in a very happy mood and with discounts we entered with half price tickets. This ancient city was home to over 100,000 Romans. Today the ruins are spread over such a wide area it would take quite a number of hours to see them all. Early attempts to preserve and restore the wonderful mosaic floors had ... read more

An earlier start today had us in Rome soon after 10.00am before the real heat developed. We had a little list to get us started and found it easy to get to our first stop, the Spanish Steps. The steps were not too busy so we took the opportunity to climb and sit and take photos, as millions have done before us. After a walk through shady streets we arrived at our next stop, St Peter’s Basilica. Our approach to the Vatican was punctuated by the many touts wanting to sell tours but on we went. By now the crowds were building and the march of the tour parties was hard to avoid in and around St Peter’s Square. Our intention had been to go into St Peter’s Basilica but the queue was winding right around ... read more

Ten years ago we visited Rome while on a bus tour. Visiting Rome at that time meant touring the Vatican, seeing the Colosseum and leaving. On this trip we want to see Rome by experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of the city. From our accommodation at Camping Village Fabulous we need to take a bus to the Line B Metro. Apparently the timetable is just to keep tourists ever hopeful that a bus will be along any moment. After a thirty minute wait amidst an ever increasing queue the bus arrived and we were soon at the Metro. We chose the Circo Massimo as our first stop and a quiet wander past the Palatino to the Forum and Colosseum. Last time we were in Rome the Forum was free, not this time. How things change. ... read more

Again we woke without any sore muscles. We must be super fit people who are now ready to tackle any physical challenge. Perhaps the next one is in Switzerland when we visit the mountain town of Zermatt and the area around the Matterhorn in early July. Once again we followed camp instructions that said check out was before 10:00am and check in after 5:00pm. Trying to hand in the keys and swipe card was delayed by happy campers checking in. Frustrating for all! Finally, the blue bands were off and we were heading south. The day was going to be hot but there was a strong wind blowing. We made a brief detour to the seaside town of San Vincenzo. The tide was on its way out and the sea was very choppy and churned up ... read more

We all woke wondering what to expect from muscles and joints after our Cinque Terre trek yesterday. It was with great surprise we found we could move around with no ill-effect from the day before. Perhaps we’ll get a shock tomorrow or it was just a sign of our high level of fitness! Following camp instructions we had the car packed and ready to move out by 10:00am for our next destination, Cecina, south of Pisa. We took the scenic route through the hills that surround the five little villages of the Cinque Terre coast. The road twists and turns through forested hills before dropping down to La Spezia. The journey from that point on took us through a series of connected towns. Our boot lunch today was under an orange tree on a park bench ... read more

No lying in today! We awoke expecting brilliant sunshine but were instead greeted by an overcast sky as we prepared for the long awaited trek along the Cinque Terre trail. This weather would later turn out to be advantageous as we avoided heatstroke, dehydration and sunburn (almost). The grand plan involved catching the free shuttle to the nearest train station, then purchasing all necessary tickets to get us to Monterosso, the starting point for our walk. A word to the wise – avoid using the toilets at this train station if at all possible. No need to elaborate! We began the walk in high spirits along the easy level promenade, admiring the precision of the deck chair arrangement on the carefully groomed beach. Our pleasure was quickly subdued as we commenced the real trail up from ... read more

Today was a pretty exciting day because Catherine joined our tour party for the next seven days. We had arranged to meet her flight from London had Genoa Airport early afternoon. So we had a few hours to fill in while we waited. Our hotel accommodation the night before was in a hillside commune of Cogoleto. We enjoyed the garden setting of the hotel, especially the perfect hydrangea blooms in their beautiful blue, pink and purple shades. After a rearranging the luggage in the car to make room for our passenger we headed down to the coast. What a pleasant surprise. It was market day so we stopped and had a browse. This seemed to be the normal Thursday market for the locals and a great chance to socialise over the business of deciding on purchases. ... read more
