We had our fingers crossed for a fine day today but when the curtains were drawn back in our hotel room we were greeted with rain again. We hope our lasting impressions of Budapest are not all gloomy. These few days of our trip have been the wettest we have had over a sustained period of time. Had we seen more of the sun we might have felt differently. We leave with memories of wonderful art work, stately buildings along Andrassy ut, the pedestrian friendly streets in the city centre and the views from Buda overlooking the city. As we pack the car ready to depart for Bratislava we can hear the words of those who have travelled this way before us saying, “Why Bratislava, there is nothing there?” With a two night stay we are ... read more

Day two in Budapest dawned partly cloudy and still a little cool but no rain, so all was set for a morning visit to the Museum of Fine Arts. We were determined to follow the rules for train tickets today and aimed to even win a smile from one of the officials checking tickets. We needed to change trains on our journey and used the same ticket for the second trip as we were within the time allowed to do this. Easy – until we saw a ticket inspector heading our way on the second train! She was very unsure about the validity of our tickets and produced a tiny magnifying glass, not unlike the sort that comes in a Christmas cracker, and proceeded to examine the ticket even more closely. Finally she called for a ... read more

Our first full day in Budapest and unfortunately the local meteorologists were correct with their weather forecast – rain showers. With only two days in the city we couldn’t sit around and wait for the rain to clear so we headed off to catch a tram which would connect with the Metro into the city centre. We had chosen our hotel because of its close proximity to the tramway stop just across the road. Little did we realise that the hotel was surrounded by large apartment buildings reminiscent of the Soviet occupation up until 1991. We purchased tram tickets from the hotel receptionist who assured us they would be good for both the tram and Metro for one trip. Unfortunately the grim looking ticket inspectors at the Metro station disagreed and so extra tickets had to ... read more

Our drive today was from Pécs to Budapest, taking a slightly roundabout way in order to reach our accommodation without getting lost in the city. For those with maps handy, we drove via Kecskemét and Cegléd. Apart from an area of slightly rolling country the landscape was very flat with the main crops maize and sunflowers. The huge plain and big sky reminded us of the Canterbury Plains at home, although the road was very different to SH1 with many bumpy uneven sections and no shoulder in case of mishaps with large trucks. That’s what we get for avoiding motorways, but it all adds to the fun. As we drove, we noticed the sunflowers had developed a lean, then saw many broken tree branches scattered on the roadside; the result of what must have been a ... read more

We woke this morning to the gentle patter of rain on the skylight. The forecast said it was going to be light showers this morning and clearing this afternoon. So we planned for an easy wake up and a late breakfast hoping that the rain would be gone before we headed out to explore the historic town of Pécs. By the time we went out the rain had stopped but the sky was still threatening with large dark clouds overhead, however the temperature was comfortable in the low 20s. It was quite strange to be out sightseeing where there was a prospect of rain, something we haven’t done since leaving Barcelona about seven weeks ago. It seems that rain might follow us for the next few days. A positive out of this is the temperatures will ... read more

After a little overnight rain we woke to a beautiful clear sky. Our accommodation at the guesthouse in the hills above Samobor has been wonderful. But today we must move on as we have an appointment with the border guards on the Croatian-Hungarian border on our way to Pécs. During our travels we endeavour to stay off the toll roads for two reasons, money and boring driving, so our drive today meant taking the scenic route through the centre of Zagreb. From what we saw it was not really a city where we would spend time sightseeing. Some of the older buildings had the grim exterior of the Communist era. The trams on the other hand were very modern. Perhaps over time the general appearance of the city will become more appealing. Tito was known for ... read more

Our trip today was one of our shortest drives on this adventure. We are on our way from Croatia to Hungary and to make the journey in one day was going to be a challenge so we decided to break the journey in Samobor, a little to the west of Zagreb. Our hosts were not expecting us before 4:00pm so we took our time covering the 120km from the Plitvicka Lakes. The rolling countryside was a mixture of agriculture and forest and the traffic moved at a very sedate pace, unlike the frenetic pace of the traffic in Bosnia. Once we reached Jastrebarsko we took the scenic route to Samobor. As we were very close to the Slovenian border we expected border guards to emerge from the trees at any moment. The road twisted and turned ... read more

Today we have spent time in one of the most picturesque natural landscapes we have ever seen. In this National Park a series of lakes on different levels is linked by spectacular waterfalls. Paths and boardwalks are supplemented by electric boats and buses to help visitors get around the large area. Great efforts are made to preserve the lakes and surrounds, and many visitors from different countries come to enjoy the experience. Registration plates from all over Europe were evident in the car park today. We were pleased to have manageable temperatures today after all the recent heat and welcomed the breeze and even the occasional cloud cover. We decided to take the bus to the highest lake, where we fuelled up with a large slice of apple strudel and began to walk back down, following ... read more

Last night the tour committee had a special meeting to discuss the itinerary for today. After reading about Bosnia it was decided to alter our original plans of driving north through Croatia and instead take a route through Bosnia to our destination at the Plitvice Lakes. The first part of our drive took us north through Mostar to Jablanica. The road followed the Nevetra River through a picturesque gorge with rugged mountains all around us. The river is used for hydro electric power so there are many small lakes where the water is a brilliant green. From Jablanica we headed west through a mix of forested, agricultural and mountainous countryside. At one point we had to stop at traffic lights by some road works in the middle of nowhere. Sitting there was an almost dead gypsy ... read more

Today we fulfilled another, “must do”, visits that was on our list of places to see. It might be getting a little boring but it’s very hot again today. Perhaps this is the last time we will mention the very hot, dry weather. One day it might rain and that might be worth a mention. On our way to Mostar we called in to the nearby town, Capljina, to extract some Bosnian marks from an ATM machine. Finding a machine was one challenge and then finding one that worked was the second. On hot dry windy days these towns don’t look their best. Dust and rubbish blows around and wasteland around buildings is often left to its own devices making the town look like a wild west town surrounded by hot desert. With local currency in ... read more
