We were sad to leave beautiful Switzerland today, but adventures in mountain passes lay ahead as we set off to cross the border into northern Italy. First up, we needed to retrace our steps from Preda back over the exciting Albulapass towards St Moritz. On we went over the Bernina Pass, which provided spectacular mountain views as well as the climb up one side and the hairpin descent on the other. As we crossed the border into Italy, the Swiss border control officer stopped us to peer closely at the washing hanging above the back seat. Satisfied there was no smuggling going on, but looking quite bemused, he waved us on. His Italian counterpart had obviously seen it all before and with a nonchalant wave of the hand he welcomed us to Italy. This northern part ... read more

Today we return to Preda on the Glacier Express and will be re-united with our beloved Peugeot 207SW but before we leave Zermatt there is just one last experience to enjoy: the sun rising on the Matterhorn. To witness the sunrise and all the colour changes that go with it we woke with the alarm at 5:00am. The sky was clear except for a faint wisp of cloud that added to the theatre that was about to unfold. To see the sun strike the summit of the mountain was one more page in the highlight chapter of this book. The early wake up and standing on the roof terrace of the hotel with a chill breeze blowing was worth it. After breakfast we left the hotel for Zermatt railway station to catch the Glacier Express. We ... read more

Waking to a cloudless day could not have been better for our ascent to the perfect viewing point to see the Matterhorn. To get there we needed to travel by the cog rail Gornergrat train. What a magnificent piece of engineering to enable passengers to climb over 1400 metres in perfect comfort to view such great mountain scenery. From the top of the Gornergrat railway the Matterhorn is dominant. No one can deny its majesty and on such a perfect day the view takes your breath away. It is hard to imagine how such a mountain can be climbed. Once you get your breath back you can then take in the view of the Italian mountains that reach over 4500 metres and the dramatic glaciers down their slopes. With the 360° view you get the opportunity ... read more

Waking early in the mountains on a fine clear morning, we found a trace of ice on the car – this is July after all! Breakfast over, we made our way to the station just 3 minutes down the slope from our mountainside hotel to catch the local train to St Moritz. Swiss trains are always on time, so at 8.30am on the dot the shiny red train slid soundlessly into the little station and we were off. In the 24 hours we have been in Switzerland we have seen many clocks, large and small, and all have shown the correct time. Perhaps this is why the trains run on time. At St Moritz our seats on the Glacier Express were ready and we settled in for the ride to Zermatt and the Matterhorn. Second class ... read more

Today we said “arrivederci” to Italy and started another exciting chapter in our European Adventures. We headed north alongside Lake Como over the mountains to St Moritz and a little further to our overnight stop at Preda. Slow driving was the order of the day. Not because we wanted to drive slow just to annoy the impatient Italian drivers for the last time but because the traffic was heavy, the road was narrow and it was one little town after another. Added to all this the scenery was postcard material from the start and that meant stopping often wherever we could. Como was alive with holiday makers and that made stopping difficult so we just kept on driving. There were times when we deviated from the main road and took zig-zag roads down to little villages ... read more

After a hot and very weary day yesterday the tour committee agreed to a quiet day today and prepare for the next stage of our adventure. Tomorrow marks the halfway point in our trip and we look forward to the second part which starts with a train journey on the world famous Glacier Express. So blob we must today. While the room was serviced we went for a quiet drive to Bergamo. Last night we had our first rain for over a fortnight. As a result the murky atmosphere that had been around for the past two days had temporarily disappeared and the temperature had become more bearable. During our exploration around Bergamo we took the citté alta route to the top of the hill overlooking the rest of the city. While looking for a post ... read more

We had prepared for today by checking out the bus we would need to catch to Bergamo, a local station, in order to travel by train into Milan. All went to plan and we arrived at Milan Stazione Centrale then found our way to the underground Metro which would take us close to the gallery housing one of the most loved works of art in the world: Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. We had tried unsuccessfully to book tickets online to see this painting and were hoping to be lucky enough to get in just by turning up to the ticket office. The guide book had suggested lunchtime as the best part of the day to do this, so in we went and yes, two tickets were available for later in the day. Armed with our ... read more

Our drive today didn’t really end in Milan but in the small town of Treviolo just outside Bergamo. We chose this destination primarily for the hotel rate and it was outside Milan so took away the worry of driving in such a hectic city. To get to Treviolo we left Bologna in the direction of Padua where we hoped to see some Giotto frescos. Padua is really en route to Venice so it was a bit of a detour but the countryside was great to drive through. It was flat with vast fields of corn and maize. Driving through the town of Monselice with its fortified hill lead us to believe there were hidden sights in this part of Italy yet to be explored and one day may be worth a longer stay in the north. ... read more

Ten years ago we drove to Florence and have had nightmares ever since. Today, with the help of our on board navigator, leaving Florence in morning rush hour traffic was a breeze. We leave Florence knowing we have seen what we came to see. It was hot and beginning to get crowded but full of excitement and activity. We started our trip by heading for Forli on the eastern side of the mountain range that forms the backbone of Italy. The road zigzagged its way to the summit and down the other side. It was slow going but the scenery was great. Passing signs of “chains to be fitted” and “snow ploughs” gave a hint of what it must be like in the winter. Forli was not really our destination but just somewhere for the GPS ... read more

Oh boy! Was it hot today. We were up really early, had breakfast and boarded the bus for the centre of Florence by 8:05am. It was just as well because the day we had planned involved queuing and lots of it. Fortunately we chose the right time of the day to join the queues. Italy, Spain and the south of France are experiencing very hot temperatures caused by a large anticyclone moving across from North Africa. Our official temperature was 31° but seemed much hotter in the streets. Just as well we weren’t in Toledo, they recorded 43°! We started the day by queuing to visit the statue of David in the Galleria dell’ Accademie. After a nearly two hour wait it was our turn to enter the gallery. The sight of David as you enter ... read more
