A little food shopping before we left Pamplona was the first challenge of today. Finding a supermercado would provide us with the makings of a picnic lunch and we headed off on this quest, needing to ask for directions from a couple of early shoppers whose gestures and animated Spanish did the trick. Then time for a return to the old town part of Pamplona for a visit to the huge cathedral and to walk the route the bulls take when they run through the streets to the massive bullring. Pilgrims were everywhere, entering through the old city gate and climbing through the streets, following the distinctive markers set into the roads. Pilgrims are offered special rates for just about everything, especially entry to the cathedrals, food, and accommodation. Perhaps they have already paid large sums ... read more

We apologise in advance if this blog gets a bit garbled because we have just had the most incredible meal. We decided to eat at the hotel tonight not knowing what we were in for. The waitress couldn’t speak English and we had no idea of Spanish so we ordered from a set menu that cost 10 euros 50 each. We both took the easy road and chose seasonal vegetables (turned out to be vegetable soup) followed by fish. Both very tasty. Then came dessert – ice cream or pudding or (we weren’t sure what the third item was). The ice cream was a Nestle chocolate-coated ice cream on a stick and the pudding was like crème brulee. Included in the meal was a full bottle of wine and coffee. Now you can see why we ... read more

Today was a travelling day. We could have left everyone wondering where on earth we were and just missed this day’s blog out completely. But then you might all be worrying about our whereabouts and getting in touch with the authorities. Needless to say the day was uneventful and we made it safely to our destination. We were sad to leave Beynac as it has left us with some wonderful memories. We assured the owner we would write a positive review on the booking website. We even had some washing done for us for free. It came back neatly folded or ironed in the bag we provided. Such luxury. We decided to go with whatever Miss GPS planned for us. We were not going to have another nasty experience by ending up in the wrong part ... read more

Waking up to a gloomy morning was not in the plans at all, but then gloomy days are never planned for. On the other side of the world our twin grandsons have probably ripped into their presents as part of their first birthday celebrations and how we wish we could have been there to see all the action. Today we planned to visit Cahors, another medieval town south of Beynac, and we hoped the weather would improve. Before any of this could happen a most important date had to be made at the local hairstylist. Fortunately there was a free slot right then so one who needed a haircut was about to experience a French haircut by someone who couldn’t speak English. The one who didn’t need a cut headed off for some photo shots of ... read more

We woke to a foggy morning but the sun soon came through and it looked like another perfect day for adventure and exploration. While we are staying in this area we want to visit the pre-historic cave art. The lady at the local tourist office informed us that ticket sales are limited to 200 a day and can only be purchased at the site. So we had two plans today. Visit the ticket office and purchase tickets that best suited us then visit either Rocamadour or Cahors. On our way to the caves, which we had been told were the best because they were authentic, we stopped by the Dordogne River for a boot breakfast. It was idyllic. The river was flowing a little quicker than yesterday probably as a result of last night’s rain. On ... read more

After a long day yesterday we took the opportunity to lie around for a bit. Our intention to prepare our own meals in our room struck a bit of a hiccup when saw the room instructions; “No food preparation in the room!” We might have to work on this little problem. So we made a start on the pastries we bought the previous morning and had a banana. The evidence was smuggled out later in the morning. Being good Kiwis we’ll come up with Plan B. Nearby is the town of Sarlat which has diesel and an ATM, and we need both. Sunday in these towns is a day of rest for most businesses so took a bit of searching to get fuel. Sarlat has been declared an open air museum and you soon realise why ... read more

After a good sleep last night and having achieved success with our first day of driving we set off with confidence to a local supermarket for lots of supplies. We achieved this task without any hassle. It was now for our exciting trip to Beynac in the Dordogne Region. That combination was to be critical as the day unfolded. From the previous day’s experience the GPS likes motorways and we want to see the country so we attempted to fool it. We entered a place name on the way to Beynac but a long way from motorways. All was going well until we realised it was taking a long time to get no where. So we bit the bullet and entered Beynac into the system. We were immediately taken to a motorway and we were soon ... read more

Europe » France » Auvergne » Clermont-Ferrand April 29th 2011

Phew! We made it to Clermont-Ferrand. Yes we now have a car and are hopefully very mobile. The day started with some nervous tension just hoping all would work out because this is the first day of a four month drive around Europe. The first part was easy just catch the train to Lyon Airport. The phone call we made three days earlier to arrange a pick up seemed straight forward but it still needed a follow up call to let the car people know we were waiting. In no time at all we were whisked away to the collection place and there was our new Peugeot 207SW ready and waiting. What a lovely sight. With all the documents signed and a quick lesson on the workings of the GPS we were ready for the BIG ... read more

It’s been cloudy today but no hint of the expected rain, perhaps later or even tomorrow morning when we are going to the station to catch the Rhonexpress to pick up the car. We decided to have breakfast in today and for 4 euros 80 for as much as you could eat it was worth it. There is a group of high school students staying here (about 13-14 year olds) and their manners were left at home. They raced in to the dining area and lined up at the buffet as though we were invisible but once they were seated they became human again. Another easy day today. We think we are still getting over the Tour of Turkey and the early start on Anzac Day. We still had some bus tickets left so with careful ... read more

The sleep last night was not too bad although it was rather warm in the room. We are unable to adjust the air-conditioner because it is between seasons and has been turned off. We headed off to the station to purchase a pack of tickets for the local public transport system of bus, tram, metro and funiculaire. We found the appropriate ticket machine and started the process only to find it would not accept cash. Not to worry, some local gypsies were there to help , either by selling us “spare new” tickets or offering us help at a price. We were not born yesterday. One who shall remain nameless took a newspaper that was being offered only to find a little man running after us wanting his payment. Needless to say the paper was given ... read more
