Today we left London where people everywhere are preparing for the Royal Wedding. Street parties are being planned and the flags and bunting are going up. But before we leave there is just one last task, to get a new sim card for the phone so we are now in touch with the world (at a cost). Now for the big decision. Should we leave Northwood for Terminal 5 via London by train at some ridiculous hour and costing a vast amount of money or leave at 12:45pm by private car costing 25 pounds and get there within 30 minutes. It was a no brainer. So we said farewell to Joanne, assuring her we would be back at the end of August, and we were on our way. The rest of the journey was very straight ... read more

Today is Catherine’s birthday. It was great to be here in London to help her celebrate it, but our first engagement is 9:00am at Westminster Abbey. It was an early start to get to Westminster Abbey soon after 8:00am to find the best seat so alarms were set for 5:15am. We had a taxi booked for 6:15am to catch a train at 6:33am into Victoria Station. Catherine left her bags there to be picked up later in the day. Next it was a train to Westminster to arrive close to 8:00am. We had great seats in The Nave next to the person who had the responsibility of handing a wreath to John Key, Prime Minister of New Zealand. The service was quite memorable. The performance by Christchurch’s Linwood High School orchestra before the service was a ... read more

Today is my sister’s birthday and we had to celebrate it here in London while her husband probably had some wonderful surprises planned for the day in Tauranga. The day started slowly with a quiet breakfast and then a ramble through the local woods. What a wonderful sight, seeing the bluebells out and the oak trees with their new foliage. Holly the dog enjoyed the ramble as did the rest of us. The area around the woods was a very nice residential area with every house having its special name and several cars in the driveway or triple garage. Lunch was going to be late and would also be an early dinner. Joanne and Paul prepared a wonderful leg of lamb meal with roast potatoes and all the trimmings to help celebrate Easter and Catherine’s birthday ... read more

After another good night sleep we were up, out of bed and ready to do final packing for our flight to London. The last two and a half weeks in Turkey have been a fabulous experience. We have seen such wonderful sights and met many friendly locals. The school children were always ready to find out where we came from and wanted to try out their English. Every time we tried out our few Turkish words the locals beamed and helped with pronunciation. The traffic was chaotic but everyone seemed to know who was doing what and the only accident we witnessed was on the motorway coming into Istanbul a few days earlier when a small van rolled. We decided to have the hotel breakfast today. It consisted of tomato, cucumber, local cheese, olives, boiled egg, ... read more

On this our final day in Istanbul we had hoped for a fine and pleasantly warm spring day. No such luck. The sun was out but a cold wind was coming off the water, just for us. Perhaps we should have taken a Bosphorus Cruise yesterday but then we thought today was going to be better. Oh well not to worry, so off we went on our final adventures. After resisting/ignoring many men in suits offering us the finest cruise in Turkey we headed for the one and a half hour cruise for 10 lira. Today we are being very frugal because we don’t want to get any more lira from the machines as they are worthless outside Turkey. The boat left on time with just a few passengers. In spite of the wind, sick bags ... read more

Blue sky today, what a great sight. It is a bit cool; back home we would say autumnal, but it won’t deter us from our planned adventures for the day. We breakfasted out, price wise not a good move, but the omelettes were very nice. Once we had full stomachs we were ready for our first visit; the Basilica Cistern, not far from our hotel so it was an easy walk. We seem to run the gauntlet of the carpet shops everywhere in Turkey. This time we stopped over the road from a carpet cafe and commented about the risk you would take when entering the cafe. We didn’t need to enter the cafe because the owner crossed the road and offered to show us the finest carpets in all of Turkey. Once he knew we ... read more

Well, after a great sleep in we had a late breakfast, packed up the bags and hopped into a taxi to our next Istanbul hotel – a significant downgrade!! The taxi driver consulted several passing pedestrians in his efforts to locate the elusive Samil Hotel in the old town, with little success. His driving would not have been out of place in a car rally but then that’s how most driving is done here. Missing collisions with other vehicles is a very close thing and horn tooting is constant as drivers manoeuvre vehicles through very tight (or non-existent) spaces. Eventually we were delivered as close to the hotel as possible and in the rain we managed to pull our bags through and around missing bits of pavement and mud puddles to arrive somewhat breathless at said ... read more

Today was our last travel day and we are now back in Istanbul having almost completed our “Glories of Turkey Tour”. Tomorrow we say goodbye to new acquaintances and finish this adventure on our own for a further three days. It was an early start with the alarm going off at 5:30am, hotel wake-up call at 6:00am (just in case), bags out at 6:30am, breakfast, and on the bus at 7:30am. This was to be our last regimented start to the day. The early morning sky looked promising with the sun breaking through the early morning fog. The readings at the hotel said it felt like one degree outside so this was going to be a cold one. Ankara is over 1000 metres above sea level so we should have expected a cool morning. The drive ... read more

After the adventures of the past few days in the Cappadocia region today was really a travel day to get us to Ankara. It was Chris’ birthday today and what a great place to spend it. Travelling in Turkey has been just as we expected and to celebrate a birthday in Ankara just tops it off. The day started out cloudy but soon turned into drizzle, then rain. We passed more open plains with grain crops well advanced and shepherds looking after their sheep. Men were ploughing fields either with tractors or horse and women digging smaller plots by shovel. Everyone comments how men seem to be everywhere, drinking coffee or tea, smoking, and talking around tables outside coffee shops. Where are the women? We assume at home working. The highway for most of the way ... read more

This has been a day to explore more of the Cappadocia region before a second night at our present hotel, so no need to pack up the bags this morning – quite a treat. We moved around several different sites, all with the distinctive ‘fairy chimney’ houses. At one spot we climbed a stair/ladder to the Moulin Rouge Cafe inside the rock formations. Turkish carpets and kilims covered the floor, walls, and low seating. Friendly young Turks wanted us in their photos and we all tried to communicate with the little language we had in common. Back outside, a suave and welcoming man was waiting to show us through his tiny neighbouring jewellery shop! Time to go back to the bus, we decided. At each stopping place many stalls, often selling the same ranges of colourful ... read more
