Off to Limerick, again with a couple of our fellow guests at the Castle, this time two women whose husbands were off golfing. Mike wanted to see the Frank McCourt Museum (http://www.frankmccourtmuseum.com/) and a bit of Limerick so we set out. We put "Limerick Visitor's Center" into the GPS and were taken/directed to just that--the Visitor's Center. For Limerick University. We went into the Student Union type building, met some lovely students, found out some basic information about the University (at least enough for Susan to deduct the whole trip as 'business-related', haha!) and directions to the Visitor's Center downtown. Re-directed the GPS and tried again. Found the garage at the Quay, just as the helpful student had said. The garage was a bit of an adventure as it climbed very tightly up and up. Walked ... read more

The two spots Mike wanted to go in Ireland were the Waterford factory and the Frank McCourt Museum in Limerick (see that entry in a couple of days). An Irish native, living in Virginia, who returns at least annually, said Waterford/Midleton (Jameston distillery)/Cork would be a nice day. So, a tour was arranged that would include Waterford, Midleton, and Cork; ten of us were on the tour. Michael was our driver, very nice young man and very flexible about times and places. We went straight to Waterford and got tickets for a tour. Mike and I took the time that was open before the tour and ran down to the waterfront and went up in Reginald's Tower. We had seen it on the Castles series on BBC and it's one of the earliest, originally built by ... read more

Up and out at 8:30 with another couple in tow, heading for Kilkenny. Made it through the roundabouts, into the city, and caught a parking space on the street right next to the castle! The Castle has three of its original four towers still intact, as well as a beautiful rose garden. The contents were all auctioned off when the Butlers went bankrupt so the OPM have found items "of the times". During excavations, some original wallpapers and fabrics were found and replicated. Then, walked through town to St. Canice Cathedral--lovely medieval city--pubs and shops. Got a great idea for a sweater. The cathedral included the ancient chair used to anoint bishops of the parish, of whichever religion, currently Anglican. Then there was the Tower--seven sets of acutely angled steps with a tight landing at each. ... read more

We had reserved catered breakfast for Sunday morning—John and Teresa, owners, will cater dinner or breakfast if you reserve it in advance. One portion of the group had reserved dinner Saturday evening and all of us had agreed on breakfast Sunday morning. It was excellent—great tea, especially! To get started on the touring, we went to Cahir, to the Castle, after 11:30 mass—no music, none of this singing and messing about. Good, thoughtful Homily and out of there in 30 minutes. Lovely church, beautiful windows. Mike and I arrived fairly early (faster walk into town than we expected), took a seat and looked at the beautiful surroundings. A few people arrived here and there and about 11:27, with a 'whoosh' (figuratively), the church filled with people. Drove to the town of Cahir, thinking to see the ... read more

So that Mike could see the countryside on the trip south, we took the train from Dublin. We had originally thought to alight at Limerick Junction, the closest stop to Bansha Castle, and rent a car in Tipperary, a short cab ride from the train station. However, a couple of weeks before our trip, Enterprise bought the local car rental company, Dooley, and closed the office in Tipperary! Luckily, we figured this out ahead of time, even before we'd purchased our train tickets. One of the other people staying at the Castle did not learn of this until she tried to pick up her car there! She ended up getting a ride to Shannon Airport and renting a car there. So, we had purchased train tickets to Cork and reserved a car at Hertz in Cork. ... read more

Flight from Dulles to Dublin was good--great attendants, good food, little turbulence. Sat on the tarmac about 45 minutes before takeoff but otherwise uneventful. Aer Lingus did a great job. Got our stamp and our luggage! We had a Dublin Pass for the day which included bus into the city for which Mike was very grateful, especially after seeing the construction mess in Center City. About 4 million people in Ireland and over a quarter of them live in Dublin. Large, old, crowded city. Thousand year old streets and buildings are rarely even or wide and don't have elevators. Found our way to Trinity College, where we had reservations to stay the night, stored our luggage and set out to discover Dublin. Took us a few tries to get off campus as it's a gated walled ... read more

Well, we've been planning this for about a year and three weeks, we'll be off for a week in Ireland, staying in Bansha (www.banshacastle.com), then to Isle of Man (www.knockaloebegfarm.com) for four nights. Just setting this up so I can save pictures and memories as before! You're 'subscribed' to get updates from this blog--let me know if you don't want to be on the list.... read more

Hillary, two of her friends, and I went to Washington DC to join in the Women's March. It was a wonderful experience!! 500,000 of our 'friends' participated with NO violence. There were numerous speakers and far too many people to actually 'march' to the White House but we did anyway. I was very intrigued by the originality and wit of some of the signs, especially the home-made ones. I've been trying to figure out where to 'save' them and it finally struck me that this is the place, especially since I can add comments. So that's what I'll work on over the next few days.... read more

So after we spent Thursday shopping, we spent Thursday evening putting it all away or together! Hillary packed meat in meal serving sizes and labeled it all and got it in the freezer, David put things together, and Susan sat on the roof with the dog (no, not again this time!) Actually got chairs!!! So the patio was available to sit and chat, until a train went by. David put the kitchen table and bathroom storage unit together and we made a list for Friday, mainly of the number of anchor bolts needed! Called it quits about 1 with lots done, after having opened the last box--didn't necessarily get its contents dealt with but it's open! Friday, I walked down Pine st and got breakfast and David went and got anchors etc. Got the curtain rod ... read more

Well, we took some boxes from the apt to the storage unit but brought more back to the apartment--and David organized the storage unit too. Actually found two boxes of clothes for David!! Now, to find space in the closet... Followed that with a trip to cheesecake factory for lunch--thank goodness I bought a lunch size salad! Than back to IKEA for kitchen/dining table, accent pillows, curtain and rod for the divider, and skinny cupboard for the bathroom. Then to Costco for meat, soaps, toilet paper, etc. then home to unpack, put furniture together! Full day. One more for me--want to finish a couple specific things--curtain, kitchen pots and wall hangings. Shaping up!... read more
