Taking the train to NYC, Penn Station, tomorrow. Spending the night in Richmond, rather than getting up at 4 and driving down. Mike picked the closest hotel to the Amtrak station and we drove over to see where to park and how to pay so we don't have an interesting discussion at 6 tomorrow morning! Hotel also comes with breakfast so that should be nice. Had dinner at a great strip mall Italian restaurant (actually, decent size once you got into it)--great bruschetta, good service, very pleasant dinner. Mike wants to write a book reviewing "strip mall Italian restaurants", which would be fun. Off to another adventure!... read more

So, Mike wants to see Brooklyn--it's in all the good stories, everyone cool is from there, etc. We signed up for a Road Scholar bike tour and started practicing riding, as we have to be able to ride 12-15 miles per day. We can do that. Made train reservations to get us there, bought padded underwear and gloves, made a reservation for the dog at the kennel and hopefully are ready to do this!... read more

Got up with plenty of time. Went to The Buttery for a nice leisurely breakfast. Since it was a Thursday (not Saturday and end of exams, like last week), there were a number of conference-attendees there, very different crowd. Bus to airport, no problem (sounding like pros with the Dublin transport?--NO!). Picked up luggage. Then the fun began. The 'automated' check in stations were interesting, as they had been on our way to IOM. The first one we chose had a broken printer, I was told part way through. Moved to another. Somehow, we got our passports scanned, boarding passes printed, and luggage weighed and tags printed and (thanks, Mike) attached correctly. Then, you put them on the conveyor belt that weighs them again (so, no sneaking more skeins of yarn in at the last minute) ... read more

Phil arrived quite promptly, loaded us up and took us to the airport. Lovely ride, with more news from Phil--he'll be heading to Thailand in a few days (where he had lived for several years) to divest himself of a business he'd owned there! Had plenty of time at the IOM airport to eat the delicious meal Fiona had packed us (since we were leaving before breakfast time) and find a way to spend our last British pounds. Flight back to Dublin was lovely. Since we're flying back to the US tomorrow, we really didn't want to cart all our luggage into Dublin (especially anticipating another 4 floors up at Trinity...) but since we weren't ticketed through, they couldn't check it all in from IOM. When we got to Dublin, we began asking first chance we ... read more

Can't believe this will already be our last full day on the Isle of Man. It's been so beautiful. Relaxing. Comfortable. Friendly. Pretty. Mike did not want to ride another train. Good thing, there are no more to ride!! We left the Farm thinking we'd go to Peel, maybe take the bus to Ramsey and another up farther north. Maybe take a bus south on the west coast. Definitely will follow a walking path in the Farm guidebook that goes up from the farm then along the wall on the hillside, down to Peel near the Castle. Shorter too. Well, it would have been if we'd been smarter. The first part was great and we were looking forward to "sit on the bench and have a rest and look around". Then we got to another one ... read more

Another great breakfast, another lovely walk into Peel (on the correct paths); this time took the bus to Ramsey, mostly along the coast, seeing another part of the Isle on the way north. Map (https://www.gov.im/media/1347429/isle-of-man-bus-map.pdf) Peel is on the West side of the Isle, on the coast. Douglas is pretty much a 9-mile drive East of Peel, on the other coast. Ramsey is North of Douglas, along the east coast. Yesterday, we took a steam train south from Douglas, along the coast, to the south. Today, we took the bus north east from Peel to Ramsey, not quite the northern tip, then an electric train south along the East coast, stopping at Laxey to take another electric train westish up to the highest point on the Isle, Snaefell, then back down to Laxey and the rest ... read more

Slept great, despite the sheep (haha). No rooster but the sun rose about 5 to a gorgeous morning. Our first breakfast at the B&B--there was a menu of sorts we completed the night before, checking off how much of which items we wanted. In addition to bacon and a farm-fresh egg, I ordered the croissant and boy, was Mike jealous. Piping hot, soft, flaky, topped off with home-made marmalade--yummy!! His kipper was quite good; he ate it like a pro. Company at breakfast was pleasant. A couple others got a soft-boiled egg, just like in BBC shows, served in an egg holder. One of the eggs was blue and the hostess, Fiona, was quite proud of it; she bred the chickens specially for that. As they were going to church in Peel, the hosts gave us ... read more

As I said at the end of the last entry, the taxi was prompt and it wasn't 15 minutes to the airport. We had watched the planes taking off the evening before, from an outside seat near the Footgolf field; such a gorgeous evening! We were at the airport in plenty of time for Mike to get a full Irish breakfast. After doing battle with the self-serve baggage checking and boarding pass kiosk, only to learn that it was not working properly, a kindly Aer Lingus employee helped us. Had to move some yarn from one bag to another to get the weight correct and I'd forgotten that we could have 'checked' the luggage in earlier (online) and saved some of the fee. Of course, we were on a small flight so had to walk forever ... read more

Travel day--we managed to drive to Cork and return the rental car with no major incidents. Did stop to fill up the gas tank and were bowled over by the quality of the gas station's offerings--hot and cold ready food, good-sized eating area, lovely set up. Had a bit of wait for the train but that was better than being late! Got our reserved seats with our names in lights, and had a great ride back north to Dublin. Some entertaining women had been to a concert the night before (the Elvis of the UK) and sounded like they had a good time. Our flight to Isle of Man was reserved for early the next morning. The airport is 40+ minutes outside of the city so the choice was long ride Friday evening or Saturday morning; ... read more

Again, today, chartered a driver for six of us to go to the Cliffs of Mohrer (https://www.cliffsofmoher.ie/) which, we learned while there, ARE the Cliffs of Insanity (if you don't get that reference, woe to you). Also, in Harry Potter, the horcrux in the cave was filmed at the Cliffs. Ireland's most famous natural site, they are tremendous! It was not the clearest day but we certainly could get up the hill and see the cliffs and a good ways out to sea. The ranger said the winds were 35-40 miles per hour and that was about average--it was hard to walk at several points. There's a nice visitor's center with a short film, dedicated to the wildlife around the Cliffs. Mike and I walked up to the right, to O'Brien's Tower (of course, Susan headed ... read more
