Well, the guys arrived with the truck. Barely made it into the loading dock, had to walk through a maze to get up here but brought it all up and put the bed together. South wall completed

Kind of lazy day for me--Hill had training at the new job, David had a last form to deliver to his school. He also rented a drill (since his tools wont be here till tomorrow) so he could put up the TV mount. I walked to the post office to mail Hill's work keys back to Bluffton, stopped by st James cathedral, and subway. Leo and I spent almost two hours up on the roof, reading (me) and chasing little lizards (Leo). Nice breeze!... read more

Up on the roof

Flew from Charlottesville to Orlando on Saturday the 8th. Good flights despite predicted thunderstorms up and down the east coast. Spent Sunday painting the two walls in the apartment then went shopping at IKEA--a new experience for me! Their goods won't be here till Wednesday but we can still get the curtain picked out, the tv mounted, and patio furniture.... read more

Living room

Well, we had decided to do something about the sorry condition of the living room carpet. We decided on wood flooring. We went to Lowe's and picked it out, signed up for them to do the labor--moving the furniture around the house, tearing up and disposing of the carpet, etc. Took forever for them to get enough of the flooring (standard stuff, not a special order) from the warehouse to the store to our house. Finally got that delivered. Made an appointment for the installers to come. However, when they did, they measured the 'moisture level' and declared it to be too high for them to be able to lay the flooring. Seems the combination of dog 'accidents' and over-shampooing to make up for it (we thought) caused the flooring to be wet. SO, Mike ended ... read more

Making headway in the apt

Had a lovely Sunday with the girls and friends--grocery shopping in the morning, lunch in Savannah on the river front, then took in a Sand Gnats baseball game. Moved a couple more boxes from Hill's to Al's. Al's apartment looks west and it's very hot and bright in the evening on her porch. learned that the hard way last evening! Monday morning, Hillary gave her two-week notice at work--had a couple great interviews on Friday in Orlando and will probably have to decide between offers. Had lunch with the girls and went to Hill's to vaccuum the steps up to Al's room--covered in Leo hair!... read more

NC rest stop

Drove down to Bluffton on Friday. Thankfully, uneventful ride. Stopped at every rest stop and Big League Hot Dogs in Mooresville NC for quick lunch. Went strait to outlet center to allisons workplaceand got key to house and instructions to help! Washing clothes and packinthrone bathroom seemed to be the needs. Hillary was still at interviews in Orlando so I set to work. Saturday was gorgeous day and not too hot. I had broughtbagels from Mr J's in Harrisonburg which everyone enjoyed. Monday, July 4—trip home Fairly uneventful morning. Three of the group, the Chesters and Tristin, went to another market where he finally got his chess set for 50 yuan! We had breakfast, then I washed my hair and Drew braided it for me for the trip home. Left the hotel at 11:30, returned near the Bund for a good last lunch, then headed to the airport. Got on the plane on time but sat for about an hour at the gate before we took off. The flight left Shanghai at 4 p.m., Monday July 4 and landed in Chicago at 5 p.m., Monday, July 4! Saturday, July 3 Today we took a day trip to Suzhou. Vickie talked for about an hour on the way! Interesting but I don't know how she did it. Suzhou is about 1.5 hours away from Shanghai. Go out of Shanghai then on inter-provincial highway through Zangkou Province. “Paradise on earth” Suzhou and Hangzhou. Shanghai is the shopping paradise. Suzhou is historical, one of the 3 with the longest history (Beijing and Xi’An). Shanghai is only about 300 years worth; Suzhou was established 2500 years ago, during the Spring & Autumn period, along the Yangtze. Chu is on the upper river, Wu and Yue on the lower river. Wu is now Suzhou. Wu culture one of the most influential especailly after the Song Dynasty. Always a place for the literati to settle. Suzhou is close to ... read more
