Geo: 45.6625, -110.56After traveling along I90 in Montana, we had to make a major detour for about 40 minutes due to road work. We meandered around some back roads and I still don't know what town we ended up re-entering the interstate from. We stopped in Billings at a Walmart so that Naomi could get another sketch pad. She had finally filled up her old one. We also stopped for a late lunch at a Del Taco! I love Del Taco! We then headed back on the road.... read more

Geo: 45.5653, -107.429We stopped at the Bighorn Battlefield. The amount of grasses and wildflowers were so abundant that one could not see all the tombstone markers. We looked inside a couple of Native American shops. One of the shops had items made to look like Native American designs but were actually made in China! We headed back to the interstate for the long haul to Gardiner, MT.... read more

Geo: 44.0812, -103.231I let us sleep in until 6 am since we had been up early for the past few mornings. We headed back north along Hwy 16 to Rapid City. On the way to Keystone we saw statues on some of the city's corners, so we decided to stop and investigate on the way back. The city has a project of placing life-size bronze statues of each of the past presidents. They currently have 39. So Naomi and I were able to get pics of a few of them.... read more

Geo: 43.7667, -103.598We got to the Crazy Horse Memorial and ate at the restaurant. I had a chicken quesadilla while Naomi tried the buffalo burger. After eating, we walked around and looked at some of the local artists art work. Naomi developed an upset stomach, so we didn't hang out too long, but we did see what was important. ... read more

Geo: 43.8967, -103.418We then headed to the hotel. We stayed at the Washington Inn in Keystone. The room was very comfortable, but the parking was poor. Naomi stayed in the room while I walked the shops and stores. I picked up a few trinkets including a Raku bear for Naomi. I got back to the hotel and settled in for the night. Dan and Jennifer were vacationing in Las Vegas, and I got a text message from Dan about 11:30. I wished him well but let him know that we were trying to sleep.... read more

Geo: 43.4317, -103.474After leaving the cave, we then headed to Hot Springs, SD. The Mammoth Site has one of the largest concentrations of Columbian mammoth bones discovered to date. It is also the nly in-situ (left-as-found) site for mammoth bones in America. After driving for about an hour through very scenic rolling hills, we arrived at the Mammoth Site complex. After watching a short video were took a guided tour of the site. The bones are still being excavated, so we were able to watch the archeologists work. Naomi and I both loved it. Its nice to be able to share my love of fossils with someone! We left there and headed to the Crazy Horse Memorial. ... read more

Geo: 43.8967, -103.418We then decided to go caving at Rushmore Cave. According to the AAA guide book, the tour of the cave "offers a moderately easy half-mile guided tour." But when we entered the cave, a sign on the wall said it would be a strenuous walk. We had only gone into the main entrance of the cave, when it narrowed greatly. Being claustrophobic even in a crowded movie theatre, I decided that I would not be up to the challenge of exploring the cave with Naomi. I told her to go on without me and that I would wait for her later. I got my money back, and went to take a short nap in the car. About an hour later she appeared back at the car. She said that it was a very good ... read more

Geo: 43.8967, -103.418After leaving Bear Country, USA we visited the National Presidential Wax Museum in Keystone. The place was interesting, but not well organized. Some of the scenes featured historical scenes involving the presidents, but some presidents were grouped with other presidents that were from later eras, like Ford with a group of presidents from the 1800's. Also, some presidents just had head and shoulder casts. Also, there were some scenes of non-presidential historical figures like Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell. ... read more
