It was a slow and tricky drive up to Dorrigo in the morning but we managed to get to the Rainforest Visitor Centre before it officially opened. That was OK because we could still access the skywalk and the rainforest walks. Not too many birds to see but we could hear the whipbird regularly with its distinctive call. We walked to a lovely little picnic spot in a clearing called the Glade and it was full of birds. We spent a while chasing the birds around as some of them we had not seen previously. We had the place to ourselves. We had intended to eat at the park cafe but it had just opened and the staff didn't seem very interested so we pushed on to the town of Dorrigo where we had a fantastic ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Coffs Harbour September 13th 2015

An early start was required so that we could drive to the rally spectating location in the forest (not far from Coffs Harbour). In this instance, the parking was on a hill in a farmers paddock and then all of the spectators were shuttled by bus to the spectator point. We had to carry chairs, camera gear and lunch so it was a bit squeezy on the bus. The location we had selected was Flooded Gums which had a number of advantages; there were multiple viewing areas, spectator facilities were good (food, toilets etc), the final power stage was to be run on this course and it was quite close to our caravan park. There was a minor delay with our shuttle bus as a tourist / spectator somehow managed to drive on to the road ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Coffs Harbour September 12th 2015

Today was a "rest" day at home because we had agreed that we would spend the whole of tomorrow spectating at the rally. This would involve an early start and lots of walking to different viewing areas. We decided to have a leisurely start by going to the local shopping centre and having breakfast and then trying our hand at standup paddleboarding. Georgi (the lightweight) took to the paddleboard like a duck to water, but Lenny found balancing on the board a little more difficult. We had hoped to hire the paddleboard on a rising tide but somehow our booking got confused and, in some places, we had just enough water to float along. Still. it was good fun (but not as much fun as kayaking).... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Coffs Harbour September 11th 2015

The coincidence that we were in the Coffs Harbour area when the premier rally event on the Australian calendar was being held had to be taken advantage of. The start of the event (World Rally Championship - Australian round) was on Lenny's birthday so it seemed feasible that we would take in some of the action while we were in Coffs. And so, we went to the service park (where the cars are maintained and / or repaired during the event). Rally cars need to have tyres replaced twice a day or more so there is always something happening when the cars come in for service. Of course, rallying is a high speed game and things can go wrong. One of the international teams had already pulled out of the event after a head-on collision with ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Yamba September 10th 2015

Yamba was voted the best town in Oz in 2009 by Australian Traveller Magazine. We thought we would check it out on the way south. First of all though were birthday wishes from the family and a surprise cake. We had breakfast and then birthday cake. On the way to Yamba, we stopped at a rest area and had coffee and out came the carrot cake again. It tasted excellent. We arrived in Yamba about lunchtime and decided a walk around the beach to the shops would be in order. Our caravan park was close to the beach and breakwater (like Ballina) and we had a lovely walk looking at the yachts that were moored, and the birds before we got to the beach. Yamba has a few small cliffs to walk around, but eventually we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Ballina September 9th 2015

We had a few things to do and Ballina seemed to have all the answers so we stayed an extra day. We did some food shopping, organised some bike repairs and looked for clothes (but without luck). Lunch at the local restaurant was disappointing as our meals were far too salty. Seems to be a more common theme lately. Our caravan park was close to the beach so we walked along the river and out to the breakwater to watch the surfers tackle the waves. The caravan park also had lots of facilities to keep the campers amused (including putt putt golf). A tournament was quickly organised, with Lenny taking the gross score but Georgi winning the nett score and trophy. The handicapper took notice of how well Georgi played.... read more

We drove over the river (into NSW) looking for a place to have coffee and finally, we spied a coffee vendor outside a shopping centre just as we were driving out of Tweed Heads. He had great coffee and a selection of roasted nuts for just $2. Yum. As we drove down the motorway sipping on our coffee, police cars kept flashing by with sirens going. We counted seven!! We had planned to bypass Byron but Georgi was keen to have a look and there was a lot of roadworks happening so it seemed like a good idea to have a break. Byron is a wonderful place (geographically) but there are far too many rules - there are dictatorial toilets (they sing and then say you must finish in ten minutes or the door will open!) ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Gold Coast September 7th 2015

It was a quiet few days at Kirra where we caught up on chores (including some travel blogging) and did some shopping. Monday was a little more exciting as we had a new awning installed on the bus. The original one was on its last legs. The installers were just down the road, had all the parts and could get the job done within our timeframe. We had a few nice walks along the beach front and had coffee and lunch at the high rise supermarket / cinema / shops / residential apartment building. Everything within a five minute walk. We packed up and got ready to "go interstate".... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Currumbin September 5th 2015

We got to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary early so that we could get photos of Georgi feeding the lorikeets. Not so many this time (previously I have seen hundreds) but the birds still enjoyed being fed nectar and water from the dish held by Georgi. We then moved on to a quick tour of the site spending lots of time in the walk through aviaries and with the more special animals. We were particularly keen to see the cassowaries at Currumbin (given that we had looked without success in FNQ). However, Currumbin only had two cassowaries and one had been sent away (possibly for breeding) so there was only one sad looking cassowary in the enclosure. We didn't even take a photo it looked so sad. There are now only about 1,000 of these birds left ... read more

We had another shower in the "best ablutions in all of Australia" and headed off to Kirra (which is close to the Qld / NSW border). It is also next to the Gold Coast airport and close to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The southern end of the Gold Coast always looks nice with the Norfolk Island pine trees and it has just a few sections where the high rise apartments dominate the skyline. We settled in to the caravan park and ordered a new awning (the old one was on its last legs). We arranged to have it installed on Monday next so we had to extend our stay at Kirra. We took a walk on the beach and remarked about the lovely views from the low rise apartments and wouldn't it be nice to own one ... read more
