This morning was once again rain. You think we'd be used to it by now! Oh well, we headed down to the Port Douglas markets. Unfortunately because of the rain lots of stalls decided not to set up. There were still a few there to have a look at. Saw some pretty cool things. One man was there making sugar cane juice because there is sooooo much sugar cane in this area and down the east coast. Mom ended up buying herself a little something from one stall that uses wood from the rainforest. Well, it started to really pour and we didn't bring our umbrellas so I threw my rain jacket on and made a mad dash for the car to get the umbrellas for mom and dad. Dad ended up buying a boomerang from ... read more

We were up early this morning and no surprise here....rain again. But according to the weather reports today and tomorrow are the best days to go out as the knots were only 10-15 today out on the water. Quite a few people from our hotel were also going out on the same boat. A big bus came and picked us up and took us down to the harbour. We were on quite a big boat called the Quicksilver. A photographer took our picture before boarding the boat. We got settled and I grabbed an anti-seasickness tablet just incase. We got free tea, coffee and biscuits before the boat took off. We got to our first snorkeling stop after about an hour. We chose this company because they go to the outer edge of the great barrier ... read more

Well, once again we woke up to rain but we weren't going to let that stop us. We piled into the car and headed on our way further north. We encountered some water on the road from all the rain in the area and hoped it wasn't a sign to come that the roads were flooded and we'd have to turn around. We continued on our way and by the time we got to the ferry terminal where you have to take a barge ferry across the river to get up into the Daintree/Cape trib area the rain was pouring down. The lady informed us that she hadn't heard anything about flooded roads and the ferry was still operating. So, we crossed the big brown river and continued on our way. The rain would let up ... read more

Well, we woke up to rain but decided we had to venture out anyways. We headed down to Kuranda. It's a small town in the rainforest area. There is a train and a cablecar that go through the area. On our way out we encounter stopped traffic on the road yet again. We were stuck there for 30 - 45 minutes because you guessed it...a tree fell on the road again. The rain wasn't letting up and we found out the train wasn't running that day due to the weather. The cablecar was running but we decided against it as we couldn't see much anyways with the low cloud. Kuranda does have some markets so we decided to go and check those out. They are very much hippie markets. Heaps of things from Thailand and SE ... read more

We caught our airport shuttle bus early in the morning up to Cairns. We were off to do our big east coast adventure! We left a mild weathered Melbourne and it was like stepping off the plane in Thailand in Cairns. The humidity just hit you straight away. We picked up our bags and got our rental car. We decided with the 3 of us it worked out better having a car and driving ourselves down to Sydney. Dad drove us into Cairns for a quick lunch and then down to the waterfront. Cairns has a free lagoon pool right on the waterfront that you can swim in. We put our feet in and it was awesome! The water was the perfect temperature. We didn't have time to go swimming unfortunately. We walked down the boardwalk ... read more

We were up bright and early for our winery day tour. A small bus came to pick us up and then headed into the city for the rest of the pickups. We had a full bus of about 24 people. We drove out of Melbourne and into the Yarra Valley known for it's wineries. Our first stop was at Yerring Farm, a small boutique winery. We were given instructions on how to properly critique the wine, swirling the glass, sniffing it all that fun stuff. Then we got to the best part, tasting! They had a bar set up with all kinds of wines to try and we could try as many as we wanted. They had a sweet chardonnay dessert wine that was my favorite. I think I tried like 10 different wines there. Next ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Melbourne » CBD February 21st 2011

I played tour guide to mom and dad today and took them into the CBD (central business district) of Melbourne. We caught a tram right out front from our hotel into town and got off at Federation square. We had a little walk around there which is a big square and attached to it are some neat architectural museums. It's also right on the banks of the river so we had a little wander down there. From the bridge over the river you can see down to the big MCG stadium (Melbourne Cricket Grounds) They play cricket there but also play some AFL. We hopped on the free city circle tram that took us over to Waterfront city. It's a new area that has been built up and is still building in a harbour. They have ... read more

We woke up early the next morning and the caravan park put on a free pancake breakfast for everyone so we had pancakes! Yum!! we drove down to the harbour area where someone built a replica of an old 1600’s boat so we took a few pics and dad talked to a local fisherman of course. On our way back to Melbourne we stopped at Cheese World. A local place that makes all kinds of cheese locally. We could have spent hours in there. We tried just about every cheese and we all walked out of there with heaps of cheese. It was much sunnier today and we stopped at a lookout called Bay of Islands. It was beautiful there! The last stop we needed to see was London Bridge. At one time the bridge had ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road February 19th 2011

Up early this morning and we all piled into Leahanne's car. We made our way out of Melbourne towards the great ocean road. The weather wasn't great but not terrible. The sun would come out but it was super windy! We made a pit stop for some breakfast and our first stop was a lighthouse. Great views from here! The wind was blowing us all around like crazy though. We continued on our journey. Next stop was the sign over the road for the Great Ocean road. Dad and I ran into the middle of the road to get our picture taken under the sign. We had to be quick though! Our drive took us all along the beautiful coast and then we went a bit inland in a treed area. We saw two people stopped ... read more

Spent the day out with Leahanne and then in the evening we went to collect mom and dad from the train station in town. Unfortunetly we forgot that a rugby game was on tonight at the stadium right by the train station so traffic was insane!! But we got them and drove to their hotel. They were staying close by to Leahanne's place. Mom, dad and I went out for some dinner and I took them out to the bay for a view of the city. Got all caught up on their trip around NZ and they walked me back to Leahanne's place. We are off to do the Great Ocean Road tomorrow!!! Can't wait!!!!... read more
