Lhasa Tour day 1 & 2 Could not sleep well at all with breathing problem, a hint of a headache and the noise from adjascent road. I had already been advised not to take a shower. Next morning a new guide picked me and walked to our base hotel (New Mandala Hotel). This definitely was a better hotel. The room was on the quite side and you got a breakfast in the morning. I was to await the tour mate who was sharing my room. As it turned out Mark Ayoub was a Californian 4th generation Syrian belonging to the Syrian Orthodox Church. At 20 years old he was 6' 8" tall basketball player and was easy to get on with. He had been to Bali etc. and is going to Kerala after Bhutan, Delhi, Mumbai ... read more

Quinghai Railway. This was one of the highlights of the tour more so that the Everest Base Camp is now closed. After checking out of the hotel at 0800hrs I had problem getting a taxi and in the end had to settle for a motorised cycle rickshaw. It appeared that they were not allowed to carry foreigners as he was doing everything he can to avoid any police, there were plenty of them at every corner, on the route. The alternative was for me to hide my face to prevent recognition. The navigator maps were great as they were "off-line" which saved me a few times. The rickshaw was trying to take me to the bus station that run buses directly to the airport. So much for communication. At the station some of the information was ... read more

Beijing City Tour. The tour plan was good, it covered the top four attractions of the capital with two informative shopping stops. There was an Australian couple, two Greek girls living in London, a couple of lads from Costa Rica who were in Beijing for the Marathon, a Dutch girl who was doing some landscaping design in Xining and myself in the party. Only later I came to know that some of them had paid nearly twice as much as I did for the tour. I had miscalculated the time, had to rush out even without a shave as the guide was waiting in the reception. First port of call was the Forbidden City. As the name implies it was forbidden for all except the Emperor’s immediate court and high officials. It was a "city" as ... read more

Off to Beijing Finally I am on the 4th trip of my travels. I have found the blogs invaluable in keeping friends and relatives updated on my status (a lot are worried of my age. I have looked through my blogs, sometimes just for revisiting the memories and osmetimes to answer a help query on Tripadvisor for which I had forgotten the details. So, I have decided to continue with the blogs. Sorry to anybody finding it tedious and boring. Thankam's return from India signaled that I can be on my way at last. Flew from Dublin with Etihad Airlines yesterday morning. The flights to Abu Dhabi and onward to Beijing was very pleasant as both had plenty of spare room to relax and stretch legs. Flying over the Hindukush the air got very turbulent and ... read more

Terracotta Warriors and other We left Xian around 0900hrs. It was a long drive to the small town where Terracotta Warriors were being excavated. On the way we stopped at the Huaquing Palace commonly known as Hot Springs. The Palace was built by later dynasties. The palace was the summer retreat of the Emperor and his favourite concubines. There were a lot of small lakes (full of fish) around palace rooms. There were also many baths in different shapes and one wondered if they were influenced by the Romans with their techniques in water canals and endearment to bathing. The whole complex with small and beautiful walk ways around the gardens and palace buildings were built on the side of a high mountain atop which was another palace building (now with a ropeway to it). In ... read more

Xi'an City I practically slept very little as I had to get up at 0400hrs. Was at the airport in time. Met Tessa and Ryan in terminal 1. Unfortunately the flight was delayed more than an hour and half and it was midday when we arrived at the hotel in Xian city center. It was first time I was in a Dreamliner and I liked the aircraft. It was more roomier than most aircraft in that class and a there was an ambience. I was very apprehensive of the quality of the hotel more so because Ryan and Tessa also had booked there because of me. To our amazement Xian Tooyo was a modern hotel, close to the Norh Wall gate, almost in the center of the city. The rooms were really spacious, modern shower and ... read more

Day2 Beijing City and Day 3 Hiking on the Great Wall As we had tedious day ahead (hiking on the Great Wall) we tried to keep the city tour to the minimum. Tessa, Ryan and Alex came in the morning and picked me up from the Hotel. We travelled by underground most of the time afterwards. Like most "undergrounds" it was easy to navigate once you got the hang of the different gates that exited to different streets or you had an help to help you with. As Tessa had not been to the Temple of Heaven and I did not mind another trip there we went there first. Next to the Lama temple which had some gorgeous buildings rivalling even the ones I had seen earlier. This was an active temple and worshippers were burning ... read more

Ernest and Priya lived on the outskirts of Tucson. It was a single story sprawling house with beautifully kept gardens in the front and back with a swimming pool in the back garden. It was very private as there were no houses in the back ( there was a flash flood run off at least 100m wide with bushes and cactii). Ernest had taken time off take us around Tucson. On Sunday after church we had our first trip to the hills surrounding Tucson. The hills give Tucson a insulated atmosphere and probably protects it from extream weather such as tornados. It is an arid place but something strange happens as you drive up the hills which are approximately 7000+ feet (2000+m) high. At first there was only some bushes in the arid plains, the vegitation ... read more

The road up

This was the longest stretch we had driven in one day. Some 600 miles were covered in 9 hours including 2 stops one for lunch and one for fuel. The roads for most part was good but also included some single lane roads. This is never a problem as the trucks using these were also going at a fair speed. We started from Vegas , a bit late, around 1200hrs and reached Mini and Mathachans house in El Dorado Hills before 2100hrs. The change in scenery also was spectacular as go past the rockies the whole area become more lush and green. As we approach even though it was dusk we could see the rolling hills covered in vegitation and vineyards. As with the others we had seen the house again was big. It was well ... read more

The drive from MonumentValley was a bit more interesting with varied interesting rock formations on both sides of the road. It was 7 hour drive and we got to Henderson, Las vegas before nightfall. On the way we took a small detour to see the Hoover dam which is in many thriller movies. The Hoover dam is mainly a hydro-electric dam on the Colorado river. Built around 1930s this spectacular arch dam creates a huge reservoior of water and produce enough power to supply Vegas and more. Also spectacular is the road bridge over the dam which was built recently. Even in the evening the temperatures in the dam area (sheltered by hills all around) was so high we had a bit of problem adjusting to it at first. Henderson is a quite suburb of Las ... read more
