Our Lady of the Peace. What a name for a city, there must have been a lot of fighting going on around when the city was named. We reached Nuestra Senora La Paz just before sunrise. As the city is built inside almost a canyon when you approch the city you are astonished with the low central area, with their cluster of lightings, and the city climbing, spreading on to hills surrounding, the street lights thinning as they move away and up into the hills. We were coming from the top flatlands winding our way down into the city center. The bus ride from Uyuni to La Paz was another 11hour trip. Took a taxi to the hotel as the hotel was in the very center of La PAz. The staff was courtious enough to let me occupy ... read more

This is a reproduction of a blog entry I deleted by mistake. The next morning we were picked up from the hostels for our pre arranged tour. The vehicle was a Toyota Luxus 4x4. After doing a rond of Uyuni we headed of to the cemetery of trains. This appears to be one of the standard destinations of the tour. There were a lot of train engines, most of them corroding away, not surprising that slat flats were not far away. If you are interested in trains it will be an interesting place to visit but for me it was an indication of the state of railways in Bolivia. As in most of South and Central America the age of trains seems to have passed. Most routes have been taken over by buses or more recently ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Tupiza March 4th 2013

Tupiza was a small village of no onsequence. Now mainly due to back pacKers things are improving, the roads are getting better, there are good places to eat and a few ATMs and reasonable places to stay. The costs are half of what is in Argentina across the boarder. The town is surrounded by hills of a particular nature. They are almost bare and compltely made of red stone (something like the laterite stone, but dry). It is something unique to this area. The hills are with sharp sides. Erosion has made interesting statuets and figures on these rocky formations. There are 4 wheel drive conducted excursions to the hills. After our pleasant "Ride with the Gouchos" experience in Salta myself and Laticia opted for a horse riding trip to the hills rather than a jeep excursion. ... read more

South America March 3rd 2013

When you get to Salta it is quite different from middle and south of Argentina. Here you see more of an influence from the indiginous people. The population is both of European and indigenous origin and a mixture of the two. Contrary to my ideas this is not so small a city sprawling in the valley between the mountains. There is a rope lift to the nearest hill (500m) from the central park. Once there you can see an overall view of the town. After checking in at the hotel went to see most of the parks and commercial areas of the town throwing in a church and a convent which were famous, the former for the ornate, almost all gold gaudy interior, the latter for the carved door and ornate doms. The favourite food here ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta March 1st 2013

This is a 24 hour long bus trip from Iguazu to Salta. The plan was to see a bit of this beautiful country. Upto now all my travels had been by air and I must admit that I had seen very little of this beatiful country. Even the bus trip to the glacier walk was useless in this respect as it was raining all day and the windows were all misted up.The first part of the journey starting at Iguazu at 1000hrs reaching Corrientes at 1900hours. There we have to change buses leaving Corrientes at 2100hrs and reaching Salta next morning 1030hrs. For the first 30 minutes (50km) it was through dense forest. Then the forest partially gave way to planned tree plantations. The country side was still green and lush. Within a couple of hours ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú March 1st 2013

Early in the mourning after having something for breakfast nearly everybody at the hostal was eager to catch the bus to " Cateratas". The waterfalls are approximately 30km from the town. The bus takes about 30 to 40 minutes and they charge you 30pesos eachway. Very efficient survice running every 20 minutes. Non - South Americans pay 135 pesos for entry to the natural reserve.Since I had opted for the Grand Voyage Tour, me along with people who had selected the same tour, were first given a guided tour of the rain forest through a designated track, on a truck, converted to carry people on top safely. A bilingual guide explained things about the forest, its flora and fauna. As expected we saw a lot of giant spiders and thousands of butterflies, one or two toucans, a ... read more

After 4 days of thrills, disappointments (weather), and a small bout of flu finally the day has come leave El Calafate. The first day of awe and the thrill of trecking on the Perito Morino was not in the least diminished by the incessant rain which tried it's best to dampen our spirits. If anything the only disappointment was the photos which would have been fantastic on a sunny day. As for my hosts Sergio and Cecilia ( who between them runs the Hostal Amancay) made me welcome and made me at ease and was there whenever I needed them (cups of boiling water for medicine). The place itself was clean but very basic. In view of the worsening flu, on the second day, l decided to try my hand at my favourite past time. One of ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 25th 2013

This the continuation of my blog from BA. Had some confusion with the last blog as it was typed in 3 days later. Took the 1500hrs flight from Buenos Aires. It took 3.5 hours to Calafate Airport. Contrary to reports from from many bloggers I did not experience any problems with Aerolineas. It was on time and a good service except that the food package was out of date. In El Calafate Airport, the sun setting over Largo Argentina when we arrived. It was so beautiful. The Setting sun was over mountains beside the azul lake . The airport is ~30km from the town itself. They have an excellent way of getting you to the town for ~13 Euro they will deliver to the hotel door and collect you from the hotel and bring you back ... read more

3rd day in BA.Have typed this once. But seems to have lost somewhere in the computer laberynth. After one of the best steak dinners last night it is pay back time. Have to work this off. The disappointment of the coach tour prompted me to get on a hop-on-hop-off bus tour by BA bus. Checked with Buenos Aires Bus regarding availability. Was assured that we can get on any of the stops to start the tour. First bus starting from stop 0 900hrs. Off we go to stop 25 . There was a huge board showing tour times and saying that we buy the ticket for the tour on bus. Had to wait 2 hours for the first bus to arrive (did not take into account that it is a4 hour tour and we were at the ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 24th 2013

On to second day in BA. The hop on hop off bus tour was excellent. May be because it was past the peak tourist season, I encoutered very little problems as reported by others, of not being able to get on bus, if the trip was brocken. The communication side of BA bus has a lot to be desired. We specifically checked with the company where we can board the bus and the reply was "at any stop". When you get to stop 25 there is a big notice giving details of the route and saying that " you can buy your ticket from the bus". When the bus arrived (first bus and we were the penultimate stop, hence waiting for nearly 2 hours, again our fault) we were told that we cannot buy tickets on ... read more
