Trans Alpine Railway and Kaikoura. We left Franz Joseph by 0900 hours after collecting the video of the Kayak session. Our aim was to get to Greymouth by 1300 hrs. On the way we stopped at a few view points to see some waterfalls, a bridge where you could get a magnificent view of the snow capped moutains, and again at a sea side supposed to be a surfers paradise (only a couple of people surfing). Again the scenery on the way was unbelievably beautiful, I keep repeating that, between the mountains, rivers and the rain forest. Then we stopped at a small seaside town, Hokitika, famous for works in jade and we had a chance to see the craftsmen at work. Some of the group bought small items as souvenirs which were symbols of Maori ... read more

Wanaka and France Joseph Glacier. As predicted Sunday was a white wash. All the plans made by Burto for kayaking, horse riding, sky jump etc all had to be cancelled. It rained almost non-stop all day. There was no point even driving up the hills to have a good view of Wanaka as the low clouds almost obliterated the view. He changed plans quickly and we went to see the "Puzzle World" an assortment of curious things starting with 3D images, faces of famous people with their eyes following you, a room which fools your sense of proportion another which mocks at your sense of balance and gravity etc. There was also a large maze where you have to negotiate your way to four coloured havens and finally find your way out of the maze. There ... read more

Queenstown and Activities Once in Queenstown as most activities were cancelled due to inclement weather all we could do was to go out, familiarize ourselves with the town, get back, have dinner and get ready for the trip to Milford Sound early tomorrow. Queens town is little picturesque town on the lake Wakatipu but more importantly it has become the center of activities for tourist. There are numerous daring and not so daring activities organised from here. Starting with the serene Milford Sound Cruise, bungy jumping, gondola, paragliding, jet boarding, parachute jumps, scenic flights, flights to glacier and glacier treks.. the list just goes on and on. In our case we had put everything to the day after as the full day would be taken up with Milford Cruise. We had an early start as we ... read more

Christchurch and Lake Tokapi There was small delay in the connection at Sydney. There were only a couple of flights to Christchurch. I was booked on a 1930 flight with a flight time of three hours. With the time difference of two hours I landed in Christchurch at 0030hrs. With the fog at the airport it was a touch and go affair, the first landing had to be aborted. But then it seem to have lifted slightly and we landed safely only a few minutes late. At that hour the only option to get to the hostel was by airport transfer service. The coach took you to the hotel door. Greg (owner) had left the front door open with instructions on the desk how to get into the room. The room was spacious and only next ... read more

Finally after my 67th B'day the day has come to the second leg of the journey. While the South American trip was a novice experience with all its surprises I am expecting nothing like that from this trip. The good thing is that as I am expecting less there will be less of a disappointment if it does not turn out to be as fantastic. Who knows this trip may still hold some revelations. I had one most pleasant surprise already; on my B'day a long lost friend who was my best mate at the primary school managed to track me down after 50 years. The wonders of modern technology !. We had been catching up with each others life stories over the web for the last couple of days. Thanks PJ for looking me up. ... read more

Lima the Peruvian Capital. I was sorry to leave Cuzco on St. Pat's Day. Even though I had 4 days in the city, I was away for 3 days on treks and tours. One day can not do justice to Cuzco. I could not even go to the Irish Pub for a pint of of the black stuff on St. Patrick's day as I had to be at the airport by 0900hrs. I also did not realise the airport was inside the city unlike in La Paz. The flight to Lima was pleasant and short. As we soared through the valley I could see the the tracks of the Inca trail hugging the slops of the mountains. Lima was far removed from Cusco and Arequipa. It was hot and humid. Even though it rains very little ... read more

Before I start I must admit I was in no condition to do the Inca Trail. If I had known how arduous a task it was, I would have never even considered attempting it. Well I did not know it and sometimes ignorance is a blessing. To compound the problem it was almost a personal trek and the only other person in it was a Canadian student of Russian parents who was fit as a fiddle.Having said that Alexander was very understanding and encouraged me a lot to go on. We were picked up from the hotels 0430hrs, transported by bus, in two hours, to Olaytantambo from where we boarded a train to KM104 where the train stopped (in an hour and a half) to let us out to begin our trek. There was no station ... read more

Cusco and the Sacred Valley. I had often wondered why there was no major conflicts in the Andean countries between the Spanish descendents and the indigenous population in spite of the fact that the former had intellectual supermacy and occupied top echelons of society, the latter forming the lower rungs of society. My Cuzco tour guide gave me an insight into why this is so. She was very passionate about her Inca heritage hated what the Spanish for what they had done to her (may be stupid) forefathers and their heritage, but she could not deny her staunch Catholic beliefs the spread of which was the main reason given for the distructioin of their Inca Culture. Like the ideotic Muslim zealots of Bhoomiyan, distruction of ancient statues of Buddha in Afghanistan, and Timbuktu recently the Spanish ... read more

Copacabana and Arequipa. Things don't pan out exactly as we plan, that is where we need a little flexibility. The Marathon race in La Paz meant we had to leave early, but we did not reach Copcabana early. Most roads in La Paz were already blocked and the bus had to take a lot of side roads ( most of them already choc-a-bloc) to get out of teh city. By 1100 hrs we were in Copacabana. On the way we had to cross the the waters which connected the the large side of Titicaca to the "small" side by a channel of about 1km wide. It was almost like a mini Bosphorous Straits' crossing, The bus was loaded to one float and the passengers were in another motor launh. I had originally hoped to take a ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Beni Department » Rurrenabaque March 10th 2013

Rurre, as the locals call Rurrenabaque, is a small town of some 10,000people. The airport is in the town but the landing strip is 2km away. It appears to be an old settlement, on the banks of river Beni, one of the myriad of "small" tributeries of Amazon river. It is approx. 700m wide and fast flowing. The tour operator was waiting for me at the airport, but as the flight from La Paz was more than an hour late the tour had already left. He was very apologetic and was helpfull in rearranging my return flight and hotel accommodation so that I can still get my 2 days in the jungle trip. The hotel was on the outskerts of the town but was very scenic and environmentally friendly. It was a resort style hotel with all ... read more
