From Bundaberg we camped the night by a free rest area with at least 40 other motorhome, caravans and trents at Calliope just outside Gladstone and had a good chin wag with our neighbours before being chased indoors by the many mosquitos. We continued on the next morning to Rockhampton and spent most of the day there visiting the very impressive botanical gardens with its huge bird walk in bird aviary. They also have a small zoo and even more surprising it was all free! Next stop was Emu Park, a very beautiful coastal area east of Rocky before moving further up the coast to Yepoon where we stayed the night at a friend's house hooked up to their power. Emma put on a lovely meal and breakfast the next day so duly refreshed we took ... read more

At Rainbow beach we stayed in a national park camping area so that we could just hop on the tour bus to Fraser Island the next day. We took in some of the local sights at Rainbow beach including an absolutely amazing sand dune that made my calf muscles cry out in pain by the time I had walked from one side to the other! The trip to Fraser is definitely recommended especially on a one day tour on a special 4wd bus. With no recent rain so many many 4wd's were bogged in the sand and glad we were not one of them. Our bus just never faultered. Fantastic beach and bush walk, beautiful lakes and informative commentary. Pete even had a close encounter with a snake in the men's toilet! Saw dingos on the ... read more

Kids have all flown the nest and much as it was lovely to have us all together for a week Pete and I have been looking forward to starting the next phase of our trip so we headed for Toowoomba to catch up with old friends from way back to spend a couple of days with them. We had a great time trying out Mattie as we camped next to a church which adjoined our friend’s house and slept in her once again. Tried out the shower which was great once Pete had remembered to turn the gas on! Toowoomba is huge and lots to see and do but we unfortunately had to return to Cornubia to pick up mail that had arrived for us so didn’t see much of the city. It is Queensland’s largest ... read more

Our 23 days cat sitting is about to end and time has flown by so quickly. We haved kitted out Mattie and purchased bikes so now keen to try our hand at free camping after we have visited friends in Towoomba. Mattie has sign writing on the back now as per photo and we have already received a toot from a fellow kiwi. Weather is still lovely with no rain and am not missing those heavy frosts that we had in Rotorua. Shopping malls here are so big and plentiful. Grocery shopping seems very reasonable and dining out the same as NZ. Bird life is varied and noisy. Had to slow down for a wallaby on the road yesterday! Roads are great and Aussies considerate drivers. ps not missing working and reading plenty so life is ... read more

Cat sitting is going well with Charlotte the cat having finally accepted us all. The kids, only ever having had a budgie, and mice as indoor pets are giving her lots of attention and she is just loving it. The cheeky magpie that pinches her cat food was startled the other day and lost it's way out of the house. Pete had fun and games trying to catch it and finally get it outside. It was not too upset as it was back within a short time for some more! Can't believe just how many wallabies are around the property and how they just sit and watch us curiously at sunset and sunrise. With our kids here for the week Pete and I have been dropping them off at the Theme Parks while we have been ... read more

It was with much relief that we finally boarded the bus in Rotorua to take us to Auckland and Pete and I could at long last relax as we honestly didn't realise how much last minute stuff there was to do in that last week! I did, however, manage to fit in an exhilarating tandem skydive courtesy of my wonderful employers at Checkmate and one thing that I can cross off my bucket list. The youngest of our 25 year old twins, finally left home for the first time and moved into a flat only 24 hours before we moved out of our rental property and our new tenants moved in! Most of our gear was safely transferred back to our main home to be stored in the garage apart from a collection of 25 old ... read more

Last day of work for us both! Sad in some respects as we will miss our workmates after all this time, especially me after 17 years! Excited though (and nervous) about what the future will hold. There is so much to do and only 5 days to get it all done. This is one of them. Check this blog actually works and let everyone know.... read more
