Ok, so I've been here for a month and a half and am finally finding the time to write a brief blog post about what I am doing at the moment! I'm not lazy, just busy! I arrived back here on 9th January, was picked up at the airport by David (My African dad!) and we came straight back here to Kitengela. It seems to be a bit bigger than last year, more buildings going up, but still the same little town from last year. We are living in a different house to last year, as the old one was damaged by a building in the same compound which collapsed, so they had to move! We now live in a house in our own little compound type thing, with a garden - perfect for sun-bathing at ... read more

Ok, this isn't an actual blog post, I'm just letting you know that I will be doing it again after I leave for Kenya tomorrow. I fly at 7pm and will arrive in Kenya at 6.30am their time. I am completely packed (there is a little bit of concern over the weight of my bags, but I'm going to see what happens when I'm at the airport tomorrow) and am unable to lift my bags more than about 2 inches off the floor - heres hoping there is someone at the other end who is willing to help me! Thank you to anyone who has donated items to the school, or money to enable me to buy bits once I am there - Iwill keep you all updated about how I am getting on. Keep in ... read more

Ok guys, sorry this has taken me so long. Internet here is expensive and we dont always have a huge amount of time in the towns! This will be very brief because if i wrote it all down, you would all be dead before you finished reading it all! Tanzania: firstly went to Snake Park, in Arusha. Then headed to Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater - saw lots of monkeys (far too many monkeys!) and 2 rhino as well as a leopard, spotted by Dexter whilst everyone else was asleep in the vehicle! we have never jumped up as fast as when he called out leopard. we were around 10m away from it, in the tree, and it left sharpish but we had a really good view of it! The cratyer was absolutely stunning - ... read more

Ok, so time for another very brief update! Im now in Malawi, having completed the gorilla loop and having new people join the trip (cant remember what i said in the last entry - sorry if i repeat myself!). We have spent 4 days on Zanzibar - it is amazing, completely clear blue sea, beautiful sunsets over the ocean, white sand etc etc. spent three days at the beach and then one day in stone town - i did a spice tour and then was taken to see the old slave market site - we saw where the slaves were kept before the market - a tiny room with enought room (apparently) for 75 people. There wasnt much room left after our group of about 15 went in, and those slaves were kept there for at ... read more

Ok! Currently back in Kitengela! Have popped back for a day to see Alun, seeing as we have a free day in Nairobi. Since i last made an entry, i have been throught Uganda, Rwanda and back to Kenya! My favourite trip by far has been the gorillas, and any trip that i do from now on will have to be amazing to beat it! After an hours walk up a mountain (possibly the steepest in the world, if my lack of breath all the way up is anything to go by!) the guides told us that we needed to leave our bags to get closer. The first gorilla i saw was eating in a tree. After a few minutes, it rolled down the roots and landed at our feet, at which point the guide pusghed ... read more

Ok, i haven't written for a very long time! Apologies for that! Basically, since i last wrote, I have left Kitengela and am now in Nakuru - my teaching came to an end. It was so difficult to say goodbye to all the children - lots of tears from both me and the kids, which made it even harder. They kept asking when i when i would be coming back, and when i said i didnt know, they got very upset, especially std 8. If i dont go back before December, i wont be able to see them again. There was a goodbye assembly for me, in which the kids sang and said thank you. Some of them then gave me presents - i now have 18 bracelets and 8 necklaces. I had them all on ... read more

On Saturday, we visited David Sheldrick elephant orphage - it was amazing! The elephants were so cute - some of them there were only 1 month old and they were so small. They had to wear blankets to keep them warm enough, or they could catch pneumonia! They showed us two groups of elephants - the first was the really small ones, and the second group, which they fed 2 bottles of milk each to - they were huge bottles, and they all drank their two in about 2 minutes! They amde such a mess as well. I cant wait to go back when i am on the Oasis trip - one hour watching them was not enough! Didnt really do anything on Sunday - went out at abuot 4 to play a game of pool, ... read more

I havent actually been up to much in the last week or so. I have been into Nairobi and bought some sports equipment for the kids with the money that Lesley gave me - I got a cricket set and ball, a basket ball and a pump. I am going to spend the rest on books for the library, and am getting them this weekend when I go into Nairobi again. I played cricket with Std 6 on Monday - they didnt really understand the rules - it was more hit the ball and then the next person hits it - there was no actual playing cricket as such. They were all so desperate to have a go with the bat they were standing very close to the wickets, and as you can imagine, someone got ... read more

Hmm, not much has really happened in the past week. I spent Tuesday and Wednesday invigilating exams for standard 4 - so boring. I had to sit in the classroom the whoel day and repeatedly say 'silence' 'be quiet' 'i shouldnt be able to hear you talking' 'boys, will you be quiet' etc etc, you probably get the idea. They completely ignored me and just carried on talknig amongst themselves for most of the exam! i did feel very sorry for them though. most of them arent even 10 and over the two days they had a 2hr 30min exam, 2hr 15min exam, 3x 1hr 40min exam and 2x 40 minute exams. How mad is that? there is no way you can expect children of that age to be quiet for that amount of time. They ... read more

Went on a safari to Nairobi National Park yesterday. Left the house at 7.15! Firstly we went to the animal orphange. We were the only visitors there, but it was only 8.30. No one else was mad enough to be out. A guide came with us (for a tip), and he took us right up to the animals. Most of the cats hadnt been let out of their sleeping quarters, but he took us around the back so we could take some photos. The first one he took us to was a female lion. We stood at the opposite side of the cage to her, and he told us it would be fine to put our camera against the wire and take some photos. Whilst taking my last photo - i was kneeling on the ground ... read more
