Very organised this morning for our move...we even made a toastie for our lunch pack. Tram to Termini & then a train to Napoli 3.5 hours. Quite a full load. Then another train to Castellammare di Stabia. Picturesque journey through horticulture fields...mostly olives and the trees are shaped just like ours...or the other way round...must be doing something right. (They are planted quite alot closer together too). We were a bit lost to start with until we came across an elderly gentleman who walked us to our door....the beginings of a very friendly place. Our host lives in the same building..our apartment is quite large so it will be great for the next two weeks. We watched a documentary a few months ago that was about ship building which just so happened to be in Castellammare ... read more

9am tram to Termini & then meant to catch the A Line Metro to Popolo...however there was a 3 hour Strike on that line so we jumped on the B Line to Piramide Cestius. Looked magnificant in the bright sunlight...obviuosly been fixed up since 18-12BC. Piramide of Cestius: The pyramid was built about 18–12 BC as a tomb for Gaius Cestius, a magistrate and member of one of the four great religious corporations in Rome, the Septemviri Epulonum. It is of brick-faced concrete covered with slabs of white marble standing on a travertine foundation. The pyramid measures 100 Roman feet (29.6 m) square at the base and stands 125 Roman feet (37 m) high. A nice wander around in the shade of the huge Cyprus trees under the high walls of the cemetary housing Shelley & ... read more

It was 6am Sat & we decided to make a go of venturing the tram into Roma Centrale...what a good idea that was. Suggest this move if you ever want some quiet in Roma (??) With good photo opportunities we headed to the Colloseum...it was an easy stroll around & it looked splendid in it's morning sunrise. All the noise just dies away. We moved along the walk above Apian Way, they have just erected some recently discovered columns made from pink aswan granite that comes from Egypt. So history details are still being uncovered. Another excavation site has exposed some marble flooring of large circles & half circles in fantastic condition. I will try & find out although the excavation is not complete so the details won't be either. As they are digging deeper amongst ... read more

A good nights sleep...a bit disjointed but good sleep. A day to get our bearings of the local area. One way multi lane streets and must use the crossings or you will never get across...they are still crazy fast. Fabulous supermarket shopping at 'Simply'....using your own bags...we must make more effort to get away from the plastic bags! (I read they are finding table salt now contains small beads of plastic). Our apartment is very comfy, we have attempted as far as thought goes to go and vote at the NZ Embassy today...that would have made us one of the first to vote for our Electorate...seeing as voting in NZ does not start until Monday....but we are struggling with the jetlag....so Monday it is (& therefore NZ would have had a days voting by then). Love ... read more

Bonjourno Roma....arrived 8.40am due to 100mile an hour tail wind over the Atlantic. Huge queue through customs control...glad we didn't have any hold luggage & just our carryon bags. Straight outside to find the Terravision bus (prebooked online) which got us to Termini Stazione & we walked to our favourite Tabacchi shop to collect maps & local transport tickets. Onto the no.5 Tram that took us to Mirti. Not quite sure how long it would take we asked a lady on the Tram who we are sure in the end got off with us at our stop to help us when in fact she was to get off a couple of stops ago! This is what I love about the Italians. We found our apartment no problem & met Leonardo who spoke very good English with ... read more

There we were awake at 4am & even all the clocks set in advance didn't have to wake us. The hotel shuttle all ready for us at 5.30, friendly staff, no time for the breakfast but sent us on the way with a packed paper lunch bag 'grab n go'. Cute felt like we were off to school. The airport was so quiet that our booking in only took 10mins & we were ushered promptly through to customs check...so much for the 'grab n go'! anything to beat a queue! We left at 8am, 4 hours to Chicago, 3.5 hour transit, 8.5hours to Rome. (We arrived the next day at 8.40am to a sunny Rome. By the time we got to our apartment it was just on 24hours awake/journey time.) We noted the tornado signs above ... read more

LA! via Sydney..... landing just after an early morning breakfast. A little sleep for one & none for the other. Hotel shuttle direct from airport to our Hotel proved easy. We all think the heavy haze over LA is due to the Calfornia fires in Burbank. It turned out to be a warm day but not as hot as the previous few days. Alice & Drew came into LA early, all the way from Tulare (4 1/2 hours due to a couple of accidents) to meet up with us. They arrived about 10 mins after us to the Hotel. It was so great to see them & they are both looking good. We drove to Venice Beach a particularly wide & fine sandy beach with long promenades and palm trees and shops and people strolling, skateboarding, ... read more

Michelle kindly dropped us to the local airport & so we were off on our journey at last. A 45 min flight with a tail wind. Easy enough to locate our hotel...there were markings on the ground pointing us in the right direction. A good but short nights sleep...awake at 4am & found easy access to the International Airport. Reccomend the Ibis Auckland Airport Hotel. Very simple, clean, tidy, great shower and very comfy bed & pillows.... read more
