Geo: 37.5547, -76.3372We left Port Kinsale Marina around 7:00 this morning to cloudy skies. But, it never rained in the morning (it did overnight), and got clearer as the day progressed. There was absolutely no wind on the water today, so we would not have been able to use the mainsail today anyway. It was a very relaxing and lazy day.We docked in the same slip at Doziers Regatta Point, where the trip began. Tomorrow we will probably head back to the river house.Despite the mechanical and weather challenges, we have had a great time. At the end of May, we head out for our 5-week cross country road trip in the RV. ... read more

Geo: 38.0294, -76.5811We motored out of Solomon Island harbor around 7:15 am, and we immediately able to hoist the sails. We sailed out of The Patuxent River and into the Chesapeake Bay. The winds were between 12-16, with gusts to 25 knots, and the seas were 2-3 feet. We were making great speed across the Bay (between 6.5 and 7.5 knots), and sailed over to Hooper Island Light on the Eastern Shore. But....there is always a but.....when we jibed in 20+ winds, the mainsail clew cringle (where the bottom of the sail attaches to the boom) ripped right off the mainsail. After some intense flapping of the sail and verbal expletives, we were able to get the mainsail furled back into the mast. But we then had to motor the rest of the way to the Potomac. We ... read more

Geo: 38.1192, -76.3742If you saw my blog from yesterday, the picture showed some nasty clouds. Sheila and I walked to Cocomo's in Deltaville for dinner. It poured for about 10 minutes while we were in there, and then it was beautiful the rest of the night. We headed out of Deltaville this morning around 6:15. We sailed for about an hour with 10-12 knot winds, then the winds dropped to about 6-8 knots so we were only going about 2.5-3.0 knots. So we motor sailed pretty much the rest of the way. It was still an awesome day to be on the water. The seas were flat and you could see forever. We pulled into Point Lookout Marina around 3:15 pm. This marina is on the north side of the Potomac. We had not been there in at ... read more

Geo: 37.5547, -76.3372We headed back out today from the river house, around 2:10. The sky looked a little ominous but the forecast called for a slight chance of showers. We docked at Norton's in Deltaville around 5:15. The weather was great while we were out, but it looks like we could get some rain tonight (as you can see from the picture).Tomorrow, the plan is to head north again. We expect to take off around 7:00 am, and sail to Point Lookout Marina up the Potomac River.... read more

Geo: 37.6375, -76.5747We left the Tides Inn around 11:00 am to very light winds, but beautiful weather. We sailed up the Rappahannock to Urbanna. The Urbanna Town Center Marina does not even open for the season until May 5th, but the power is on on the docks, so we went ahead and docked up. The bathrooms are locked but we will just use the boat. The guy who runs the marina came by an told us we were welcomed to stay until the 5th. He recognized us from previous visits.Mojos and The Dockside restaurants in Urbanna are out of business, so we will just cook on the boat tonight. The little coffee/breakfast shop has reopened. So, we will go by there tomorrow for breakfast, and then head back to the river house to wait out the next ... read more

Geo: 37.6614, -76.4194Headed out again this morning around 9:50. Had a nice sail out of the Corrotoman and into the Rappahannock River. We decided to stay at the Tides Inn tonight, and Urbanna tomorrow night. It is supposed to rain from Monday evening through sometime on Thursday. So we will likely head back to the home dock on Monday until this wave of rain passes. We docked at the Tides Inn at Carter's Creek around 12:00. After kayaking for a while, we settled in by the pool for drinks. It is a beautiful day....about 74 degrees here. We met a couple by the pool who are coming by the boat for drinks. And then, Sheila and I are heading to Nate's Trick Dog for dinner.... read more

Geo: 37.7188, -76.4561This morning, I tackled the davit repair. The metal was bent and twisted and I was not able to straighten it with a sledge hammer. I had about decided that I would need to see if a local body shop would have the tools to straighten the bent and twisted end if the bar. Then, I had the brilliant idea to drive my truck over the bent end of the bar. I then had enough leverage, along with the Herculean strength, to pull the bend out of the bar. I then repositioned the truck on the bar and used a long monkey wrench to take out the bend. A few more whacks with the sledge hammer, and I was able to get everything lined back up.I did have to make a run to the ... read more

Geo: 37.7188, -76.4561We cast off from Deltaville this morning at 9:20 am, heading up the Chesapeake Bay. The temperature was about 50 degrees and the winds were coming out of the north (naturally since that was the direction we were heading) at about 10-15 knots, with 2-3 foot swells. We we were bouncing along pretty good under sail, but around noon, the davit that holds our dinghy broke. The six foot steel bar that keeps the 2 davit structures separated, popped 2 bolts on one side and started swinging wildly. Every time we dipped over a swell, the dinghy came swinging toward the boat, bringing the 6 foot battering ram with it. I turned the boat south so we were surfing the swells. That kept the dingy from swinging as wildly, so that I was able ... read more
