Our last day is winding down in beautiful Venice. This evening we have plans to meet up with friends (my boss Joe and his wife Pam) for drinks and dinner. By chance we happened to plan trips to Europe around the same time and this is the only day we were going to be in the same place. We had an hour or so before we were to meet up at Harry's Bar, which is famous for its Bellini's. We took a nice stroll walking through the San Marco area market place along the Grand Canal. We enjoyed watching the artist and seeing another bride & groom. We continued to stroll around the area and still a bit hung over from the night before, we decided to find a place to sit. We found a busy ... read more

After playing with pigeons we decide to check out the Ducale Palace since the line was short. The entrance puts you into an open courtyard which is connected to the Basilica San Marco. The domed steeples, statues and ornate design is mind blowing and stunning. The Palazzo Ducale, Ducale Palace or Doge’s Palace, was the seat of the government of Venice for centuries. As well as being the home of the Doge (the elected ruler of Venice) it was the venue for its law, courts, civil administration and bureaucracy and the city jail. We were not suppose to take pictures inside the palace so we don not have much to show how amazing it was. Although we did sneak a couple shots. The sizes of the rooms and the detailed paintings, molding and sculptures on the ... read more

After checking out the Frari Church we are now headed back to San Marco Square. We find our way to the Grand Canal and hop on the Vaparetto. We make a pit stop along the way to see the Santa Marie Della Salute Church across the Grand Canal from San Marco area. The Salute Church is under renovation so the dome is covered in scaffolding. However the exterior architecture is still impressive. The interior is simpler than expected and stripped of most of its contents and not quite as remarkable as the Frari Church we had just seen. After spending some time at the Salute Church, we make our way across the Grand Canal back to San Marco to see the grand finale of our list of must see churches- Basillica San Marco and the Ducale ... read more

This entry is just about the Frari Church. If your interested in the history of the church and artwork, read below. Otherwise by pass and go check out the pictures of this interesting church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (Church of the Frari) known simply as "Frari," this immense 13th- to 14th-century Gothic church built by the Franciscans (frari is a dialectal distortion of "frati," or brothers), it is the largest church in Venice after the Basilica of San Marco. The churche's campanile (bell tower) is the second tallest in the city after that of San Marco, was completed in 1396. As with many Venetian churches, the exterior is rather plain. The imposing Frari is built of brick in the Italian Gothic style. The exterior is deliberately plain in accordance with the Franciscan emphasis on ... read more

Since we did not get to bed until 3am and had a little more to drink than realized, we slept in missing our complimentary breakfast. We slowly woke up and finally made it out into the sunshine and life of Campo San Polo. I was still having some trouble figuring out my cell phone and we had no idea on the current time. We thought about 11am. Europe goes by military time and that threw me off when I programmed the time on my phone. When we emerged into Campo San Polo wondering what time was it? I ask a lady sitting on bench and she informed me to MY SHOCK that it was past 1:30pm in the afternoon. I literally gasped out loud - not believing it was already that late in the day and ... read more

After a couple hour nap, the sun has set and we are now ready for dinner. It is about 8:00pm as we start out to look for somewhere to eat. We stroll along the calle's which are all now with out the many tourist and very quiet. We spend some time looking in the windows of which now we have time to peer into. The calle's are so narrow and busy during the day it makes it hard to look in some of the window displays. We stroll along the Grand Canal and check out the Rialto Bridge at night. There are still a few tourist and locals trying to sell their song and flowers to the romantic strollers going across the bridge. We came upon a lone gondolier and starting some small talk and before ... read more

After enjoying the many colorful calles, canals and the Rialto Bridge we made our way through the Venice maze to the amazing St. Mark's Sq. Immediately we were in awe. I think only being there one can understand the amazing beauty and old world charm this square has.We proceeded to the center where hundreds of pigeons are gathered. At first I was not going to feed the pigeons, but after seeing others having fun and of course Bill begging me to do it. There I was with an arm and head full of Pigeons on me. Honestly this was fun and my fear of being pooped on was laid to rest when I was done. I was lucky no poop to write about. I read if we were pooped on the best tip is to let ... read more

After settling into our room, our Host gives us our keys and that was the last we saw or heard of him or anyone in our B&B. The key to our room is one of those big metal old fashion keys. I should have taken a picture of it. We set out to see Venice. We are a bit jet lagged, but too excited to spend our time sleeping so we set out to find some coffee and lunch. We just walk around the calle's around our B&B and find a little cafe. Bill orders a double espresso and I a cappuccino. Bill's little espresso is basically a shot glass of caffeine in a tiny little coffee cup. I thought it tasted disgusting, but Bill loved it. They serve coffee luke warm so it took a ... read more

We arrived in Venice about 10:30 in the morning on Friday, Sept 21st. We headed for information booth to purchase Vaparetto bus ticket to the Island of Venice. We found out that the 3 day Vaparetto ticket includes the public bus system and were told how to catch the public bus to the Island. A little disoriented and nervous we departed the airport and tried to figure where to catch this bus. We were not alone; others were hoping we were at the right bus stop too. About 15-20 minutes our bus dropped us off at Piazzale Roma which is the gateway to Venice. We had no clue where to go next. We immediately walked down some steps and there it was VENICE! It was beautiful - The Grand Canal lined with colorful and ornate buildings. ... read more

Our flight from San Diego to Washington DC seemed quick and painless we took some really cool pictures from the window of the plane over the San Diego coast and the amazing clouds we flew into. Our flight arrived in DC on time and we had a decent lay over. There was a nice little wine cafe and bistro right next to our gate, so we enjoyed a good glass a wine and some small talk with others waiting for their flight. We ended up buying a bottle of wine for our long flight across the Atlantic. We enjoyed the wine, but it did not make the flight any more bearable. The flight to Frankfurt was long and painful. We arrived around 7:30am Frankfurt time Friday, Sept 21. Our flight ended up arriving late and only ... read more
