Riding the Northeast Backcountry Discovery Route - Hancock NY to Rangeley ME - September 2020
a trip by Jim Coates
From: September 16th 2020
Until: September 26th 2020
This, the most recently announced Backcountry Discovery Route, starts in Hancock NY on the Delaware River (and the Pennsyvania Border). It tracks 1,300 miles of mostly dirt roads NE through the forests of New England, ending at the Canadian Border. After traversing the Catskills the route goes East into Massachusetts and the Berkshire Hills, then North into Vermont and the Green Mountain National Forest. Midway up the state it turns East again to enter New Hampshire and the White Mountain National Forest, eventually going North through the Rangeley Lakes and forests of Northern Maine to the Canadian Border. The Mid Atlantic BDR which I did earlier in the summer is ranked as one of the easiest. This new one is touted as one of the hardest. Luckily the twelve most “gnarly” sections have an “alt-easy” workaround, specially designed for 70 year old riders traveling alone like myself. So here goes!
