Up early to finish sorting my room and giving it a good clean before heading off on our Christmas holiday. Left the house at 11am and we expected the traffic out of Brisbane to be terrible, but it was flowing freely the whole way. We were spending Christmas with Matt’s nan (Dell) in Maryborough which was around a 3.5 hour drive, so pretty close in Australian terms! Dell is a fantastic lady, very sharp and intelligent and so very welcoming, which was lovely. After a cold and refreshing drink and an hour or so of chatting Rowena, Matt had a quick change and headed into the pool. It was heaven after the long drive and the heat and we stayed in for several hours, emerging slightly prune like! We all had a lovely chilled evening, with ... read more

Got up around 8.30am and was surprised to see Rowena up and about as it was a late one last night. However once she had let the carpenter in she went back to bed, and with Matt busy on the computer I contemplated what to do for the day. I downloaded a free one day gym pass for Fitness First in the city, jumped on the train and spent a few hours in the gym ‘bashing out a good session’ as we used to say. The gym had hair straighteners which was rather exciting, so I could actually make my hair look semi nice! When I got back, Rowena and I moved the chest of draws from the downstairs bedroom up into the room I am staying in and re-organised the furniture. I then had a ... read more

Instead of a day of sight-seeing, this morning I headed into work with Rowena to familiarise myself with where I will be working for the next month. The owner Luke, operates the business from his garage, and doesn’t live too far away which is handy, 30min walk or a quick cycle. It’s a very small company with just Luke, Rowena and Jay working there, and the office was a little cluttered – apparently this is something Rowena and Jay have wanted to tackle for a while! So after a morning of reading documents and getting sorted, after lunch Rowena and I made a filing system, sorted through the whole office, recycling, throwing away and ebaying necessary items and then cleaned the whole office. So quite a productive day all in all. As we started at 7.30am ... read more

Even after an early night, my 5am alarm clock was not welcome, today I feel tired! Alas morning daily routine completed and it’s soon breakfast time. I headed out to the station fairly early this morning and caught the 7.59am train, changing at Coopers Plains for the express train to the Gold Coast. I now have the local public transport system sussed, and to think, only a few days I looked like a rabbit caught in the head lights as I caught the train to the city for the first time. After the hour and a half journey on the train, I hopped on the bus to complete the rest of my journey to Surfers Paradise. It’s a very commercialised area with high rise buildings and lots of very tanned and toned looking people wandering around ... read more

After last night’s storm it was a lot cooler, and a nice temperature on my run this morning. Headed off to the station at 8am to catch the train into the city. I got off at South Bank and wandered through the CBD to the bus stop, on my way past I stopped in Brisbane square as there was a massive market selling local and fresh fruit and veg, homemade cakes, speciality chocolate, breads, cheeses, museli and I treated myself to a fresh raw juice with lime and ginger – very refreshing. I caught the bus to Mt Coo-tha, the other part of the botanical gardens I didn’t get to on Monday. Spent several hours wandering through the gardens but I much preferred the one in the city with all the flowers. These gardens were very ... read more

I have given in and am now living on ‘locals’ time, meaning I get up at 5am to play sport and do things. People here seem to utilise their mornings like we do our evenings, and running at this time is FAR more sensible. Getting up at 5am also means I can have a leisurely morning at a relaxed pace, perfect way to start the morning. Matt was off the station to catch the train to Uni, so I grabbed a lift with him at got on the 7.27am train into Central station. From here I then navigated to the correct platform, not too much of a challenge once I sussed the boards, and caught the train out to Beerwah station for the zoo. From home to Beerwah the journey took around 2.5 hours, and even ... read more

Got up at 8am for a run and quickly learnt at 8am its still WAY too hot! I cooled down and had a cold shower but just kept sweating, I had to stand there for about 30mins doing nothing just trying to cool down! HOW DO PEOPLE LIVE LIKE THIS???? Eventually cooled down enough to put on some suncream and have some breakfast. I walked down to the station – about a 20min walk and was totally drenched again. The man in the station office was very helpful, probably taking pity on this poor English girl who clearly isn't used to this heat! and explained all about the 'Go Card' - a bit like an Oyster card, and I was soon aboard the air-conditioned train (thank goodness) speeding into the city and South Bank Station. I ... read more

Another fairly early start, especially for a Sunday. Up at 8am and headed into South Bank in Brisbane to meet Amelia and Leighton – Matt and Rowena’s friends, for breakfast. South Bank is a lovely modern area with beautiful walk ways crafted from steel and bright pink hibiscus growing over, lines of trendy restaurants, plaza’s and a lovely relaxed atmosphere on the edge of the river. We all selected a nice looking place for breakfast and I had amazing muesli with yoghurt honey and fruit all mixed in – tasted fab (would be considered far too unhealthy by you though mum!) After a few hours of chatting, Rowena, Matt and I headed to the best bit of South Bank……the fake beach with a large lagoon style swimming area. Its great just relaxing and swimming whilst overlooking ... read more

I woke up briefly around 6am but promptly went back to sleep, not surfacing until 11.30am……totally unheard of for me, but I clearly needed it! Matt was off again today so after breakfast/lunch of a famous Matt omelette (they should be famous, it was scrumptious) we headed out. First stop; the bank so I could verify who I am and officially open my account. I can inform you that banks in Oz are just as bad as the UK, the queue was massive and it took ages! We then headed to the other side of Brisbane for Matt to collect a circular saw and a few other tools he bought from a guy who is moving back to NZ. With the tools safely stowed in the back of the car we headed home via the supermarket ... read more

I was intrigued to see what customs in Oz would be like, especially after my warning from Leonnie and Amelia about what you can and can’t take into the country. However after filling out the entry form and ensuring I didn’t have any of the prohibited items, I sailed through without even being checked. Matt, Rowena’s fiancé was waiting for me on the other side. Like a true gent he unburdened me of all my luggage and we drove to their house. After the tour and choosing which bedroom I would prefer I unpacked and had a snooze. After I managed to skype dad as he was back from Saudi, nice to catch up in person (well, as close as) on all the goings on. Before long Rowena arrived home, we chatted, the wine got opened ... read more
