Nafpaktos – what is the link between a bicycle combination lock A silver coin and a fridge magnet bought in three different countries years apart . The quest for today concerns the link between three strange things that are random items and at the time of purchase had nothing in common and bought years apart and in three different countries .. They have a connection but if you are like me you will wonder what they are. They are all items that Glenn has bought and will lead you to the solution Nafpaktos . . In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s Glenn was at grammar school. He rode his bike to school as kids did then . He locked it with a combination lock which had a security code to unlock it. As a child growing up in post war Britain there were less of the flashy toys to play with. We made our own fun playing in the sand in the local quarry, watching the trains speed by, putting coins on the line for them to run over. We collected car number plates. There were not so many cars on the road then and it was easy to sit on a wall with a pencil and paper and write them down. We lay in the grass watching the butterflies in the meadow . We collected wild flowers. We dipped our feet in the icy cold water of the river. We had I- Spy books. I Spy Castles. I Spy Bridges. We collected points for seeing various road bridges or features on them. If we were lucky enough ... read more

Well you have to do it don't you? Stand on the starting line for the 200 yard dash in the stadium in Olympia where it all started. All as in the Ancient Olympic Games and the modern version we all know and love. Queue music - Vangelis - Chariots of Fire and it's off you go. Running naked as the day you were born trying to beat other naked men. Olympia was on the way home as we are now wending our way slowly back to Igoumenitsa. Finding the ancient site was not easy. We mistakenly ended up at the car park of Camping Atreus where we intended to stop the night. The lady owner ran up the path as we turned round to try again for the archaelogical park. Parking in the end was relatively ... read more

From Navarino Bay Suzy climbed her way up a long and winding road. We had not planned to visit Nestas Palace at home but as time was not tight and we were trying to fill it in it seemed a good idea to detour and visit the little visited Myceanean complex. It was out of the way a little but somehow when you have time on your hands it makes sense to use it wisely and see something interesting. We are getting into the habit of rising later but even after eating breakfast , paying our bills we were still on the empty car park in the middle of nowhere at early o'clock. The car park was as always dusty. Suzy is looking dusty too and in need of a good wash, polish and spruce up. ... read more

You just cannot help yourself sometmes . Folk smile at you and you just have to smile back. You cannot help but say Kallimeera or kallisteera depending on the time of day to complete strangers when they say good morning or afternoon to you. Everything from driving down narrow impossible roads to silly bike riders with three on a bike leave you with an inane grin on your face. Like a Cheshire Cat we cannot stop grinning. Greece as a country just keeps on giving. After leaving Pylos we drove a few miles along the coast road to the shell filled beach of Navarino. The campsite is sprawling with eight streets running down to the sea. The prime real estate with a beach view has gone already and it looks as if once here folks hunker ... read more

" At various points in our lives,or on a quest , and for reasons that often remain obscure , we are driven to make decisions which prove with hindsight to be loaded with meaning " Sri Swami Satchindananda. Our holidays are a long time in the making. We start early with the planning to fit in with the time we have which is limited. Whilst I still have mudane work to contend with we have to be meticulous in our planning. We only have a certain amount of time and have to try to pack in as much as we can. We start off with the places that we consider must see and then work through the ones that seem worth a visit. Throw in train times under the tunnel, a visit to Athens and it ... read more

After one eye of Venice we had to go and see the other one. Sally Sat Nag did her usual car trick of taking us up high roads and down deep valleys. Through tiny Greek villages and high up impossibly narrow roads. We really have to invest in a new sat nag that caters for motorhome proportions. We have had some hairy moments of having to turn round or hold our breath in anticipation we will get through some small spaces. Up to now luck has been with us. The broken window in Suzy has held out too and looks as if the temporary repair will last until we get the old girl home for something more permanent. We have covered over 2000 miles average consumption 25 . 2 miles to the gallon. We were heading ... read more

Our next destination wasn’t too far away . So where is Suzy parked. She is somewhere known as the Eyes of Venice. The Venetians built their castle here at Koroni in order to survey the shipping lanes between the Adriatic and Crete. What a wonderful shipping lane it was too. The sea crystal clear aquamarine with tiny fishes swimming. The sand pristine. Guarded by a castle it is described as a town with steep streets leading to the castle. Koroni was one of Venices longest held possessions. Important for the production of siege engines. The fortified bluff commands grand views across the Messinian Gulf. It’s streets are stepped and ramped and all lead uphill. They have little changed since the Venetian occupation. The Michelin Guides does no justice to describing what is a pretty town. Suzy the motorhome has just driven past the aire in Monemvasia, over the causeway and headed up the hill towards the old town where she found a parking spot almost at the top. There were a number of cars already parked up the hill and we thought the place would be heaving however it appeared that most of those cars belonged to the residents who would have found it impossible to park next to their homes due to the low and narrow gateway to the town. This gateway gives no indication of the beauty of the place within the walls. Monumvasia is another hill town fortified and built on two levels. Yes you guessed it - the Lower Town and the Upper Town. It sits on a rock some 1150 feet above sea level and is ... read more

How about a bit of a change? We have done a city - Athens, a few museums, greek temples by the score,a handful of Cyclopean remains , the sea, the sand , the mountains and the monasteries. Let's do Venetian. It is easy travelling in Suzy to be able to do different things. We are not tied down to any one place. So let's go in search of marble pavements, the Lion of St Mark , a looming castle in an elegant small town which was contested between the Turks and the Venetians for years. It has a fair share of history in its medieval streets and holds the distinction of being the first capital of independent liberated Greece. Throw in a swanky marina full of yachts, the Bourtzi, picture perfect castle set in the cobalt ... read more
