“ Bees suck nectar from many different flowers”. (Here they have a great choice it is like a supermarket full of flowers) “One drop of honey cannot claim to come from one flower or another “ Greece has been a real eye-opener for us. We were not sure what to expect. We had read blogs from folks who overwinter in Greece and they love it and the people. We had read about three books on Greece and each gave a different view of the place and of places to visit. Sometimes we find ourselves staying on in places in Greece that we like. Normally we only stay one night in one place but for some reason we are falling in love with the sites and staying longer than usual. Greece is having a strange effect on ... read more

When the heart grieves over what is has lost , the spirit rejoices over what it has left. According to Greek legend Zeus (we have seen his home on Mount Olympus) released two eagles from opposite ends of the world . Where there paths crossed was considered to be the centre of the earth. The sky above Delphi was where that happened. We can understand looking at the place why the ancients considered it sacred. It was not hard to understand . Delphi was also known to be the home of the god Apollo. Thus making it the most sacred place in the classical world. Folks came to Delphi to worship and to consult the oracle to ask the gods what actions they should take in peacetime, in war. The power of Delphi just grew and ... read more

Setting off early we left our little piece of heaven so that we could get on the road to Thermopylae. The drive was quiet being a Sunday morning. The shops were firmly shut apart from the garden centres which looked as if they were going to be doing a roaring trade. Our stop was intended to be Thermpylae set in a valley between two wooded hills. The pass was the site of the famous heroic stand between the Spartan King Leonides, his 300 Spartan warriors against the Persian King Xerxes. In 480 BC an army of 7000 Greeks made up of simple soldiers with not much experience and 300 Spartans under the command of King Leonides met the overwhelming force of Xerxes and his 2,641, 610 Persian warriors. The number might be different depending what source ... read more

You know us by now don’t you? We like peace and quiet. We like to be on our own sometimes. Some might call us antisocial. We just like our own company but we also like to talk to other folks. The journey we took today had changed because we believed that the road was closed. We picked Camping Poseiden Beach II which sat right on the Aegean Sea. On the face of it it sounded quite nice. We struggled to find it hidden away along the beachfront. Reception was as always helpful and we were told to go to the right, follow the road and park anywhere. Our first thoughts were that the road was narrow and dark with overhanging trees which caused a lot of shade. All along the roadside were the usual tent cum ... read more

Can things continue to go wrong? Oh yes they can. Upon returning from paying for our night stop I heard a buzzing. A loud one much louder than the bees humming in the trees picking up nectar for this years honey crop.It was coming from Suzy. To be precise it was coming from Snoopy the sat nav. It gave up. It died a death and refused to work. We were lucky. Only a few weeks ago we managed to buy a new Sally Sat Nag so she had to come into play. Typically the one we need with Camperstops in has packed in. I also needed to be vigilant as Sally does not take Suzy's vital statistics so my job involved looking for narrow roads before we got to them and avoiding low bridges. We feel ... read more

17 hours on a boat!!!! It must be first apart from 1966. The SS Nevasa. A school ship that took me from Liverpool to Spain, Portugal and Africa. 2 weeks on board now that is long time. We did find things to do that passed the time. Food for tea, quizzes in the cabin. Looking out of the porthole until it got too dark to see anything. We even walked on to the upper deck where the wind blew the cobwebs away. Where a woman let her dog pee in the pool. Luckily the pool was empty but still she deserved a kick up the backside for doing it . I felt a sense of deja vue - we had only just seen the first grandpa, his son and their grandchildren peeing the bushes at an ... read more

We didn’t sleep too well last night . We had set our alarm on our mobile phone to wake us up. In the night it started to beep. Every few minutes it beeped making sleep impossible. In the dark we tried to work out why it beeped . In the end it was switched off. However by that time we had lost the ability to sleep and lay there listening to every sound outside. The assault on our senses left us feeling absolutely shattered. The roadside Laburnum trees were over 60 feet high in places. Yellow broom bushes clambered up the verges. We saw poppies in the fields - vivid red . The flowers were changing as we headed in a southerly direction for our appointment with a Minoan line ship that would take us to ... read more

D I ordered my baguettes and croissants yesterday and picked them up this morning. It had been another cold night. England is fairing no better as bad weather is predicted over the next few days. April should be April Showers and warmish weather. Occaisionally the weather turns as it did in 1979 and we get snow. When I mentioned the cold weather to the young lady who served me she smiled and said something that seemed odd at first. “ We like the cold weather “ “Do you?” said I wondering why. As we get older we prefer a more clement weather. I expected her to tell me they needed cold for a certain crop to perform well. Instead she smiled and told me that because of the cold you need more blankets. I looked rather ... read more

Day 3 – Les Islettes to St Croix en Plein What a cold night! It was somewhat unexpected and hard to believe that it is April. The wind even chilled the sheets on the bed making them cool to the touch. We shivered all night under our bedclothes. Even in the morning with the heating on in Suzy we shivered. We were woken up to the sound of birdsong coming from the trees in the wood next door. The church bells rang out. All our neighbours were abed as we drove away from our little idyll to head for our next port of call St Croix en Plein. Close to Colmar we had been in this area before. The journey was relatively painless and uneventful. Being a Sunday the lorries were parked up for the day ... read more

We slept well in our little corner of France. Woke up early to the sound of rain pattering on the windows and birdsong outside of Suzy. It is Day 2 of the holiday and we are heading for St Menoud or to be more precise a tiny hamlet called Les Islettes just outside of St Menhoud. We started off by going the wrong way. The new Sally Sat Nag told us where to go but she was very imprecise and we found ourselves driving 15 minutes in the wrong direction. It seemed a little as if yesterday was being repeated today. However the words from my thoughts for the day told me that failure is just a step to success. So that is how we looked at it - just a small failure . Soon we ... read more
