What makes the perfect town? A good well designed empty motorhome spot?. Mirepoix ticked that box. An easy walk into town?. Ticked box again. A lively busy environment ? It certainly delivered on that one. It needs an interesting square full of jaw dropping camera opportunites. Mirepoix was still delivering in bucketloads. Shops including a large Super U ? Of course they were there. A gatehouse ? We found that down a backstreet. And how about a brocante a Sunday tat market? Yes that was there in Mirepoix too. There was nothing missing . We even were treated to an organ grinder and a box of amazing cakes. After a very wet and sleepless night accompanied to the sound of thunder and heavy rain and the light show we had made the initial decision to drive ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Carmona October 9th 2018

Let's start the day by saying it is yet again hot with little sign of any cooling breeze today. We are heading out towards the coast with Carmona as our destination. Carmona is built on a ridge overlooking the central plain of Andalusia to the north of Sierra Morena. The city is known for its thriving trade in wine, olive oil, grain and cattle. . OUr journey took us past half completed buildings some houses some factories. It took us past empty greenhouses with the plastic flapping. It got us thinking about seasonal food. Have you ever picked up tomatoes on the shop shelves and looked at where they come from. Poland, the Netherlands and Spain. We wondered why in our own climate where we can grow tomatoes we continue to buy them from all over ... read more

" I believe it is impossible to be sure of anything" - Han Pei In our search for some cooler weather we are heading for the coast. Perhaps there will be some life there and we will see the sea for the first time this trip. Most holidays take the form of a few castles, the odd church, a monastery here or there and a bit of coastline with a train trip to the city thrown in. This one has not been normal. Perhaps we will have to wait until 2019 to get some normality back into our holidaying. We have set Silly Sat Nag to take us to Benicassim or Benny this or Benny that as I have always called them. Not on our radar we have in the past tried to avoid them like ... read more

We wake up to yet another hot hot day with little promise of shade. We hadnt expected this level of heat in October and were not prepared for it. My vertigo persists and I wish it on someone else so that I can get back to normal. Wobbling about is not my style. We left our camping spot and hit the road. Our destination the city of Badajoz. Of course it has walls around it so we are ticking the walls box again. Parking in Badajoz was a doddle. Glenn had again done his homework and managed to find a good camperstop, If you wanted you could stay over night for free. It had waste dumping costing nothing and free potable water. Close to the river it was within walking distance of the city. The area ... read more

"If your mind is empty it is always ready for anything; it is open to everything" Shunayu Sukuki How true this is. When we set out this morning we had an idea where we were going but little idea what we would find . So this morning I say to you "Hey Up Cowboys" Think Rawhide, think Wagon Train, think gun toting horse riding cowboys and coralls. You are going to need your imagination where we are going today and where you will find Gabby holed up. So where in the World is she? El Rocio - in Andalusia. A place with no tarmacced roads. All the roads are sandy. The wind blows the sand down the street . Where the horse is more prevalent as a form of transport than the car. In the heart ... read more

So that is us finished with Spain. The heat just got to us and the fact that there seemed little to do in the small towns that we thought would be interesting. A lesson perhaps learned the hard way. Never expect the weather to be exactly what you think it will be and never keep going back to the same country. At some point you just run out of things to see and do. I am not saying that Spain disappointed but it could have done better . C+ rather than the B I had hoped for. So where in the world is Gabby the motorhome. She is on a camping site near to the town of Ax le Therme. It is blooming cold and rather wet. I know it is a mistake to wish for ... read more

Europe » Spain » Extremadura » Plasencia October 7th 2018

Today was going to be Placencia day. Well that was the plan. Glenn had worked hard sourcing a parking spot using a mixture of Camper Contact, other peoples blogs and Google Earth. It could end up though a bit hit and miss. The heat is wearing us both out and we are finding it hard work to think what to do next. We have never had a holiday in the motorhome that has been quite like this one. Now the question you are requiring an answer to is did we get one? A parking space that is. So where in the world are we and our trusty companion Gabby? Somewhere down a back street near the cathedral in Plasencia. Squeezed in between two council owned Jeeps and in front of a garage door which hopefully the ... read more

Well we have done it again. Gabby is sitting high above a Spanish plain in Extemadura near to Caceres. . Its early in the morning and the sun is beating down. The town of around 2000 inhabitants have welcomed us with open arms by providing a large parking area just beneath the town walls. The locals clearly love their town as everywhere is clean. No sign of empty plastic bottles everywhere and bins overflowing. A local is watering the trees planted along the roadside before moving on to the baskets of flowers and finally dowsing the street to cool everything down. A bit of a labour in vain as the temperature is so hot the water quickly dries out and not a puddle remains. Its too hot for us and we plan a quick whistle stop ... read more

If Carlsburg made campsites they would shied a mile away from this one. Gabby is parked on the stinkiest campsite we have ever been on. The type of campsite where you start to smell under your armpits, you check the toilet and the drains on Gabby . You wonder if it is the town drains or the river nearby. There wasn't a lot of choice in this area and campsites were few and far between. Everyone it seems had ended up on the worse campsite for miles around. So how did Gabby end up there? We started out driving along some of the worse roads we have ventured on. We have passed fields full of pigs and cows. The landscape has changed considerably now that we have moved regions. We were heading for the motorhome parking ... read more

Sometimes I think you must wonder how we manage to remain friends and can have interesting conversation when we live 24/7 in box on wheels. A small one at that as well. Sometimes we do disagree but most times we find something to talk about from the things we see along the way to the things we will see tomorrow. From the state of roads to well the state of roads. So who has the worse roads in Europe? Is it the Belgians with their de dum de dum concrete roads or the Slovenian potholes around Lake Bled ? Perhaps its us Brits - nothing to do with Brexit or the Italians with their gems of roads around Poggibonsi? No after much consideration and deliberation it has to be the Portuguese who excel with the tiny ... read more
