Well we have done it again. Gabby is sitting high above a Spanish plain in Extemadura near to Caceres. . Its early in the morning and the sun is beating down. The town of around 2000 inhabitants have welcomed us with open arms by providing a large parking area just beneath the town walls. The locals clearly love their town as everywhere is clean. No sign of empty plastic bottles everywhere and bins overflowing. A local is watering the trees planted along the roadside before moving on to the baskets of flowers and finally dowsing the street to cool everything down. A bit of a labour in vain as the temperature is so hot the water quickly dries out and not a puddle remains.
Its too hot for us and we plan a quick whistle stop tour before moving on. The walls look as always impressive keeping those out who need to be kept out. Keeping those safe within. We expected a medieval town within and yet again were disappointed . Once through the main gateway no doubt called the gateway of the king we entered a modern town of grid like streets. All the houses painted white to reflect
the sun off them and all shut up. Perhaps they were holiday homes or perhaps the inhabitants were out at work. There were a few women about brushing the street outside their homes using their typical witches brooms but apart from that there was hardly a soul about. No shops, no church, no castle nothing. It took us all of five minutes to walk from one side of the town to the other I did find a shop and managed to buy a few groceries. We seemed to have found back of beyond. Our idea of a quiet holiday has turned out a touch too quiet for even us.
We didn't stay long instead driving out to the camping in the Monfrague national park. An area of outstanding natural beauty where for 35 euros or 45 you could go out in a 4 x 4 and birdwatch. We just wanted some quiet , some escape from the heat and to wash our dirty old clothes. We did all three .
At night we ate at the restaurant Pork chops thinly cut with some sort of sauce accompanied by chips. Not very Spanish but it served its purpose and
we had a good nights sleep as the temperature was slightly cooler up here in the mountains above Plasencia. Tomorrow we take in the delights of Plasencia . We know there is parking if we are lucky enough to find a space and it reputedly has a wonderful cathedral and some interesting buildings. Given our luck this holiday will we find the parking ? Will the church be open?
And another call from the solicitor - a 1913 plan of the house has turned up. Could we explain the boundaries ? Not exactly what you hope to do when on holiday. We cannot seem to get away from it . Even looking at the plan we cannot make sense of why it looks the way it does. Draw a line right down the middle of the garden front and back and the plan looks a bit more realistic . This is turning out a strange holiday.
Go on you can sing too - When I heard we were going to Galisteo I had to do it and change the words of the Queen song Bohemian Rhapsody . Galileo became Galisteo Figaro!!!!
