Gabby the motorhome is sitting on an almost empty car park outside of Camping Citta Bologna. We have been here before many times. Each time we get lost and miss the turning. Sometimes we pass the ladies of the night in broad daylight displaying their wares . Today we came a different way. We missed the turning but eventually after negotiating the one way system we finally managed to find the campsite. It looked almost empty. There was a reason as I was soon to find out. Our drive had been marred by heavy rain . It was still muggy and the work of fiction admits the rain will be short lived and the sunny weather will return. Last time we were here we bumped into an owner of a Globecar - discussed its merits and ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Lecco September 25th 2019

Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome? She is set up in a caravan site on the edge of a lake near to the town of Lecco. The sun is out . It is raining back home and it is unbearably hot here. It should have been an easy drive down here but Gabby despite being quite slim still weighs in at around 3 tonnes and her weight plays havoc with Glenns shoulders as he wrestles with her bulk on the Italian roads. It was a day of driving through a few countries today . First of all Stowitzerland still with snow on the peaks. Still with the greenest of green fields. Tunnels after tunnels until eventually we came out in Italy and reached our destination of Lecco. The plan was to use this campsite ... read more

Europe » France » Lorraine » Pont-a-Mousson September 22nd 2019

Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome? She is parked up on a tiny aire in Lorraine . In a tiny village with just a few spots for motorhomes on the banks of the river Moselle. Up stream from Pont a Mousson where there is a larger aire close to the pretty town. We were planning on driving to Pont a Mousson , walking into town and eating at a local eatery however ........... ........... The aire was complet. A nasty shock at this time of year when you expect France to be closing down for the season and for less motorhomers to be on the road . We woke early and left Theobalds Park as soon as the gates opened at 7. It should not have been a long drive to the tunnel and ... read more

Well Gabby got the all clear . She is serviced for another year and her habitation check has been completed . We recieved no phone calls to say there were any problems but then we recieved nothing to say she was ready so we headed back with some anticipation. There was no sign of our girl when we arrived and the service guy was busy with a couple who were taking over all his time. Asking what seemed like inane questions, filling in their little exercise book when all we wanted to do was go home. It will take some time to get Gabby back to shipshape and bristol fashion ready for the off . We pass some time looking at new Globecars. Not that we intend to buy a new one. We would never recoup ... read more

So where in the world is Gabby? Parked up at SMC having her service and her habitation check . Hopefully by now she will have had her oil drained and be full of new oil and a new oil filter . We hope nothing goes wrong and that she comes back without requiring any work . It is always a worry. We just want her back . We have dropped in on the Museum of the Horse and have now driven through the Wolds countryside. A flat land that ends in the North Sea. On the way in we pass the inevitable caravan parks that line the road. Golden Sands and Sea View. It looks like the old fashioned sort of Summer holiday. Mablethorpe bills itself as a holiday resort for kids and their parents and ... read more

The mornings are beginning to get darker. A mist has started to hang in the air and Autumn is pretty much just round the corner. The summer has been pretty poor this year. Unlike last year when it was hot all summer this one has been poor. The nights are drawing in and the house lights are being switched on earlier . The heating has even started to come on . . The gardens have their last flush of colour. Chrysanthemums and Dahlias are giving their all to provide colour. The Autumn yellow clematis are crawling over the trellis. The leaves are starting to fall from the trees. Just a trickle like an April shower. It won't be long before they fall like heavy rain and cover the ground like a snow fall. The conkers are ... read more

Today was a day of reflections. A funeral always brings out the old memories doesn't it? Memories of the person who has passed away and a realisation that relatives are getting fewer and farther between. After the funeral we made the short drive from the crematorium to the Museum of Timekeeping and on this journey my mind flitted back and forwards to school. Mr Hughes my old teacher was small with glasses. Everyone appeared small and wore glasses in the 1960's. He talked about "procrastination being the thief of time" He made me write this 100 times over. I cannot remember why he asked me to write this . I must have done something and I must have been wasting time. He commented on my silver brace which was trying its hardest to bridge the gap ... read more

"To what shall I liken the world? Moonlight reflected in dewdrops, shaken from a cranes bill." Dogen Zenji born around 1200 - died 1253. This was one of those apt sayings that pop up now and again on my calendar of Eastern philosophy. Rather apt somehow. Think back 50 years . Can you remember what you were doing when you heard that man had landed on the moon? It was one of those events that was etched in my memory. It was the same with the news that Kennedy had been assassinated, Elvis had died and the events of 911. I still can remember the room I was in when my friends gran came up to tell us the news that was coming out of Dallas, I was on the A41 in a car when the ... read more

Gabby the motorhome is parked up on Monmouth Caravan Park. From her windows we can see the much ruined castle and the church spire. The sun is shining down on us. The chairs are out and we are settled in on a hard standing plot . The welcome was warm and we were told that we could round the one way system and park up in the first spot. We got that wrong and went in the third but there was no remonstration that we were parked incorrectly . We were left on our own. It is quite a small site with a mixture of overnighters like us and semi permanent caravans. Some with gardens and chairs under make shift awnings. Most looked as if they were lived in for part of the summer. We had ... read more

We love castles. Some more than others. We have seen many over the years. Sometimes together. Sometimes separately. We have seen castles from the 20th century like Castle Drogo designed by Lutyens , the great Norman castles at Dover and the Tower of London. The castles of Wales from the early welsh ones to the ones built by Edward I to suppress the Welsh. Some we love . Others we hate. We love the castles of Ferrara and Mantova and those from the Aosta Valley . We today have already visited one near to Abergavenny and now we and Gabby are sitting on a massive car park around the very pretty castle at Raglan. The lovely weather has brought folks out and we are not alone. Throughout our morning more and more arrive. Some set up ... read more
