" Depend on your walking stick and not on other people " What an interesting and thought provoking Japanese proverb and one which hits the right spot. If you depend on others they can let you down badly. Depending on yourself and your own devices can be the better option. When I was young my dad brought home a book. I cannot remember the full title but it definately had the words "Phrase and Fable " embedded into the text . It was full of wise sayings . Some that were no longer used and were archaic and old fashioned . Others were still part and parcel of the rich English language . Some borrowed from others. Some totally unique . I loved that book. It smelt old . Turning its pages it smelt musty . ... read more

My mum used to say that all things came in threes. One good thing would surely be followed by another two. The first bad thing would quickly follow with two more. I am sure she was wrong as for us things seem to come in fours and fives. When something goes wrong it does it with a vengeance . Selling our house for example . We have three offers on the table . The first made before we left for Italy. The couple as lovely as they were had not even got their property on the market. They were convinced once they found our bungalow that they would sell theirs straightaway. Nope they did not . They had a flurry of activity and two people were interested but they had not sold their properties so nothing ... read more

Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome? She is parked up on a car park in Lytham St Annes near to Blackpool. £7 a night and an enlightened council who welcome motorhomes. There are a few cars here and one other motorhome. The dunes shelter us from the sea. WE are on a bus route to Blackpool. What more could we want? Why are we here ? Well tomorrow we are having a new Lithium battery for the motorhome fitted in Bamber Bridge so a trip to Blackpool seemed quite a sensible idea. Let's rewind and go back a bit to our holiday and last night in France. We slept well at Gravelines and set off early in the morning. It was dark and for the first time we saw migrants trying to get over ... read more

We left the camping site early and hit the road . Eventually we left the road works of Germany and found ourselves on some very rainy Belgian roads. You know you are there when you see the traffic building up around Brussels and hear the dee dum dee dum of the concrete under Gabbys wheels. We needed diesel and stopped at the first garage . We forgot that you cannot just buy fuel in Belgium . You have to go into the cash desk and get your card authorised. We failed miserably as the cashier was disinterested and just pointed and said machine. Not much help. We still had a few miles left so it was not a problem. A few more miles under our belts and tried the second garage. Same story - no diesel ... read more

"when we accept life as it is, we can respond appropriately to the way we are experiencing it, rather than just reacting out of fear and aversion " Ajahn Sumedho My son visited Bernkastel Keus many years ago with his friend and family. They took a friend with them every holiday for company for their boy and this particular year it was my sons turn . He sent a postcard to my mum and she kept it. We found it after she died . The picture was of the half timbered buildings of Bernkastel Kues. I wondered what he thought of this town on the Moselle . Would a 14 year old be impressed? Probably not . We were still in the wine growing region with the vines clinging to the hillsides. We were tootling along. ... read more

We woke up early and headed down river following the lovely Moselle. Joined by hundreds of others who were on the river cruise boat. They were spending a holiday on a boat with many others , being fed and watered and being dropped off at any pretty town along the river. Their days spent sitting in their rooms looking out of their picture windows. The Moselle twists its way from Trier to Koblenz. A beautiful waterway which meanders along with many dams and locks along its way. Above the river are the terraced vineyards which cling precariously to the hillsides. Steep sided valleys that look impossible to grow anything. The grape vines run up the hillside and the small red tractors harvest the grapes. The creep slowly down the hillsides . Vertically - it looks impossible ... read more

"Whatever comes , let it come, what stays let stay and what goes let go" Papaji This holiday seems to be one of taken whatever comes into our stride. It has never quite turned out to be what we planned but the unplanned seems to be coming together. This part of Germany has been interesting to say the least. Not what we expected and the weather is poor. Hat , coats and gloves weather. But at least there is something to see and write home about. Many years ago someone sent me a card from Ostende, one from the Swiss mountains and told me about Koblenz. He loved it and raved about it for years after. I never quite worked out why. It had never been on the radar. I knew it was the place where ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Freiburg October 14th 2019

Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome? She is in a city. You know us well by now . We don't really like busy cities and normally we would avoid them like the plague . That is unless something is worth seeing. We had started the morning in a rather cold and dismal Lake Constanz, done our shopping, emptied Gabbys toilet and filled her with water. We had restocked the cupboards thanks to Lidl and plenty of fresh bread. The journey to Freiburg was not the most pleasant. The roads were exceedingly busy, It felt as if all of Germany were on the road. As always we found many roadworks. Germany is still spending on their roads. Some are being completely dug up and many have lanes coned off. It took us rather a long ... read more

I think I quite like the humour of my new friend Eleanor Oliphant. She seems like a 30 year old Adrian Mole with attitude who says what she thinks and has a very imaginative mind. I feel as you get older you tend to be a little free with your thoughts and words. Sometimes age makes you think you can say or do anything. Maturity goes out of the window and you start to say what you think and hang the consequences. Years ago I might have said something nice about Vaduz , a nice garden, a nice shop assistant , an interesting church . Sadly I found nothing to endear me to it. It was one of those places I was glad to get away from. We planned a few days on Lake Constanz. The ... read more

Sometimes people travel to countries to add them to a list of countries seen. We usually don't visit just to add it to our list but seeing as we are in this part of the world with Liechtenstein on our route it would be rude not to visit and see what is occuring. Liechtenstein is bordered by Switzerland to the west and south and Austria to the east and north. It is Europes fourth smallest country and just has an land area of 160 square kilometres or 62 square miles to you and me. Its capital is Vaduz and it has a Prince and a castle . It reminded me a little of a tax haven - an Andorra or a Gibraltar where you could pick up your cigarettes and petrol cheaper than in your own ... read more
