Geo: 48.7931, -123.167Saturna Island (September 3rd 2015)As we motor towards Saturna Island, Janet and I decide to deal with our abundance of blackberries. We go into the galley, wash the berries and put them into a large pot with a little water and sugar to cook down into what we hope will be a yummy syrupy goo.Picking blackberries (and blueberries) is a childhood activity I remember very fondly. Though John is six years older than I am, I remember being with him when we lived WAY out in the country and us picking berries in the summer heat. Our mother made the best blackberry jam ever - and that is a task I have taken on myself. Every year my brothers get homemade blackberry jam from me. But, alas, here on the boat there are no ... read more

Geo: 48.7496, -123.219It poured down rain last night, so our swimsuits, towels and everything else we had hung outside on the boat to dry are sopping wet. I feel like I must be growing moss...During breakfast Jeff mentioned that he was actually getting used to sleeping in an MRI machine. LOL. After a breakfast of scrambled eggs and peppers, toast and juice, courtesy of John, the four of us (sans Al) decide to hike to the top of Mount Norman here on South Pender Island. According to Al, we just walk up the hill past the cafe we were in last night and turn left to the trail. The hike should take about an hour and a half. After we gather backpacks, water bottles, snacks and put on our life jackets the five of us climb into ... read more

Geo: 48.7232, -123.338We awoke after spending the night in Royal Cove on Portland Island, and after breakfast (cereals and fruit with ample quantities of coffee), decide to go ashore to hike. John has equipped himself with a plastic bowl and lid - his intentions are clearly not hiking!Back in the dinghy, over to the dock we all start out together. John peels off at a "Y" in the trail to go berry picking down the path we followed yesterday. Janet, Jeff, Al and I start on the long trail around the island. It is beautiful - think verdant forest, green, green moss on the trees, on the ground, ferns - sword and bracken intermixed. Green and moist everywhere. Add to that the quiet of the forest except the occasional sound of a kingfisher.Al points out a ... read more

Geo: 48.7238, -123.341Portland Island is also called Princess Margaret Marine Park because British Columbia gave her the island as a gift in 1958. She gave it back later and it became a marine park.Al tells us that last week when he was there people were swimming off the dock - I am suspicious because I am currently wearing a tank top, a short-sleeved tee shirt, a long sleeved tee shirt, and a fleece sweater under my windproof, waterproof jacket. Oh, and I have on a warm knit hat under my coat's hood. I already feel like I'm swimming...We set sail for Portland Island...and it starts to rain. Oh well. When we arrive, we drop the anchor and use a rope to tie the back of the boat to a "pin" onshore. If there isn't a pin, ... read more

Geo: 48.6373, -123.328Sidney Island / Portland Island (August 30th, 2015)Last night when we moored at Sidney, I noticed a little tiny peninsula bit of land which looked like it had some sticks poking out of it. This morning when I went "up top", holy mackerel! There was a long wide 'spit' of land there! The tide had gone out, and land appeared. After Jeff made a breakfast of vegan french toast, juice and fruit, (yum!), Al and John got the dinghy off the front of the boat, and brought it around to the back. The dinghy seats 3 (or a weight of XX pounds). The 5 of us are within the XX pounds and clamor aboard. Clamor is not quite the right word; we all have our assigned seats based on weight distribution. Jeff and I are ... read more

Geo: 48.6385, -123.332All Aboard the Ibis (August 29th 2015)Today we go! But first breakfast. There is something to be said for staying at a non-franchise hotel as the Victoria Regent has a delicious, free breakfast. We go to breakfast right away at 7am as John and Janet are coming to pick us up at 7:45 to head for the boat. Thanks to Janet, they are NOT going to pick up us at 6:30 like John wanted to do. It is a 20 minute drive to the harbor and we don't have to be there until 9am. Can you tell that John is excited? This is John's dream trip - he dreams of living on his boat and sailing and Jeff and I are so happy to be part of his journey. Soon they arrive and while John ... read more

Geo: 48.4644, -123.38Oh, Canada... (August 28, 2015) Here we are in Canada. Funny how a "short" trip like this takes the whole day and is so tiring. We dinked around the house "waiting" for our agreed upon depature time. A nice relaxing morning. When we arrived at the US Airport parking lot and turned off the car, Jeff looked at me and said, "Oh Crap!" Actually he didn't say "crap", but this is a family blog so we'll say "crap." "I forgot my hat!"Well, this is a disaster. Jeff bought this wonderful hat specifically for this trip - it was a Tilley and designed not to blow off, it was expensive, and it was still in our hall closet. Crap is right. Our flight to Seattle was uneventful, though it was a small plane, two seats per ... read more

Geo: 40.4161, -105.052Tomorrow we leave on our first ever sailing vacation...and we've been packing, unpacking, and packing again trying to stuff everything we need for a 10 day trip (6 days on a 35 foot sloop) into one carry-on sized duffel bag and a backpack. We've always been good at packing light but this is a bit of a challenge as our destination, Victoria, British Columbia, coupled with sailing winds means we need to take jackets, sweaters and other bulky stuff. But we did it! All that remains is getting our the electronics into the bag...and snacks, gotta have snacks.Pokey and Gumby are ready!... read more

Geo: 28.3467, -81.4801This is our last day in Orlando and we're awakened by rolling thunder and rain splashing on the patio outside. Noooo....this is going to be our last day at Universal. We have plans and getting drenched was not one of them! We talk about going out to breakfast to give the storm a chance to pass when we realize that it is already after eleven. Instead of going out we make coffee and set out the tortillas, hummus and cucumber; chop up a little lettuce and tomato and have an odd brunch. The rain has stopped by the time we get to the park and we're glad about that. Our first ride is "Despicable Me." The wait for this ride has never been less than 55 minutes any time we've looked and we agree ... read more
