Had to go back to the buffet breakfast again this morning so the kids could eat Vegas style. Same quantity consumed as the day before, only this time the ice cream cones were not available so breakfast was concluded with a bowl of snow freeze instead! Good grief! Being our last day in Vegas we spent it wandering the Strip and had a blast. Found a Coke shop that sold all types of Coke paraphernalia imaginable (kids had a field day) and an M&M shop where the kids also went nuts. First rain to hit Vegas in maybe 12 months then arrived, and boy did it pour. Vegas is not designed to cope with that kind of deluge and the strip quickly became flooded. Rain only lasted a couple of hours fortunately, and we were able ... read more

We started the day at the Hotel breakfast buffet where the kids eyes nearly fell out of their heads. I think they have adjusted well to American lifestyle and managed a helping of everything available including omlettes, bacon, hash browns, sausages, fresh fruit salad, waffles, pancakes, finishing with an ice cream in a cone! Spent the day shopping at Las Vegas Premium Outlet Mall. Brett and I hardly bought anything, as we spent the majority of our time assisting the kids with their bargain hunts. Mall was massive, and Brett even got to drive up the Strip to get us there! In the evening, Brett spent $10 on the pokies, whilst I was checking emails in the cafe downstairs, and returned 10 minutes later with $80. He had no idea how the machines really worked, so ... read more

The original plan was to get up and watch the sunrise from Zabriskie Point, but a 4am start which was what was required to achieve this goal was not desirable for any of us, so a more leisurely start was had by having breakfast in the Hotel and then heading back into Deathh Valley. First stop was Zabriskie Point where the view was breathtaking. Colours were cool and whilst a view at sunrise would have been amazing, we were still able to appreciate the beauty. We then stopped in at the Furness Creek information centre before heading out to Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 288 feet below sea level. Stinking hot, and no wind, but very cool! Thankfully there is no humidity otherwise the 44 dc would have been unbearable. We arrived ... read more

Day 9 - Jackie - 8 Sep It was a driving day today, as we departed Yosemite and headed out to Death Valley via Tioga Pass. An interesting drive out of the park which took in areas we hadn't been to previously. We passed Lake Tenaya, Toulumne Meadows and Lembert Dome, but as we had a long drive ahead, only stopped briefly for a few photos.Temperature again slowly rose as we travelled down the road, at one point rising 10 degree fahrenheit in about 4 minutes. We drove through a town called Beatty... we thought of Lara and Scott as we did so! Then on to a ghost town called Rhyolite, which was a first for all of us but the heat was starting make stops out of the car more challenging. It was about 43 ... read more

We ran out of time yesterday to complete hike out from Glacier Point, so we returned early in this morning to do so. As described in yesterday's blog, Glacier Point is our favourite vantage point of the valley, and one trip there would never have cut it anyway, so we were pleased to have a reason to return for a second viewing. A short hike took us around to the right of the viewing area, and enabled us to see further round the point and into a different area of the valley floor. It was a lovely walk through the trees with the deer and squirrels for company, and at our vantage point we could take in The Cathedral, Sentinel Dome, and El Capitan, three of the spectacular granite peaks / monoliths of Yosemite which we ... read more

We started the day with a short ride to Wawoma General Store and then caught the shuttle to the entrance of Mariposa Grove and the giant Sequia trees. We commenced out trek around this area starting with the fallen Monarch, the Bachelor and Three Graces, then the Grizzly Giant, then the Californian Tunnel Tree, the Museum, then the Clothespin Tree and last but not least the Faithful Couple. These are amazing trees and absolutely huge. We saw them up close and still struggle to comprehend their colosal size. If you can google them do so... they are truly amazing and even looking at our photos and video soon after we realised they can not capture how imposing these trees are!The hike was again several hours long but the kids were brilliant! Must be my genes... Brett ... read more

Today we decided to hike to Vernal Falls. Given that we are in Yosemite at the end of summer, most of the waterfalls and lakes, normally fed by melted snow, are completely dry and Vernal Falls is one of only two that still flow at this time of year as they are fed by the main river which flows through the valley. The Hiking guide chart rated the walk as "strenuous" with a walk time of 2 - 4 hours. However the chart also stated that the walk was only 1.4 miles each way, and an extra 0.3 miles if we wanted to extend our walk to take in the head of the falls, which by our standards didn"t make sense. We figured the time guide was for people in wheelchairs, so off we marched. Little did ... read more

Today the fun started for the Hjorth family as we had one last look around Union Square before collecting our rental car and attempting to drive for the first time in the United States. Didn't start well with Brett (the designated driver) getting in the passenger side of the vehicle and wondering where the steering wheel was. We then waited until every vehicle had left San Francisco before leaving the curb and heading down a one way street - thankfully the right way! Nervous times for Brett as he adjusted to the pressure of an intricate one way system, bizarre traffic signals on the main tram intersections, and a GPS system that wasn't able to cope with all the highrise buildings leaving me in charge of reading the map to get us onto the Oakland Bridge ... read more

Today is Emma's birthday, so a special day by any standards! Poor Emma had already had the majority of her birthday presents including an IPod from us, but it is not every day that you get to celebrate your birthday in a different continent, so a special day none the less! After breakfast, and a trip to the Apple Store to resolve our issues with receiving emails, we ventured by electric bus to Golden Gate Park to explore the Museum of Natural History. What an amazing building - complete with a butterfly filled rain forest, earthquake simulator for the 1906 and 1989 shakes for San Francisco... must admit the way the city has rebuilt after the quakes is truly astonishing!!! There was also an aquarium, planetarium and the albino alligator which was funny as anything to look ... read more

Today was our busiest day yet. We had an early rise and were down at Pier 33by 9am for our Alcatraz Tour. The city, in true San Francisco style was shrouded with fog, making the trip out to Alcatraz an unusual one. The captain had to sound his horn every few minutes, as it was impossible to see more than a few metres in front of the boat. Thankfully it had lifted slightly by the time we disembarked, but still no view back to the city. The tour of the cell block was amazing. It was self-guided with each of us having a headset with a recording of the history of The Rock so we could travel through at our own pace, pausing the recording when we felt like it. Only difficulty for us was trying ... read more
